Uncertainty Estimation for Tumor Prediction with Unlabeled Data.

Conf Comput Vis Pattern Recognit Workshops

June 2024

Stony Brook University, Department of Biomedical Informatics, USA.

Estimating uncertainty of a neural network is crucial in providing transparency and trustworthiness. In this paper, we focus on uncertainty estimation for digital pathology prediction models. To explore the large amount of unlabeled data in digital pathology, we propose to adopt novel learning method that can fully exploit unlabeled data.

Background: The genetic basis of hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) is complex and includes variants in Lipase Maturation Factor 1 (LMF1), an endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-chaperone involved in the post-translational activation of lipoprotein lipase (LPL).

Objective: The objective of this study was to identify and functionally characterize biallelic LMF1 variants in patients with HTG.

Methods: Genomic DNA sequencing was used to identify biallelic LMF1 variants in HTG patients without deleterious variants in LPL, apolipoprotein C-II (APOC2), glycosylphosphatidylinositol-anchored high-density lipoprotein binding protein 1 (GPIHBP1) or apolipoprotein A-V (APOA5).

  • Intimate partner violence (IPV) significantly impacts women's health, leading to negative birth outcomes like low birth weight and stillbirth, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).
  • This study utilized data from 20 SSA countries and employed propensity score matching (PSM) to analyze the effects of various forms of IPV on adverse birth outcomes among 13,727 women.
  • The results indicate that IPV increases the risk of adverse birth outcomes by percentages ranging from approximately 2.5% to 8.4%, establishing a causal link that underscores the urgent need for addressing IPV's impact on maternal and infant health.

Article Synopsis
  • The article analyzes medical and demographic indicators impacting elderly patients with type 2 diabetes (DM2) using both domestic and foreign research sources.
  • A systematic review of 51 relevant studies examined the prevalence of comorbid diseases like chronic kidney disease (CKD) and heart failure in elderly DM2 patients compared to the general population.
  • It found that elderly DM2 patients have higher rates of comorbidities, and while cardiovascular and CKD mortality is lower in Russia than abroad, accompanying hypertension significantly raises the risk of negative cardiovascular outcomes.

  • δ-BiO-based materials are studied for their potential use in solid oxide fuel cells due to their high electrical conductivity and thermal stability.
  • Extensive research on BiWO compounds explored their thermal stability, polymorphism, and conduction properties, revealing that these materials are dense and thermally stable up to 900 °C.
  • The study combined theoretical and experimental approaches to analyze electrical transport mechanisms, confirming that the predominant conduction type in BiWO is anionic, achieving significant conductivity values at high temperatures.

An overview about biomarkers in breast cancer: Insights into the diagnostic and prognostic significance.

Clin Chim Acta

February 2025

Laboratory of Molecular Studies and Experimental Therapy, Department of Genetics, Federal University of Pernambuco - Av. Prof. Moraes Rego, 1235. Cidade Universitária Recife, Pernambuco CEP: 50670-901, Brazil. Electronic address:

Breast cancer (BC) is one of the most significant neoplasms globally due to its high incidence and mortality, particularly among females. As a highly heterogeneous pathology, biomarkers are essential for characterizing specific tumors. Currently, several biological processes are well-described in the context of this neoplasm, such as alterations in BRCA1/2, HER, and pathways involving estrogen and progesterone hormone receptors.

Maternal and neonatal risks and outcomes after bariatric surgery: a comparative population based study across BMI categories in Qatar.

Sci Rep

November 2024

Department of Pediatrics and Neonatology, Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Newborn Screening Unit, Women's Wellness and Research Center, Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), Doha, Qatar.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how Bariatric Surgery (BS) affects pregnancy outcomes in women, comparing those who had BS to those in different BMI categories (obesity, overweight, normal weight).
  • A total of 6,212 pregnant women were analyzed, revealing that post-BS women were more likely to experience cesarean deliveries, preterm births, stillbirths, and have low-birth-weight babies.
  • The authors suggest that pregnancies following BS should be regarded as high-risk, emphasizing the need for careful monitoring during antenatal and postnatal care.

Purpose: A theoretical framework based on coherent reflection and filter theory predicts that the phase-gradient delays of stimulus frequency otoacoustic emissions (SFOAEs) are correlated with tuning sharpness in the mammalian cochlea. In this paper, we use a computational model of the cochlea to test this theory and to evaluate how SFOAE phase-gradient delays may be used to estimate the sharpness of cochlear tuning.

Methods: This study is based on a physiologically motivated model which has been previously shown to predict key aspects of cochlear micromechanics.

Penguin colony georegistration using camera pose estimation and phototourism.

PLoS One

October 2024

Department of Ecology & Evolution, Stony Brook University, Stony Brook, New York, United States of America.

Satellite-based remote sensing and uncrewed aerial imagery play increasingly important roles in the mapping of wildlife populations and wildlife habitat, but the availability of imagery has been limited in remote areas. At the same time, ecotourism is a rapidly growing industry and can yield a vast catalog of photographs that could be harnessed for monitoring purposes, but the inherently ad-hoc and unstructured nature of these images make them difficult to use. To help address this, a subfield of computer vision known as phototourism has been developed to leverage a diverse collection of unstructured photographs to reconstruct a georeferenced three-dimensional scene capturing the environment at that location.

The merging of the electronic structure calculations and crossed beam experiments expose the reaction dynamics in the tin (Sn, P) - molecular oxygen (O, XΣ-g) system yielding tin monoxide (SnO, XΣ) along with ground state atomic oxygen O(P). The reaction can be initiated on the triplet and singlet surfaces addition of tin to the oxygen atom leading to linear, bent, and/or triangular reaction intermediates. On both the triplet and singlet surfaces, formation of the tin dioxide structure is required prior to unimolecular decomposition to SnO(XΣ) and O(P).
