Given the limited data on the predictive factors of residual kidney stone size after flexible ureteroscopy (fURS), this study aims to investigate the variables affecting residual stone size. The medical records of 642 patients without complications being treated for kidney stones with fURS between July 2014 and May 2022 were reviewed retrospectively, and the information of the 170 patients in whom residual stones were found was recorded. In addition to patient-specific factors and stone characteristics, length of postoperative hospital stay, postoperative fever, and preoperative antiaggregant use were evaluated.

J Clin Apher

October 2023

Department of Pediatrics, Division of Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Sancaktepe Sehit Prof. Dr. Ilhan Varank Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Science, Istanbul, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • Atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) is a rare but serious illness that affects the blood and organs, making it very dangerous.
  • A 4-year-old girl with aHUS had problems with her heart because of a gene mutation, and treatments usually used, like plasma exchange, didn’t help her.

Objective: Our aims were to determine whether the levels of plasma monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1), fetuin-A, serum total antioxidant status (TAS), and serum total oxidant status (TOS) are cardiac biomarkers and to clarify their relationship with each other in acute myocardial infarction (AMI).

Patients And Methods: The study included 90 participants: 60 patients with AMI [30 with and 30 without ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI)] and 30 cardiac patients without AMI. The diagnostic values of serum Hs-cTnT, MCP-1, fetuin-A, TAS, and TOS levels in predicting AMI were evaluated statistically.

Favorable efficacy of adalimumab treatment in experimental acute pancreatitis model.

Turk J Med Sci

December 2022

Department of Internal Medicine, Sultan 2.Abdülhamid Han Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Sciences, İstanbul, Turkey.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute pancreatitis can range from mild symptoms to severe complications like multiorgan failure, and this study investigated the impact of Adalimumab (ADA) treatment on inflammation and cell death in a rat model of the disease.
  • The experiment involved administering cerulein injections to induce acute pancreatitis, followed by two different doses of ADA, with subsequent measurements of inflammation markers and histopathological analysis.
  • Results showed that both doses of ADA reduced inflammation markers and apoptosis, with high-dose ADA (20 mg/kg) providing significant improvements in symptoms and a reduction in cell death, suggesting its potential use as a treatment for acute pancreatitis in humans.

Background: In low-income or underdeveloped countries with conflict and internal unrest, healthcare facilities and staff are limited. For these reasons, it is necessary to use the most straightforward scoring systems to ensure that health facilities and staff are used effectively and to expedite processes through early and effective interventions for patients. In this study, we evaluate and compare the scoring systems used to predict patient prognosis for Emergency Department (ED) patients in northern Syria, which is an area marred by conflict and internal unrest.
