Evaluation of childhood brucellosis in the central Black Sea region.

Brucellosis is a systemic infectious disease that leads to various clinical pictures and is still a significant health problem in Turkey. In this study, 52 pediatric patients diagnosed with brucellosis between January 2008 and December 2013 were examined. Clinical and laboratory findings, response to treatment, prognosis and complications were evaluated.

Seasonal preponderance in testicular torsion: is it a myth?

Objective: In this study, we aimed to investigate the relation of testicular torsion and weather conditions, and to report results from Turkey, a country located between temperate and sub-tropical climate zones.

Methods: A total of 56 patients that had surgery with the diagnosis of testicular torsion in Ankara Education and Research Hospital Urology Clinic between 2005 and 2014 were included in the study. Age of the patient, side of torsion, date and time at onset of pain, scrotal exploration time, ischemia duration, degree of cord torsion, the surgical procedure performed, and scrotal Doppler ultrasound (USG) findings at the time of diagnosis and 1 month after surgery were retrospectively analyzed.

Assessment of skills using a spacer device for a metered-dose inhaler and related independent predictive factors in caregivers of asthmatic preschool children.

Background: The correct use of inhalation devices is essential for successful therapy. We aimed to evaluate the skills in the use of a spacer device with an metered-dose inhaler (MDI) and factors that influence this skill in asthmatic preschool children's caregivers.

Methods: The caregivers of 12-month-old to 72-month-old children were interviewed face-to-face and filled out questionnaires.

Systemic sclerosis (SSc) is a disease characterized by inflammation, vascular abnormalities and fibrosis. The role of Rho/Rho-kinase pathway was demonstrated in the pathogenesis of fibrosis, inflammation and vascular abnormalities. This study was aimed to investigate the relation between SSc and Rho/Rho-kinase gene polymorphisms.

Objective: The aim of this study is to present our initial experience in peritoneal carcinomatosis treatment and the technical details of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) in the light of current literature.

Absence of the lateral and third ventricles associated with holoprosencephaly.

We describe a 6-month-old boy suffering from motor and mental retardation. All radiological features were suggestive of holoprosencephaly with no identifiable lateral or third ventricles and fusion of the thalami.

Emphysematous Cholecystitis in 24-Year-old Male Without Predisposing Factors.

Emphysematous cholecystitis (EC) is a life threatening condition characterized by gangrene of the gallbladder due to an infection with gas-forming organisms. It is more common in elderly men and has been associated with systemic disease, especially diabetes and vascular disease. Computed tomography is the most important and accurate imaging modality for the diagnosis of EC.

Extrapleural hematoma cases treated with video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery.

Extrapleural hematoma is a rare clinical condition whose most common causes are blunt chest trauma, central venous catheterization and ruptured thoracic aortic aneurysm. This study aimed to present three cases that underwent video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery due to extrapleural hematoma. Etiologic factors in these cases were falls from height in two cases and a dialysis catheter placed into the right internal jugular vein in one case.

Rarely seen complication of motor vehicle accidents: Bilateral globe avulsion.

Avulsion of the globe is a rare condition that can occur with severe maxillofacial trauma. A few bilateral cases have been reported. The objective of this study was to present a case of this challenging condition in a 15-year-old male patient who was admitted to the emergency service after a motor vehicle accident.

Pancytopenia As the Initial Manifestation of Brucellosis in Children.

Presenting with severe thrombocytopenia and pancytopenia is rare in children with brucellosis, and at the beginning it can be misdiagnosed as a hematological or a viral hemorrhagic disease. The follow-ups of 52 patients diagnosed with brucellosis from January, 2008, to December, 2013, in our clinic have shown the following results. Eleven out of these 52 patients revealed the fact that they had pancytopenia at the admission phase.

Serotype distribution of Streptococcus pneumoniae in children with invasive diseases in Turkey: 2008-2014.

Successful vaccination policies for protection from invasive pneumococcal diseases (IPD) dependent on determination of the exact serotype distribution in each country. We aimed to identify serotypes of pneumococcal strains causing IPD in children in Turkey and emphasize the change in the serotypes before and after vaccination with 7-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV-7) was included and PCV-13 was newly changed in Turkish National Immunization Program. Streptococcus pneumoniae strains were isolated at 22 different hospitals of Turkey, which provide healthcare services to approximately 65% of the Turkish population.

Electroneuromyographic Features in Fabry Disease: A Retrospective Review.

Introduction: Fabry disease (FD) is an X-linked recessive inherited disorder characterized by lysosomal alpha-galactosidase deficiency. The purpose of our study was to assess and compare the electroneuromyographic (ENMG) findings of 15 patients with Fabry disease and the electroneurographic (ENG) findings of 15 healthy controls. We have not encountered any similar study in the medical literature of our country.

Successful Renal Transplantation, Bone Mineral Densitometry, and Affecting Factors.

Background: Successful renal transplantation corrects many disorders of bone and mineral metabolism owing to the normalization of serum levels of calcium and phosphorus and restoration of calcitriol production. However, successful transplantation does not guarantee complete resolution of the pre-transplantation osteopathy.

Methods: This study evaluated 100 patients who underwent successful renal transplantation.

What Is the Audiological Evaluation Time for those Aged 0-5 Years and Older?

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the time taken to perform audiological evaluation under routine clinical test conditions. We also aimed to investigate relevant variables and reasons for increases in test time.

Materials And Methods: The total test times of 300 patients were recorded and calculated using an "Audiological Evaluation Time Calculation Form.

Ectopic cerebellar tissue of the posterior cranial fossa: diffusion tensor tractography and MR spectroscopy findings.

Purpose: Well-differentiated ectopic cerebellar tissue is extremely rare, with only 12 cases in the literature. Here, we describe a unique case of radiologically proven ectopic cerebellar tissue, using diffusion tensor tractography (DTT) and MR spectroscopy (MRS) findings, in a 6-day-old newborn.

Case: A 6-day-old newborn who had previously a fetal MRI referred to our department with the suspicion of an arachnoid cyst of the posterior fossa.

An Update of Neuroendocrine Tumors of the Female Reproductive System.

Endocrine disease related tumors of female reproductive system mostly seen in ovary. Hormone producing ovarian tumors, ovarian tumor with functioning stroma, tumor related paraneoplastic and paraendocrine syndromes, paraganglioma and neuroendocrine tumors may include in this category. These tumors or its stroma can produce some hormones, which are led to endocrine manifestations.

Factors affecting survival in patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy for periampullary cancers.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the factors affecting survival in patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy for periampullary cancers and to discuss the outcomes of our findings.

Material And Methods: This retrospective study included 79 patients who underwent pancreaticoduodenectomy for periampullary cancers between September 1987 and October 2011 in the Department of General Surgery at Ondokuz Mayis University School of Medicine. The factors of age, tumor localization, tumor size, lymphovascular invasion, status of lymph node metastasis, tumor differentiation, preoperative CA 19-9 levels, preoperative total bilirubin levels, preoperative albumin levels, and preoperative biliary drainage were investigated to determine their influence on survival.
