Background: In December 2019, COVID-19 emerged in China and spread rapidly throughout the world, including India. So far, India has witnessed three spells of the disease, termed the first, second, and third waves; although the first two waves were significant in terms of severity, mortality, and need for respiratory support, the third wave had no significant impact and most people recovered without being admitted to the hospital. The present study aimed to discuss the clinical demographic characteristics and in-hospital outcomes of COVID-19 patients and their comparisons between the first and second waves.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a chronic neurological disorder that impacts the elderly population all over the globe. Evidence suggests association between AD and metabolic disorders such as diabetes mellitus (DM) and obesity (OB). The present study is an attempt to evaluate metabolic alterations in the serum and brain through NMR spectroscopy with the aim to identify shared metabolic signatures.

Semaphorins have been discovered to play an array of roles in immune regulation, especially in the complex field of inflammatory and autoimmune disorders. Originally discovered for their critical role in directing axon growth during brain development, semaphores have since been shown to have versatile actions. They are distinguished by a conserved extracellular sema domain with a 7-blade beta propeller structure.

Background: Delirium, an acute brain dysfunction, is proposed to be highly prevalent in clinical care and shown to significantly increase the risk of mortality and dementia.
Objectives: To report on the global prevalence of clinically documented delirium and delirium-related clinical practices in wards caring for paediatric and adult patients in healthcare facilities.
Design: A prospective, cross-sectional, 39-question survey completed on World Delirium Awareness Day, 15 March 2023.

Purpose: Existing biomarkers including C-reactive protein (CRP) do not adequately distinguish active and inactive TAK. We compared serum p-glycoprotein (p-gp)/Multidrug Resistance Protein 1 (MDR1), monomeric CRP (mCRP), CRP, and mCRP:CRP ratio in Takayasu arteritis (TAK) and healthy controls and their relationship with disease activity.
Patients And Methods: Serum p-gp mCRP (ELISA) and CRP (nephelometry) were compared between consecutive adults with TAK (>18 years) enrolled from a prospective cohort (n = 92) and healthy controls (n = 29), and between active vs inactive TAK (n = 46 each).

Advancement in genetic testing has become increasingly important in diagnosing and managing developmental and epileptic encephalopathies (DEEs), a group of rare neurodevelopmental disorders characterized by early-onset seizures, developmental delay, and electroencephalographic (EEG) abnormalities. These early epileptic encephalopathies are often described as various syndromes as per their clearly defined, relatively uniform, and distinct clinical phenotypes with consistent EEG and/or neuroimaging findings. Finding the underlying molecular mechanisms can cause a definitive change in the management strategy.

Symmetric inflammatory polyarthritis is the most prominent manifestation of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, RA can practically affect any organ system, whether hematologic, neurological, cardiac, lung, skin, eyes, or kidneys. Systemic involvement in RA can be severe when there is interstitial lung disease, scleritis, amyloidosis, pure red cell aplasia, or myelodysplasia.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is an ever-evolving set of diseases that poses a serious health risk in many countries worldwide. Existing evidence illustrates that individuals with MetS have a 30%-40% higher chance of acquiring type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), cardiovascular disease (CVD), or both. This study was undertaken to uncover the regulatory role of natural organosulfur compounds (OSCs), S-allyl-L-cysteine (SAC), and S-ethyl-L-cysteine (SEC), in targeting high carbohydrate high fat (HCHF)-diet-induced MetS-associated risk management.

Background An enhanced recovery approach in surgery helps early postoperative discharge. With the decreasing trend of morbidity and mortality in recent times in patients undergoing complex procedures such as pancreaticoduodenectomy, readmissions are the next major concern. The causes and outcomes of these readmissions should be investigated for their impact on patient care and prevention.

Skeletal muscle wasting is a clinically proven pathology associated with Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) infection; however, underlying factors that govern skeletal muscle damage are yet to be explored. The current study aims to investigate the pathobiology of skeletal muscle damage using a mouse model of JEV infection. Our study reveals a significant increment in viral copy number in skeletal muscle post-JEV infection, which is associated with enhanced skeletal muscle cell death.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumours (IMTs) represent a rare group of neoplastic lesions characterized by a diverse clinical presentation. Endobronchial involvement is infrequently reported, and its manifestation mimicking the symptoms of a ruptured hydatid cyst adds an additional layer of complexity to the diagnostic challenge. This case report delves into an exceptional clinical scenario where an endobronchial IMT masqueraded as a ruptured hydatid cyst, initially confounding the diagnostic team.

The hippocampal dentate gyrus, responds to diverse pathological stimuli through neurogenesis. This phenomenon, observed following brain injury or neurodegeneration, is postulated to contribute to neuronal repair and functional recovery, thereby presenting an avenue for endogenous neuronal restoration. This study investigated the extent of regenerative response in hippocampal neurogenesis by leveraging the well-established kainic acid-induced status epilepticus model in vivo.

Background: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is a unique, highly penetrant neuro-cutaneous disorder with a wide range of manifestations. Though the clinical diagnosis of NF1 is straight forward, there can be other disorders which mimic NF1, especially its cutaneous features. Here we describe the clinical and mutation spectrum of a series of individuals whose primary diagnosis was NF1 or NF1 related disorders.

A subset of Takayasu arteritis (TAK) has onset in the pediatric age group (≤18 years). The differences in mortality between pediatric-onset and adult-onset TAK are unclear. Therefore, we undertook a systematic review with meta-analysis to compare mortality risk in pediatric-onset with adult-onset TAK.
