C3-Dominant Infection Related Crescentic Glomerulonephritis.

Infection related glomerulonephritis and more specifically streptococcal glomerulonephritis is a rare disease in adults, and so is C3 glomerulonephritis. It has been recognized that a clinical and morphological overlap between these two entities exists. We present a case of a 59-year-old man with previous treated HIV infection with virological response, treated hepatitis b infection, treated syphilis and non-Hodgkin lymphoma in remission; presenting and acute sore throat with high ASO titers two weeks before a rapidly progressive glomerulonephritis requiring dialysis since presentation; biopsy showed acute diffuse and proliferative glomerulonephritis with crescentic pattern with exclusive C3 staining.

Giant Soft Tissue Hemangioma of the Neck with Laryngeal Extension.

Introduction: Soft tissue hemangiomas are among the most prevalent soft tissue tumors and can pose diagnostic challenges due to their propensity to extend into various regions. In our case, imaging studies facilitated effective characterization of the mass, and timely intervention with sclerotherapy enabled adequate initial control of the lesion. Subsequently, medical management with propranolol and a second scheduled surgical intervention with sclerotherapy contributed to a reduction in the lesion size, alleviation of symptoms, and improvement in prognosis.

Early biomarkers of diabetic kidney disease. A focus on albuminuria and a new combination of antidiabetic agents.

Aims: We aimed to determine the efficacy and safety of sodium-glucose cotransporter type 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) and glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists to prevent worsening urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio as an early biomarker of diabetes kidney disease.

Methods: A total of 178 patients with type 2 diabetes and obesity received combination treatment with SGLT2i added to GLP1ra (n = 76), GLP1ra added to SGLT2i (n = 50) or GLP1ra plus SGLT2i from start (n = 52), according to investigators´ best clinical judgement. Major outcomes assessed at 26 weeks were changes in urine albumintocreatinine-ratio (UACR), estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR), glycated haemoglobin, body weight and systolic blood pressure.

Caudal Septal Extension Graft Sutured with Absorbable Material and Not Fixed to the Nasal Spine Region Compared with the Conventional Fixation Method: A Retrospective Study.

Background: The caudal septal extension graft (CSEG) is a predictable method for positioning the tip and columella during rhinoplasty, and it is commonly performed using permanent sutures and in some cases fixating the graft to the nasal spine region (NSR) (conventional method). Whether this predictability is preserved when using absorbable sutures has yet to be determined.

Methods: We performed a retrospective assessment of 1146 patients who underwent rhinoplasty performed by the same surgeon using the CSEG method from 2008 through 2017 in an academic setting.

Musical practice as an enhancer of cognitive function in healthy aging - A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Aging is accompanied by cognitive decline, although recent research indicates that the rate of decline depends on multiple lifestyle factors. One of such factors is musical practice, an activity that involves several sensory and motor systems and a wide range of high-level cognitive processes. This paper describes the first systematic review and meta-analysis, to our knowledge, of the impact of musical practice on healthy neurocognitive aging.

Comparing adaptation in emotional and non-emotional conflict in patients with schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder.

Research on conflict adaptation suggests that complex networks are involved in the detection and resolution of conflicts. These networks are believed to be different depending on whether the conflict occurs in emotional or non-emotional contexts. In addition, the adaptation to both types of conflict also seems to have different neural bases.

Our present study aims to determine whether there are differences in the secretion of salivary cortisol between palliative care unit health professionals with and without burnout, and to elucidate whether there is a relationship between burnout syndrome and perceived stress and psychopathological status in this population.

Method: A total of 69 health professionals who met the inclusion criteria participated in our study, including physicians, nurses, and nursing assistants.

Effectiveness of a neuropsychological treatment for confabulations after brain injury: A clinical trial with theoretical implications.

Confabulators consistently generate false memories without intention to deceive and with great feelings of rightness. However, to our knowledge, there is currently no known effective treatment for them. In order to fill this gap, our aim was to design a neuropsychological treatment based on current theoretical models and test it experimentally in 20 confabulators sequentially allocated to two groups: an experimental and a control group.

Are executive functions related to emotional intelligence? A correlational study in schizophrenia and borderline personality disorder.

This research explored the relationship between executive functions (working memory and reasoning subtests of the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale, Trail Making and Stroop tests, fluency and planning tasks, and Wisconsin Card Sorting Test) and emotional intelligence measured by the Mayer-Salovey-Caruso Emotional Intelligence Test in patients with schizophrenia or borderline personality disorder compared to a control group. As expected, both clinical groups performed worse than the control group in executive functions and emotional intelligence, although the impairment was greater in the borderline personality disorder group. Executive functions significantly correlated with social functioning.

Brain networks of temporal preparation: A multiple regression analysis of neuropsychological data.

There are only a few studies on the brain networks involved in the ability to prepare in time, and most of them followed a correlational rather than a neuropsychological approach. The present neuropsychological study performed multiple regression analysis to address the relationship between both grey and white matter (measured by magnetic resonance imaging in patients with brain lesion) and different effects in temporal preparation (Temporal orienting, Foreperiod and Sequential effects). Two versions of a temporal preparation task were administered to a group of 23 patients with acquired brain injury.
