Cutaneous melanoma (CM) has the highest mortality rates among the most common skin cancers, and its incidence is rising worldwide, thus representing a significant health care burden. CM is considered the most lethal skin cancer if not detected and treated during its early stages. Susceptibility to CM is also associated with an increased presence of atypical nevi and the occurrence of multiple primary melanoma.

Development of an Assay, Based on the BioFilm Ring Test, for Rapid Profiling of Biofilm-Growing Bacteria.

Microbial biofilm represents a major virulence factor associated with chronic and recurrent infections. Pathogenic bacteria embedded in biofilms are highly resistant to environmental and chemical agents, including antibiotics and therefore difficult to eradicate. Thus, reliable tests to assess biofilm formation by bacterial strains as well as the impact of chemicals or antibiotics on biofilm formation represent desirable tools for a most effective therapeutic management and microbiological risk control.

Background: Clinical or quality of life assessments are currently available for psoriasis severity evaluation and therapeutic response. Laboratory scores focused to measure and follow treatment efficacy are lacking at present.

Methods: A microscopic and biomolecular score was designed to monitor skin disease severity and clinical response to anti-psoriatic treatments.

Pathologists who find ectopic glands on the glans and/or on the prepuce, often describe them as Tyson's glands. In this regard, the term Tyson's glands can be replaced by two different descriptive expressions: papillomatosis corona penis and ectopic sebaceous glands. A 15-year-old Caucasian male patient presented to our Institute with multiple and asymptomatic circular skin colored-to-yellowish papules at the level of the foreskin, also affecting the shaft of the penis, where they assumed a linear feature.

Mutation of the Golgi Ca(2+)-ATPase ATP2C1 is associated with deregulated calcium homeostasis and altered skin function. ATP2C1 mutations have been identified as having a causative role in Hailey-Hailey disease, an autosomal-dominant skin disorder. Here, we identified ATP2C1 as a crucial regulator of epidermal homeostasis through the regulation of oxidative stress.

Background: Hailey-Hailey disease (HHD), also known as familial benign chronic pemphigus, is a rare, chronic and recurrent blistering disorder, histologically characterized by suprabasal acantholysis. HHD has been linked to mutations in ATP2C1, the gene encoding the human adenosine triphosphate (ATP)-powered calcium channel pump.

Methods: In this work, the genetically tractable yeast Kluyveromyces lactis has been used to study the molecular basis of Hailey-Hailey disease.

Early Angiosarcoma of the Scalp: A Clinicopathological Pitfall.

Angiosarcoma (AS) is a rare malignant vascular tumor, which affects mainly elderly patients. After the diagnosis, the mean overall survival of patients is 30 months. The variable presentation of the malignancy, the benign appearance of the cutaneous lesions, and the minimal histological changes in early lesions can sometimes delay the correct diagnosis.

Background: Although combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) has saved millions of lives, it is incapable of full immune reconstitution and virus eradication. The transactivator of transcription (Tat) protein is a key human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) virulence factor required for virus replication and transmission. Tat is expressed and released extracellularly by infected cells also under cART and in this form induces immune dysregulation, and promotes virus reactivation, entry and spreading.

The human herpes virus 8 (HHV-8), also known as Kaposi sarcoma-associated herpes virus (KSHV), can infect endothelial cells often leading to cell transformation and to the development of tumors, namely Kaposi's sarcoma (KS), primary effusion lymphoma (PEL), and the plasmablastic variant of multicentric Castleman's disease. KSHV is prevalent in areas such as sub-Saharan Africa and the Mediterranean region presenting distinct genotypes, which appear to be associated with differences in disease manifestation, according to geographical areas. In infected cells, KSHV persists in a latent episomal form.

Background: When a hyaluronic acid dermal device to fill soft tissues is chosen, efficacy, safety and durability are key concerns. This is an open-label prospective study to instrumentally evaluate the effects of HA filler dermal injection on nasolabial folds skin biophysical parameters and augmentation.

Methods: A single Italian site treated female subjects aged 40-55, for nasolabial folds, with a single standardized injection.

Campylobacter jejuni (C. jejuni) bacteremia is difficult to diagnose in individuals with hematological disorders undergoing chemotherapy. The cause can be attributed to the rarity of this infection, to the variable clinical presentation, and to the partial overlapping symptoms underlying the disease.

IgG4-related disease is a recently defined emerging entity. Many different organs may be affected by this disease: pancreas, salivary and lacrimal glands, liver, peritoneum and lung. Also the skin may be affected, as secondary localization, while as primary cutaneous localization it has been rarely described.

Eosinophilic ulcer of the oral mucosa is a rare, self-limiting, chronic and benign lesion of unknown pathogenesis that affects the oral mucosa. We present the case of a 65 year-old Caucasian female with a five month history of a painful ulcer on the lateral side of her tongue. The ulcer was not adhered to the underlying structures and there was no evidence of regional lymph node involvement.

Objective: To investigate the effects of topical application of a Gold Silk Sericin (GSS) complex on biophysical parameters related to skin ageing.

Methods: A range of non-invasive bioengineering methods were deployed in an 8-week randomized, double-blinded, vehicle-controlled, split-face study among 40 female subjects aged 40-70. Endpoints measured included expert grades of skin condition, stratum corneum (SC) hydration, SC barrier function, elasticity and surface topography.

Nonmelanoma skin cancers are the most common malignancies in transplant recipients under immunosuppression; nevertheless, appendage tumors also may appear. The onset of several cutaneous neoplasms in transplant patients can cause deterioration in quality of life of these patients. A 62-year-old white woman patient developed several malignant and benign sebaceous neoplasms during an immunosuppressive treatment for a renal transplant.

Background: Solar lentigines are common benign macular hyperpigmented lesions localized on sun-exposed areas.

Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of a new depigmenting agent containing a retinoid (retinaldehyde), a new phenolic agent (4-(1-phenylethyl)-resorcinol) and a reducing agent (δ-tocopheryl-β-D-glucopyranoside) in the topical treatment of solar lentigines.

Patients And Methods: Twenty patients with solar lentigines of the face and hands applied the depigmenting agent on each lentigo once daily for 12 weeks.
