Current guidelines recommend adding long-acting muscarinic antagonists (LAMAs) in patients with uncontrolled asthma, despite the use of moderate to high doses of inhaled steroid-long-acting beta agonists (ICS/LABA). This study aims to analyze the factors related to the prescription of add-on LAMA in clinical practice for asthma patients, shedding light on physicians' preferences. This study included adult asthma patients on add-on LAMA and ICS/LABA monitored for at least one year in a national registry comprising 2053 asthmatics.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study examines how different fat diets and exercise impact biological aging markers, focusing on telomere length, inflammation, and oxidative stress in rats.
  • - Researchers divided 48 rats into six groups to test the effects of unsaturated vs. saturated fat diets and aerobic exercise over 50 days, measuring various biological markers and telomere lengths.
  • - Results showed that unsaturated fat diets and physical activity were linked to longer telomeres and better inflammatory status, while saturated fat diets correlated with higher body weight gain and unfavorable biological markers.

Article Synopsis
  • Direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) are crucial for preventing strokes in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF), but their impact on blood parameters, especially in stable patients, has not been extensively studied.
  • In a retrospective study of 742 AF patients, researchers focused on changes in hemoglobin (Hb) levels after one year on DOACs, ultimately analyzing 530 patients based on whether their Hb change was less than or greater than 2 g/dL.
  • The findings revealed that patients with a greater than or equal to 2 g/dL decrease in Hb had higher baseline Hb levels and highlighted the need for careful monitoring of anemia in AF patients receiving DOACs, even if they seem clinically stable.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on an 8-year-old Labrador dog that suffered from degenerative skeletal changes after being involved in a road traffic accident, eventually leading to its death despite medical interventions.
  • Researchers conducted a CT scan on the dog’s humerus and discovered osteophytes, or bone spurs, that formed a almost complete ring structure, which suggested issues related to joint mobility.
  • During the dissection of the bones, they found a thin membrane covering the supratrochlear foramen that the CT scan did not detect, indicating limitations in imaging techniques for identifying certain soft tissue abnormalities.

This study investigates the effects of the graphene content and applied pressure on the electrical and thermal conductivities of graphite/polyaniline (GP) and graphite/graphene/polyaniline (GGP) composites produced direct mixing method. Based on the electrical and thermal conductivity results, 14 wt% graphene content was found to be the crucial threshold, beyond which extra graphene additions exhibited different behaviors in pressed and unpressed samples. While the electrical conductivity of the unpressed samples increased up to 14 wt% graphene addition, the thermal conductivity increased further after 14 wt% graphene addition.

Introduction: The adequacy of blood flow from the leptomeningeal collaterals is considered one of the most important factors determining the rate of infarct progression and response to acute stroke treatments in the setting of large vessel occlusions. Several patient-related variables, including age, vascular risk factors, and laboratory parameters, have been proposed to explain the interindividual variability of collateral flow among stroke patients. This study aimed to assess how pre-stroke frailty, an aging-related syndrome characterized by a loss in the physiologic reserve of numerous body functions, affected the degree of leptomeningeal collateral flow in the setting of acute ischemic stroke.
