Melanomas are highly aggressive tumours derived from melanocytes, which occur most commonly in the skin. Occasionally, these tumours may appear in oral and sinonasal mucous membranes. In this study, we performed a comparative analysis of the Phosphorylated Akt1 (p-Akt1) expression in 144 patients affected by cutaneous (CM), 34 oral cavity (OM), and 31 sinonasal melanomas (SNM).

Objective: This study has investigated whether high levels of Reticulocytes-C4d (R-C4d) and Platelets-C4d (P-C4d) reflecting recent activity in SLE patients are correlated with changes in natural anticoagulation components, coagulation activation and endothelial injury markers.
Methods: This study included three groups: 1) healthy women (control, n = 30); 2) women with low activity of the disease (SLEDAI 2 K ≤ 4, n = 30); 3) women with active disease (moderate or high activity) (SLEDAI 2 K > 4, n = 30). Median fluorescence intensity (MFI) of R-C4d and P-C4d were determined by flow cytometry using double labeling with specific monoclonal antibodies.

Primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), the most common cause of hypercalcemia, is most often identified in postmenopausal women with hypercalcemia and parathyroid hormone (PTH) levels that are either frankly elevated or inappropriately normal. The clinical presentation of PHPT includes three phenotypes: target organ involvement of the renal and skeletal systems; mild asymptomatic hypercalcemia; and more recently, high PTH levels in the context of persistently normal albumin-corrected and ionized serum calcium values. The factors that determine which of these three clinical presentations is more likely to predominate in a given country include the extent to which biochemical screening is employed, the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency, and whether a medical center or practitioner tends to routinely measure PTH levels in the evaluation of low bone density or frank osteoporosis.

Mitochondrial dysfunction is caused by an imbalance in the fission and fusion processes, and it has been implicated in the pathogenesis of several human cancers. However, the role of mitochondrial markers in melanomas still remains poorly understood. In this study, the authors assessed the expression of 3 mitochondrial markers (antimitochondrial, fission protein 1 [FIS1], and mitofusin 2 [MFN2]) in a series of head and neck mucosal and cutaneous melanomas.

In relation to behavioral changes in rodents infected with Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii), it is believed that the genotype of the infecting strain can have some influence. In this sense, the present work has sought to evaluate the effect of chronic infection by genetically distinct cystogenic strains of T.

We report a patient with frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA), in whom autologous hair transplantation was successfully performed despite evidence of active disease. Since the underlying pathology of FFA is usually lichen planopilaris, reservations, and caveats have been expressed with respect to the risk of köbnerization phenomena following hair transplantation surgery. An important question that arises is how the lichenoid tissue reaction pattern is generated around the hair follicles in FFA.

Background: Image-enhanced endoscopy enables real-time differential diagnosis of colorectal lesions through the observation of microvascular architecture.
Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of using blue laser imaging (BLI) for capillary pattern analysis in the differential diagnosis of neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions.
Patients And Methods: This prospective study included 920 consecutive superficial lesions diagnosed in 457 patients.

Background: An allogeneic human skin graft is a temporary biologic dressing used in extensive burns that can be a providential treatment for affected patients. Skin quality depends directly on its microbial decontamination after processing in a tissue bank. Our objective was to describe the skin donor profiles in relation to the analysis of the microbial colonization of the donated skin.

Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic yield of the cell block (CB) technique with immunohistochemistry in patients with mesenchymal neoplasms of the gastrointestinal tract collected by endoscopic ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration (EUS-FNA).
Methods: Tissue samples from consecutive patients with subepithelial lesions collected by EUS-FNA, without analysis by on-site cytopathology, were evaluated by the same pathologist only using CBs in AAF fixative. Sections were stained with haematoxylin-eosin and underwent complementary immunohistochemical staining for SMA, CD117, DOG-1 and S100 in the presence of mesenchymal neoplasms.

Background And Study Aims: Acute pancreatitis has no obvious cause after clinical, laboratory and radiologic investigation in 10%-30% of patients, and the diagnosis of idiopathic pancreatitis is given. This study investigated the role of linear EUS for identification of possible causes for acute pancreatitis when other investigative methods failed.
Patients And Methods: Between June 2012 and March 2017, 35 patients [25 women; mean age: 51.

Prostanoids derived from the activity of cyclooxygenases and their respective synthases contribute to both active inflammation and immune response in the tumor microenvironment. Their synthesis, deactivation and role in glioma biology have not yet been fully explored and require further study. Using quantitative real time PCR, gas chromatography/ electron impact mass spectrometry and liquid chromatography/ electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry, we have further characterized the prostanoid pathway in grade IV glioblastoma (GBM).

Background: Tissue diagnosis is required for gastric subepithelial lesions for differential diagnosis of GISTs. However, there has not been consensus about the best needle for EUS-guided sampling of these lesions.
Aim: To evaluate the diagnostic yield of EUS-FNA for gastric subepithelial lesions of the proper muscle layer with large-bore 19 gauge needles.

Objective: To compare complications of ultrasound-guided percutaneous renal biopsy using two needle gauges (16-G and 18-G).
Methods: A total of 238 individuals with renal biopsy indication were included and randomly separated into two groups: ultrasound-guided percutaneous renal biopsy procedure carried out with a 16-G or 18-G needle. The adequacy of biopsy samples and post-procedure complications were compared between the two groups.

Rationale: Oral metastases occur more commonly in bone, but can also manifest in soft tissues and eventually resemble a reactive lesion. Few cases of oral metastases mimicking reactive lesions in soft tissues have been reported to date.
Patient Concerns: We report a metastasis of gastric carcinoma (GC) to the oral mucosa without bone involvement in a 43 yom clinically and microscopically mimicking a reactive lesion.

The flow cytometric crossmatch (FCXM) assay, which detects the presence of donor specific HLA antibodies in patient sera, is a cornerstone of HLA compatibility testing. Since relatively long FCXM assay turnaround times may contribute to transplant delays and increased graft ischemia time, we developed and validated two modified crossmatch procedures, namely the Halifax and Halifaster FCXM protocols. These protocols reduce FCXM assay time >60% and simplify their set-up without compromising quality or sensitivity.

Context: High-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HRpQCT) is a noninvasive imaging technology that can provide insight into skeletal microstructure and strength. In asymptomatic primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT), HRpQCT imaging has demonstrated both decreased cortical and trabecular indices, consistent with evidence for increased fracture risk. There are limited data regarding changes in HRpQCT parameters postparathyroidectomy.

Background: The World Health Organization classifies glioblastoma (GBM) as a grade IV astrocytoma. Despite the advances in chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation treatments that improve a patient's length of survival, the overall trajectory of the disease remains unchanged. GBM cells produce significant levels of various types of bioactive lipids.

Background: Pancreatoduodenectomy is a technically challenging surgical procedure with an incidence of postoperative complications ranging from 30% to 61%. The procedure requires a high level of experience, and to minimize surgery-related complications and mortality, a high-quality standard surgery is imperative.
Aim: To understand the Brazilian practice patterns for pancreatoduodenectomy.
