Barriers to care linkage and educational impact on unnecessary MASLD referrals.

Front Med (Lausanne)

July 2024

Department of Internal Medicine, College of Medicine, Hanyang University, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • - An online educational program was implemented for 869 physicians, including primary care physicians (PCPs), to improve their management of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD).
  • - Initial surveys showed that many PCPs were not routinely assessing liver fibrosis and relied on elevated liver enzyme levels for evaluations, with barriers such as lack of patient education fees and short consultation times.
  • - After the 7-week program, there was an increase in noninvasive liver fibrosis assessments and cardiovascular evaluations, while unnecessary referrals to specialists decreased, highlighting the importance of education in managing MASLD effectively.

J Am Acad Orthop Surg Glob Res Rev

August 2024

From the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Inje University Sanggye Paik Hospital, Seoul, Korea (Dr. Kim and Dr. Chang), and the Department of Orthopedic Surgery, Hospital Universitario La Paz, Madrid, Spain (Dr. Pizones).

Adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) in siblings reflects genetic hypothesis; however, few studies have been published. Furthermore, to the best of our knowledge, there have been no reports in the literature of both siblings with AIS who underwent deformity corrections. A 15-year-old adolescent girl visited our clinic with back pain after recognition of the incidental findings of a scoliotic curve in the spine.

Clin Hypertens

August 2024

Department of Internal Medicine, Institute of Kidney Disease Research, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigated the impact of strict blood pressure (BP) control on health outcomes in patients with diabetic kidney disease (DKD), focusing on whether targeting systolic BP (SBP) below 130 mmHg has benefits compared to below 140 mmHg.
  • A total of 341 DKD patients were split into standard and strict BP control groups, with cardiovascular and renal events being monitored over a follow-up period of 2.8 years.
  • Results showed that while strict BP control didn't significantly lower the risk of health events, maintaining achieved SBP levels between 130-139 mmHg was linked to a reduced risk of cardiovascular and renal complications.

Dried blood spot-based free sterol signatures in sitosterolemia diagnostics.

Clin Chim Acta

August 2024

Center for Advanced Biomolecular Recognition, Korea Institute of Science and Technology, Seoul 02792, Republic of Korea. Electronic address:

Background: Sitosterolemia is a rare inherited lipid metabolic disorder characterized by increased levels of plant sterols and accelerated atherosclerosis. Although early detection is beneficial for the prevention of disease progression, it is largely underdiagnosed by routine screening based on conventional lipid profiles.

Materials And Methods: A gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS)-based profiling has been developed and validated to measure the levels of biologically active free sterols, including five endogenous sterols and three plant sterols (sitosterol, campesterol, and stigmasterol) in dried blood spot (DBS).

Moderation of thyroid hormones for the relationship between amyloid and tau pathology.

Alzheimers Res Ther

July 2024

Department of Neuropsychiatry, Seoul National University Hospital, 101 Daehak-Ro, Jongno-Gu, Seoul, 03080, Republic of Korea.

Background: Altered thyroid hormone levels have been associated with increased risk of Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia and related cognitive decline. However, the neuropathological substrates underlying the link between thyroid hormones and AD dementia are not yet fully understood. We first investigated the association between serum thyroid hormone levels and in vivo AD pathologies including both beta-amyloid (Aβ) and tau deposition measured by positron emission tomography (PET).

Background And Purpose: The co-occurrence of amyloid-β pathology in Parkinson's disease (PD) is common; however, the role of amyloid-β deposition in motor prognosis remains elusive. This study aimed to investigate the association between striatal amyloid deposition, motor complications and motor prognosis in patients with PD.

Methods: Ninety-six patients with PD who underwent F florbetaben (FBB) positron emission tomography were retrospectively assessed.

This study developed a molecular classification model for cervical cancer using machine learning, integrating prognosis related biomarkers with clinical features. Analyzing 281 specimens, 27 biomarkers were identified, associated with recurrence and treatment response. The model identified four molecular subgroups: group 1 (OALO) with Overexpression of ATP5H and LOw risk; group 2 (LASIM) with low expression of ATP5H and SCP, indicating InterMediate risk; group 3 (LASNIM) characterized by Low expression of ATP5H, SCP, and NANOG, also at InterMediate risk; and group 4 (LASONH), with Low expression of ATP5H, and SCP, Over expression of NANOG, indicating High risk, and potentially aggressive disease.
