Clinical findings, surgical treatment and outcome in dogs with parotid duct ectasia: 14 cases (2010-2023).

Objectives: To describe the clinical presentation, diagnostic findings, surgical treatment and outcome of dogs diagnosed with parotid duct ectasia.

Materials And Methods: Medical records of dogs diagnosed with parotid duct ectasia between 2010 and 2023 at six small animal referral hospitals were retrospectively reviewed. Outcome was assessed by contacting the owners or referring veterinarians.

Ameloblastic fibro-odontosarcoma with mandibular bone invasion and regional lymph node metastasis in a cat: case report.

Odontogenic tumours are uncommon neoplasms in domestic animals, mostly solitary and locally infiltrative, but rarely metastatic. We report the case of a 13-year-old neutered male cat presented with a mandibular gingival neoformation. A computed tomography scan revealed an irregular neoformation with marked post-contrast enhancement, associated with lysis of the incisive bone and mandibular symphysis.

Immune-Mediated Hemolytic Anemia and Clinically Suspected Acute Pancreatitis in Dogs, a Pilot Study.

Acute pancreatitis can be a complication of massive hemolysis, above all when intravascular in nature. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the association between canine immune mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA) and clinically suspected acute pancreatitis (CSAP) and the role of calculated free plasma hemoglobin (Hbfp) in CSAP occurrence/development. In this cohort study the records of 95 dogs with IMHA and 95 sick dogs with pathologies other than IMHA were compared for CSAP occurrence/development.

The Single Intra-Articular Injection of Platelet-Rich Plasma vs. Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs as Treatment Options for Canine Cruciate Ligament Rupture and Patellar Luxation.

Cranial cruciate ligament rupture (CCLR) and patellar luxation (PL) are common pathologies affecting canines. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are commonly used as a non-surgical treatment plan in these cases. Clinical usage of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is an emerging area of interest in veterinary medicine.

Relationship between magnetic resonance imaging findings and histological grade in spinal peripheral nerve sheath tumors in dogs.

Background: Peripheral nerve sheath tumors (PNSTs) are a group of neoplasms originating from Schwann cells or pluripotent cell of the neural crest. Therapeutic options and prognosis are influenced by their degree of malignancy and location.

Hypothesis/objectives: Identify magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features predictive of PNST histologic grade.

Predictive Value of Acute Phase Proteins for the Short-Term Outcome of Meningoencephalitis of Unknown Origin in Dogs.

Meningoencephalitis of unknown origin (MUO) is one of the most common inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system (CNS). The study evaluates the possible increase and the potential role of acute phase proteins (APPs) and other inflammatory serum parameters as biomarkers predicting the short-term outcome of dogs with meningoencephalitis of unknown origin (MUO). A retrospective cohort study was designed.

Divergences between serum C-reactive protein and ferritin concentrations in canine pyometra.

The main aim of this report was to investigate and compare the response of serum C-reactive protein (CRP) and ferritin, two positive acute phase proteins (APPs) which usually show an increase in inflammatory processes, in dogs with pyometra. For this purpose, two different studies were made. In the first one , both proteins were measured together in an APPs profile in 25 dogs with pyometra, 25 dogs with pancreatitis (as an example of a positive inflammatory control group), and in 25 healthy dogs.

Effects of pupil dilation with topical 0.5% tropicamide on retinal vascular parameters assessed by VAMPIRE® software in healthy cats.

Our study investigates the effects of mydriasis obtained with topical 0.5% tropicamide on retinal vascular parameters evaluated in cats using the retinal imaging software: Vascular Assessment and Measurement Platform for Images of the Retina (VAMPIRE®). Forty client-owned healthy adult cats were included in the study.

Delayed non-selective contrast-enhanced CT can reveal spontaneous contrast enhancement of the lymphatic system in cats.

The authors incidentally observed that, on delayed postcontrast CT studies, feline patients could show increased attenuation of the lymphatic system. The aim of the present study was to evaluate if the lymphatic system of feline patients undergoing intravenous administration of contrast medium might consistently enhance on delayed postcontrast CT studies. Feline patients that underwent CT examination for variable diagnostic purposes were included in this multicentric observational descriptive study.

Multidetector-row CT features and histopathological analysis of pericardial recesses in dogs.

At the level of pericardial reflections and near the great thoracic vessels, pericardial recesses (PRs) are present, where fluid can collect to increase the pericardial reserve volume. To date, these structures have not been described in vivo in veterinary patients. The aims of this observational and descriptive study were to describe the location and appearance of PRs in dogs, as seen with multidetector-row CT (MDCT), and to develop a dedicated imaging technique for their best visualization.

Reversible control of reproduction in tom cats: medical options for manipulating libido and fertility.

Background: There has been a growing interest in alternatives to surgery for controlling reproduction in tom cats, and the resultant medical options add to a practitioner's toolbox when handling these cases in clinical practice. It is important, however, that when suggesting these drugs, veterinarians have a good understanding of their mode of action, and their correct use and dosage.

Clinical Relevance: Breeders increasingly wish to be able to switch on/off the reproductive ability of their tom cats in a controlled manner.

Is pneumothorax secondary to pneumoperitoneum a real risk in dogs undergoing total laparoscopic gastropexy?

Background: There were described in veterinary literature, the possibility of pneumothorax as a complication of laparoscopic surgery in dogs undergoing laparoscopic ovariectomy associated with total laparoscopic gastropexy.

Aim: To assess if spontaneous pneumothorax secondary to pneumoperitoneum is a real risk in dogs undergoing total laparoscopic gastropexy.

Methods: Dogs undergoing totally laparoscopic gastropexy received chest X-rays (CXR) in lateral (left and right) and ventro-dorsal projection before and after the surgery.

Objective: To describe the technique, complications, and outcome of the laparoscopic extra-abdominal transfascial suturing method for diaphragmatic rupture repair in a cat.

Diagnostic predictivity of transtubular potassium gradient for primary hypoadrenocorticism in hyperkalemic dogs: a cross-sectional study.

Objectives: Transtubular potassium gradient has never been evaluated in the diagnosis of primary hypoadrenocorticism in dogs. The objective of this study is to evaluate the diagnostic utility of transtubular potassium gradient for the diagnosis of primary hypoadrenocorticism in dogs with serum K  > 5.5 mol/L.

CT features of primary bone neoplasia of the thoracic wall in dogs.

Primary thoracic wall neoplasia is uncommon in dogs and the prognosis depends on tumor type. The aims of this retrospective, multi-center, observational study were to describe CT features of primary thoracic wall neoplasia in dogs and to test the hypothesis that CT features would differ among tumor types. Dogs with a diagnosis of primary thoracic wall bone neoplasia and thoracic CT study were included.

Witnessing a companion animal's death can be a stressful psychological experience for human guardians, affecting their ability to grieve. The veterinary and psychological sciences offer useful tools for supporting human guardians during their companion animal's terminal illness. Accordingly, the present study aimed to validate the HHHHMM Quality of Life Scale in the Italian context.

Analysis of Metaldehyde in Animal Whole Blood and Serum by Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry.

Metaldehyde, a widely used molluscicide, is the third cause of intoxication by pesticides in domestic animals in Europe. Most mammalian species are susceptible, and its exposure may lead to death within a few hours. While metaldehyde intoxication diagnosis is in most cases presumptive, based on the symptomatology or from "postmortem" analysis, few analytical methods are currently available for live animals.

Successful early diagnosis and surgical treatment of congenital caval foramen hernia in an 8-month-old mixed breed cat.

An 8-month-old neutered female domestic mixed breed cat was presented to Dr. L. Kriaučeliūnas Small Animal Clinic due to coughing that persisted for 2 weeks.

Congenital porto-pulmonary shunt in a dog.

Background: Congenital extra-hepatic porto-systemic shunts (CEPS) are a non-rare vascular anomaly observed in dogs, most commonly in small and toy pure breeds. Computed tomographic angiography (CTA) examination is considered the gold standard imaging modality for the diagnosis of anomalous vascular connections.

Case Description: An anomalous congenital porto-pulmonary shunt was incidentally diagnosed in a 5-year-old French Bulldog.

Chronic Use of Deslorelin in Dogs: Six Cases (2005-2022).

Deslorelin is currently registered for the induction of temporary infertility in male dogs, male cats, male ferrets, and also prepubertal female dogs, but research has shown its usefulness for other conditions requiring chronic treatment. This paper presents six cases of dogs chronically treated with deslorelin for indications such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, control of fertility, abnormal reproductive behavior and urinary incontinence. All animals were in good health during treatment.

Importance of Water Transport in Mammalian Female Reproductive Tract.

Aquaporins (AQPs) are involved in water homeostasis in tissues and are ubiquitous in the reproductive tract. AQPs are classified into classical aquaporins (AQP0, 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8), aquaglycerolporins (AQP3, 7, 9, and 10) and superaquaporins (AQP11 and 12). Nine AQPs were described in the mammalian female reproductive tract.

Malformation of the Cortical Development Associated with Severe Clusters of Epileptic Seizures.

Three cases of the malformation of the cortical development are described: a mixed breed dog and a Border Collie pup with a focal and diffuse cortical dysplasia, respectively, and a kitten with lissencephaly. All cases presented with intractable epilepsy and were euthanized, due to the cluster of epileptic seizures. The gross examination at necropsy revealed the morphologic alteration of the telencephalic region in two cases.

Serum anti-GM2 and anti-GalNAc-GD1a ganglioside IgG antibodies are biomarkers for immune-mediated polyneuropathies in cats.

Recent work identified anti-GM2 and anti-GalNAc-GD1a IgG ganglioside antibodies as biomarkers in dogs clinically diagnosed with acute canine polyradiculoneuritis, in turn considered a canine equivalent of Guillain-Barré syndrome. This study aims to investigate the serum prevalence of similar antibodies in cats clinically diagnosed with immune-mediated polyneuropathies. The sera from 41 cats clinically diagnosed with immune-mediated polyneuropathies (IPN), 9 cats with other neurological or neuromuscular disorders (ONM) and 46 neurologically normal cats (CTRL) were examined for the presence of IgG antibodies against glycolipids GM1, GM2, GD1a, GD1b, GalNAc-GD1a, GA1, SGPG, LM1, galactocerebroside and sulphatide.

Oral fibroepithelial polyps ("chewing granulomas") in 21 dogs: Histomorphology, immunohistochemical characterization, and clinical outcome.

Oral fibroepithelial polyps (FEPs) are common, benign, nonneoplastic lesions in humans that often develop slowly in sites of local irritation or trauma. This study analyzed 23 oral fibroepithelial polypoid lesions retrieved from 21 dogs (2014-2021). All lesions were pedunculated with usually an irregular/cauliflower-like or rarely smooth surface.
