Drug resistance is one of the main challenges in cancer therapy, including in the treatment of female-specific malignancies, which account for more than 60% of cancer cases among women. Therefore, elucidating the underlying molecular mechanisms is an urgent need in gynecological cancers to foster novel therapeutic approaches. Notably, Notch signaling, including either receptors or ligands, has emerged as a promising candidate given its multifaceted role in almost all of the hallmarks of cancer.

Background: Frail patients are considered at relevant risk of complications due to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and, for this reason, are prioritized candidates for vaccination. As these patients were originally not included in the registration trials, fear related to vaccine adverse events and disease worsening was one of the reasons for vaccine hesitancy. Herein, we report the safety profile of the prospective, multicenter, national VAX4FRAIL study (NCT04848493) to evaluate vaccines in a large trans-disease cohort of patients with solid or hematological malignancies and neurological and rheumatological diseases.

The humanistic burden of vitiligo: a systematic literature review of quality-of-life outcomes.

J Eur Acad Dermatol Venereol

September 2022

Department of Dermatology and Pediatric Dermatology, National Reference Center for Rare Skin Disorders, Hôpital Saint-André, CNRS, UMR-5164, ImmunoConCept, F-33000, Bordeaux, France.

Despite historical mischaracterization as a cosmetic condition, patients with the autoimmune disorder vitiligo experience substantial quality-of-life (QoL) burden. This systematic literature review of peer-reviewed observational and interventional studies describes comprehensive evidence for humanistic burden in patients with vitiligo. PubMed, EMBASE, Scopus and the Cochrane databases were searched through February 10, 2021, to qualitatively assess QoL in vitiligo.

Background: The reliability to non-invasively identify features of inflammatory dermatoses by reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) remains unknown. Lack of formal training among RCM readers can result in inconsistent assessments, limiting clinical utility. Specific consensus terminology with representative images is necessary to ensure consistent feature-level interpretation among RCM readers.

Recognized and Emerging Features of Erythropoietic and X-Linked Protoporphyria.

Diagnostics (Basel)

January 2022

Dipartimento di Medicina Interna, Fondazione IRCCS Cà Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, 20122 Milan, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Erythropoietic protoporphyria (EPP) and X-linked protoporphyria (XLP) are inherited disorders caused by problems with two enzymes needed to make heme, which is important for our blood.
  • EPP has trouble making heme and zinc protoporphyrin because of a deficiency in one enzyme, while in XLP, another enzyme creates too much of a substance called ALA, leading to issues with iron and heme.
  • Both conditions cause a build-up of a compound called protoporphyrin IX (PPIX) in the body, which makes people's skin very sensitive to sunlight and can have other symptoms that are less well-known.

Application of Sebum Lipidomics to Biomarkers Discovery in Neurodegenerative Diseases.

Metabolites

November 2021

Centre for Research and Training in Medicine of Aging, Department of Medicine and Health Science "V. Tiberio", University of Molise, Via De Santis, 86100 Campobasso, Italy.

Lipidomics is strategic in the discovery of biomarkers of neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs). The skin surface lipidome bears the potential to provide biomarker candidates in the detection of pathological processes occurring in distal organs. We investigated the sebum composition to search diagnostic and, possibly, prognostic, biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD).

Bed bugs (Cimex lectularius) have proliferated globally and have become one of the most challenging pests to control indoors. They are nocturnal and use multiple sensory cues to detect and orient towards their human hosts. After feeding, usually on a sleeping human, they return to a shelter on or around the sleeping surface, but not directly on the host.

Oral infection by Human Papillomavirus (HPV) has recently gained great attention because of its involvement in the development of a subset of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma. The role of specific Alpha-HPVs in this regard has been well established, whereas the contribution of other genera is under investigation. Despite their traditional classification as "cutaneous" types, Beta and Gamma HPVs are frequently detected in oral samples.
