Novel multi-spectral short-wave infrared imaging for assessment of human burn wound depth.

Wound Repair Regen

November 2024

Department of Surgery, Center for Organogenesis, Regeneration and Trauma, University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, Texas, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Burn depth determination is essential for effective patient care, but current methods lack precision; however, recent animal studies revealed that Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) imaging can effectively differentiate between superficial and deep burns.
  • A study involving 11 patients utilized a SWIR assessment tool (SWAT) to compare reflectance of multiple SWIR bands with surgeons' classifications and histology results to evaluate burn depths.
  • The findings indicate that while reflectance changes at certain wavelengths correlate with burn depth, multi-spectral imaging through SWAT may offer improved accuracy in assessing burn wound severity.

Introduction: In prolonged care scenarios, where medical evacuations are significantly delayed, the treatment and transport of casualties with extremity musculoskeletal injuries will drain combat units' human resources. Developing enhanced splinting techniques to restore casualty mobility and function can alleviate this drain. To guide this development, a panel of tactical combat and wilderness medicine experts was assembled to determine which extremity musculoskeletal injuries had the greatest impact on unit capabilities, and the materials available for splinting these injuries.

Arthroscopy

September 2024

10th Medical Group, US Air Force Academy, San Antonio, Colorado, U.S.A.

High-level athletes and bodybuilders are constantly seeking novel therapies to enhance recovery and expedite return from injury-injectable peptides are a new and trending therapy that may be the wave of the future in the realm of regenerative medicine research in treating joint injuries and osteoarthritis. Very early in vivo research on pharmacokinetics indicates the possibility that body protection compound 157 (BPC-157) is at the forefront of therapeutic peptides, with early demonstrations of this experimental peptide optimizing endurance training, metabolism, recovery, and tissue repair. Although unregulated and yet readily available for purchase over the internet, there is scarce orthopaedic literature investigating the clinical use and outcomes of such therapeutic peptides in tendon, muscle, and cartilage injury.

There is a broad differential for new-onset cardiac dysrhythmia, and the rapid identification of the underlying cause of these cardiac emergencies can be lifesaving. Identifying wall motion abnormalities on point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) is not a core echocardiography application for Emergency Medicine (EM) physicians. However, ruling in a regional wall motion abnormality can expedite patient-centered care and assist the busy EM physician in high-risk cases.

Successful management of radial and ulnar shaft fractures is an essential skill for all orthopaedic surgeons. The frequent presentation of these injuries coupled with the nuanced anatomic considerations that must be observed for successful outcomes dictate that these injuries require a thorough understanding by the treating surgeon. Intraoperative care to restore the anatomic radial bow and rotation is essential for the resumption of functional forearm rotation postinjury.
