Malalignment and lack of surgeon experience are cited as risk factors for prosthetic failure and the need for subsequent revision surgery in total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Various conventional (CON) and computer-assisted surgical (CAS) methods have been developed to try and prevent malalignment and limit outliers. Background: The purpose of this study was to compare the cost differences for single- versus double-incision distal biceps repair at an ambulatory surgery center (ASC) given that similar clinical outcomes have been reported between these methods.

Methods: A retrospective review of financial and medical records was completed for patients who underwent distal biceps tendon repair over a three-year period at a single private orthopedic practice. Variables analyzed include the cost to the ASC of operative time and the cost of differential surgical supplies, specifically implants and disposable supplies.

Diagnosis of lower limb pain in an athlete can be a challenging task due to the variety of potential etiologies and ambiguity of presenting symptoms. Five of the most commonly encountered causes of limb pain in athletes are chronic exertional compartment syndrome (CECS), medial tibial stress syndrome (MTSS), tibial stress fractures, soleal sling syndrome, and popliteal artery entrapment syndrome (PAES). Of these, the least frequent but potentially most serious of the pathologies is PAES.

Monitoring response to treatment is a key element in the management of breast cancer that involves several different viewpoints from surgery, radiology, and medical oncology. In the adjuvant setting, appropriate surgical and pathological evaluation guides adjuvant treatment and follow up care focuses on detecting recurrent disease with the intention of improving long term survival. In the neoadjuvant setting, assessing response to chemotherapy prior to surgery to include evaluation for pathologic response can provide prognostic information to help guide follow up care.

Though cortical abnormalities have been demonstrated in moderate and severe traumatic brain injured (TBI) patients, there have been no studies examining cortical changes following blast related mild TBI (mTBI). The purpose of this study was to determine the effects and functional relevance of blast mTBI on cortical thickness in a small cohort of carefully screened blast injured US Service Members (SM). Twelve SM with mTBI acquired through blast injury were compared to 11 demographically matched control SM without TBI.

Severe burn injury is accompanied by a systemic inflammatory response, making traditional indicators of sepsis both insensitive and nonspecific. To address this, the American Burn Association (ABA) published diagnostic criteria in 2007 to standardize the definition of sepsis in these patients. These criteria include temperature (>39°C or <36°C), progressive tachycardia (>110 beats per minute), progressive tachypnea (>25 breaths per minute not ventilated or minute ventilation >12 L/minute ventilated), thrombocytopenia (<100,000/μl; not applied until 3 days after initial resuscitation), hyperglycemia (untreated plasma glucose >200 mg/dl, >7 units of insulin/hr intravenous drip, or >25% increase in insulin requirements over 24 hours), and feed intolerance >24 hours (abdominal distension, residuals two times the feeding rate, or diarrhea >2500 ml/day).

A fixed drug eruption (FDE) is a cutaneous reaction to an ingested drug that recurs at the same site each time the offending drug is taken. Clinical diagnosis may be difficult as patients often do not consider over-the-counter medications or supplements as part of their reported medication list. In addition, patients may take the offending medication so infrequently that the eruption does not occur often enough to easily allow them to deduce the association.
