Methods: Anonymized clinical data were submitted to a secure web-based tool within the National Health Service network. Hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), sensor-derived glucometrics, total daily dose of insulin (TDD), and patient-reported outcome changes between baseline and follow-up were assessed.

Aims: To evaluate Patient Reported Outcome Measures (PROMs) and surgical outcomes in patients undergoing Chest Wall Perforator Flaps (CWPFs).

Methods: This was an observational single cohort study using an audit approach and a survey instrument. 84 patients who had undergone CWPFs in the last 5 years at the Department of Breast Surgery, City Hospital Birmingham, were identified from a pre-existing database.

The Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials extension for Artificial Intelligence interventions (CONSORT-AI) was published in September 2020. Since its publication, several randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of AI interventions have been published but their completeness and transparency of reporting is unknown. This systematic review assesses the completeness of reporting of AI RCTs following publication of CONSORT-AI and provides a comprehensive summary of RCTs published in recent years.

N-desethyl isotonitazene detected in polydrug users admitted to hospital in Birmingham, United Kingdom.

Introduction: Nitazenes are potent synthetic opioids and N-desethyl isotonitazene, a metabolite of isotonitazene, has emerged as a drug in its own right.

Methods: This is an observational case series of patients with suspected or declared substance use who were admitted to hospitals in the Sandwell and West Birmingham National Health Service Trust between July and October 2023. All patients were found on toxicological screening to have been exposed to N-desethyl isotonitazene.

A real-world evaluation of the diagnostic accuracy of radiologists using positive predictive values verified from deep learning and natural language processing chest algorithms deployed retrospectively.

Objectives: This diagnostic study assessed the accuracy of radiologists retrospectively, using the deep learning and natural language processing chest algorithms implemented in Clinical Review version 3.2 for: pneumothorax, rib fractures in digital chest X-ray radiographs (CXR); aortic aneurysm, pulmonary nodules, emphysema, and pulmonary embolism in CT images.

Methods: The study design was double-blind (artificial intelligence [AI] algorithms and humans), retrospective, non-interventional, and at a single NHS Trust.

Real-World Experience in the Use of Immunosuppression for the Management of Inflammatory Eye Disease.

Purpose: Patients with sight-threatening inflammatory eye disease (IED) are maintained on systemic immunosuppression whilst in long-term clinical remission. There are no clear guidelines on the duration of remission before implementing treatment withdrawal. We present a real-world analysis on the use of immunosuppression in IED in long-term remission and consider strategies for withdrawal.

A national multicentre study of outcomes and patient satisfaction with the virtual fracture clinic and the influence of the COVID-19 pandemic: The MAVCOV study.

Background: Virtual fracture clinics (VFCs) are advocated by the British Orthopaedic Association Standards for Trauma (BOAST). We aimed to assess the impact of the transition from face-to-face fracture clinic review and identify any change in clinical outcome and patient satisfaction.

Methods: A national, cross-sectional cohort study of VFCs across the UK over two separate two-week periods pre- and during the first UK COVID-19 lockdown was undertaken.

Background: Diffuse sclerosing osteomyelitis (DSO) affecting the mandible is an uncommon condition characterised by recurrent pain and functional disturbances. Traditional treatments involving antibiotics, steroids, and analgesics have generally yielded unsatisfactory results. Numerous articles have proposed the utilisation of bisphosphonate therapy as an alternative approach to achieve sustained symptom relief.

Background: Studies utilising genotyping methods report the prevalence of familial hypercholesterolaemia to be as high as one in 137 of the adult population.

Aim: To estimate the prevalence of familial hypercholesterolaemia measured by clinically coded diagnosis, associated treatments, and lipid measurements observed in UK primary care.

Introduction: The Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations include a commitment to "leave no one behind" as a universal goal. To achieve this in geriatric oncology (GO) worldwide, it is important to understand the current state of GO at an international level. The International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG) has several National Representatives (NRs) who act as SIOG's delegates in their respective countries.

Outbreak of lead poisoning from a civilian indoor firing range in the UK.

Introduction: Lead exposure from discharged lead dust is a recognised risk at firing ranges. We report a lead poisoning outbreak among staff and their close contacts at a UK civilian indoor 24 m firing range.

Methods: A retrospective review was undertaken of data collected on all patients at risk of lead poisoning identified either by direct referral to the Clinical Toxicology clinicians at the West Midlands Poisons Unit, or via the Trace Elements Supra-Regional Assay Service Laboratory at Sandwell hospital.

A systematic review of 'equity-focused' game-based learning in the teaching of health staff.

Background: An unequal distribution of the social determinants of health drives health inequalities. Existing training fails to communicate the impossible circumstances that disadvantaged groups face. Game-based learning is increasingly used as an innovative method with the potential to enhance health staff's ability to address health inequalities, but its effectiveness is unknown.

A man in his mid-40s who had been recently started on alirocumab (a human monoclonal antibody which inhibits proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9) due to his strong familial cardiovascular risk and refractory hypercholesterolaemia presented with a few-hour history of acute-onset left-sided blurred vision. The best-corrected visual acuities were 6/6 bilaterally and slit-lamp examination was normal. However, optical coherence tomography revealed serous subretinal fluid in the left macula.

Idiopathic inflammatory myopathies are a group of autoimmune diseases with a broad spectrum of clinical presentations, primarily characterised by immune-mediated muscle injury. Until recently, there was little insight into the pathogenesis of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies, which challenged the recognition of the breadth of heterogeneity of this group of diseases as well as the development of new therapeutics. Safe inhalation pipe provision (SIPP): protocol for a mixed-method evaluation of an intervention to improve health outcomes and service engagement among people who use crack cocaine in England.

Background: Over 180,000 people use crack cocaine in England, yet provision of smoking equipment to support safer crack use is prohibited under UK law. Pipes used for crack cocaine smoking are often homemade and/or in short supply, leading to pipe sharing and injuries from use of unsafe materials. This increases risk of viral infection and respiratory harm among a marginalised underserved population.

Methods: BE patients were prospectively recruited from December 2013 to July 2016. Expression of p53, Ki-67, cyclin-D1, COX-2 and p21 was assessed in quadrantic biopsies from the proximal and distal margins of the BE segments.

The Fibromyalgia Decomposition Phenomenon: A Reflexive Thematic Analysis.

Research is needed that can provide an illustration of the different biopsychosocial and environmental experiences of people with fibromyalgia to consider how healthcare professionals can best engage with the challenges that are faced. Qualitative research is well-positioned to do this. The current study used interpretive hermeneutic phenomenology situated within a pragmatic worldview, the aim being to obtain a deeper exploration of the fibromyalgia experience prior to commencing a novel intervention.
