Objective: Patients with solid malignancies are more vulnerable to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection than the healthy population. The outcome of SARS-CoV-2 infection in highly immunosuppressed populations, such as in patients with hematological malignancies, is a point of interest. We aimed to analyze the symptoms, complications, intensive care unit admissions, and mortality rates of patients with hematological malignancies infected with SARS-CoV-2 in Turkey.

The aim of the current research was to investigate the prognostic significance of pretreatment hemoglobin-to-red cell distribution width ratio (HRR) in patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC). The neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio, systemic immune-inflammation index, lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR) and HRR were analyzed retrospectively to assess their prognostic value using Kaplan-Meier curves and Cox regression analysis in 198 patients with RCC. High HRR (0.

Schwannomas are one of the most common peripheral nerve sheath neoplasms. These tumors, which are characteristically slow-growing and encapsulated, can occur in solitary or multiple forms. Although they usually occur sporadically, they can be seen with various genetic tumor predisposition syndromes such as neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF-2) or schwannomatosis.

Impaired respiratory burst contributes to infections in PKCδ-deficient patients.

J Exp Med

September 2021

Laboratory of Human Genetics of Infectious Diseases, Necker Branch, Institut National de la Santé et de la Recherche Médicale UMR 1163, Paris, France.

Patients with autosomal recessive protein kinase C δ (PKCδ) deficiency suffer from childhood-onset autoimmunity, including systemic lupus erythematosus. They also suffer from recurrent infections that overlap with those seen in patients with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), a disease caused by defects of the phagocyte NADPH oxidase and a lack of reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. We studied an international cohort of 17 PKCδ-deficient patients and found that their EBV-B cells and monocyte-derived phagocytes produced only small amounts of ROS and did not phosphorylate p40phox normally after PMA or opsonized Staphylococcus aureus stimulation.

Factors affecting prognosis of the patients with severe hyponatremia.

Nefrologia (Engl Ed)

June 2021

Nephrology, Bahcelievler Medical Park Hospital, Altinbas University, Istanbul, Turkey.

Introduction: Hyponatremia is one of the most common electrolyte abnormalities in clinical practice. Data regarding factors that have impact on mortality of severe hyponatremia and outcomes of its therapeutic management is insufficient. The present study aimed to examine the factors associated with mortality and the outcomes of treatment in patients with severe hyponatremia.

Background: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a lethal recessive genetic disease caused by loss of function associated with mutations in the CF trans-membrane conductance regulator. It is highly prevalent (approximately 1 in 3,500) in Caucasians. The aim of this study was to compare demographic and clinical features, diagnostic tests, treatments, and complications of patients with CF whose newborn screening (NBS) with twice-repeated immune reactive trypsinogen testing was positive, normal, and not performed.

The role of thrombolysis in submassive pulmonary embolism (PE) is controversial due to the high risk of hemorrhage. This study aimed to evaluate the role of half-dose tissue-type plasminogen activator (rt-PA) in preventing death/hemodynamic decompensation in submassive (intermediate-risk) PE without increasing the risk of bleeding. In a prospective, non-randomized, open-label, single-center trial, we compared 50 mg rt-PA plus low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) with LMWH in submassive (intermediate-risk) PE.

The COVID-19 pandemic has brought countries' health services into sharp focus. It was drawn to our group's attention that healthcare workers (HCWs) had a lower mortality rate against higher COVID-19 incidence compared to the general population in Turkey. Since risk of exposure to tuberculosis bacillus among healthcare workers are higher than the population, we aimed to investigate if there is a relationship between BCG and exposure history with COVID-19 severity in infected HCWs.
