Objectives: Surgical infections represent an increasingly important problem for the National Health System. In this study we retrospectively evaluated the bacterial epidemiology and antimicrobial susceptibility of the microorganisms concerned as well as the utilization of antibiotics in the General and Emergency Surgery wards of a large teaching hospital in southern Italy in the period 2011-2013.
Methods: Data concerning non-duplicate bacterial isolates and antimicrobial susceptibility were retrieved from the Vitek 2 database.

The impact of infectious diseases (ID) specialist consultation in the management of many types of bacterial infections has been fully demonstrated but not for bone and joint infections (BJIs). Nineteen ID Italian centres collected of data from June 2009 to May 2012. Italian guidelines (2009) were used to determine the appropriateness of the diagnostic and therapeutic process of BJIs before and after consulting an ID specialist.

The treatment of coronary chronic total occlusions (CTO) continues to solicit technical innovations. As success primarily depends on crossing the lesion with a wire, all aspects regarding tip shape retention, torque precision, and penetration ability of the guide-wire have greatly influenced new techniques and strategies. The world of interventional cardiology has to look carefully at these developments, and to use them accordingly to improve the success rate in ordinary percutaneous coronary interventions.

Recently, "ipilimumab," an anti-cytotoxic T-lymphocyte antigen-4 (CTLA-4) monoclonal antibody, has been demonstrated to improve overall survival in metastatic melanoma. "CTLA-4" is an immune-checkpoint molecule that downregulates pathways of T-cell activation. Ipilimumab, by targeting CTLA-4, is able to remove the CTLA-4 inhibitory signal, allowing the immune system to react to cancer cells.

Postoperative hypocalcemia is the most frequent complication of total thyroidectomy. It may have a delayed onset, and therefore delays the discharge from the hospital, requiring calcium replacement therapy to alleviate clinical symptoms. During a 7-month period, 2,631 consecutive patients undergoing primary or completion thyroidectomy were prospectively followed up and underwent analysis regarding postoperative hypoparathyroidism.

Among the primary mesenchymal tumors of the hypopharynx and larynx, lipomas are rare. Macroscopically, they often resemble a retention cyst or laryngeal nodule. Spindle cell lipomas (SCLs) are an uncommon variant of lipoma.

The incidence of melanoma is rapidly increasing worldwide and the prognosis of patients with metastatic disease is still poor, with a median survival of 8-9 months and a 3-year overall survival (OS) rate less than 15% [1,2]. A complete surgical excision is the main treatment for primary cutaneous melanoma [3], but controversies about the extension of excision margins still remain [4]. Sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) provides important prognostic and staging data by the identification of regional node-negative patients who would not benefit from a complete nodal dissection.

Normal promyelocytes express CD45RO, while acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) blasts express CD45RA, both isoforms of common leukocyte antigen with mutually exclusive expression. Here we report a patient with accumulation of promyelocytes in the bone marrow and the diagnostic strategy is described along with the ability to quickly discriminate between normal and abnormal cells using the flow cytometric detection of expression of RA/RO isoforms of CD45.

AC133 is a molecule whose expression in the human hematopoietic system is restricted to a subset of CD34+ progenitor/stem cells with long-term repopulating ability. The antigenic features of these cells, like CD34+ cells, are described heterogeneous. The immunophenotypic profile of AC133+ cells, detected by means of dual-color flow cytometry, in bone marrow (BM), cytokine-mobilized peripheral blood (PB) and umbilical cord blood (UCB) was evaluated.
