Article Synopsis
  • Pre-surgical psychological assessments are increasingly required in the U.S. before surgeries for chronic back pain, with the MMPI-3 being a focal point of evaluation.
  • A study involving 909 patients investigated the effectiveness of the MMPI-3 alongside self-reports on pain, disability, and emotional health before and after surgery.
  • The results showed that MMPI-3 scores added up to 9% more predictive power for post-surgical outcomes, with emotional/internalizing dysfunction being the most significant indicator of poorer recovery.

The anion binding features of diphenylpyrrole-strapped calix[4]pyrrole 1 have been investigated by means of H NMR spectroscopy and ITC (isothermal titration calorimetry), as well as single crystal X-ray diffraction analyses. Receptor 1 bearing an auxiliary pyrrolic NH donor and solubilizing phenyl groups on the strap was found to bind F , Cl , and Br as their tetrabutylammonium salts with high affinity in DMSO-d . In addition, receptor 1 was found to extract the fluoride anion (as both its tetraethylammonium (TEA ) and tetrabutylammonium (TBA ) salts), as well as the chloride anion into chloroform-d from an aqueous source phase.

The present study explored the acceptability, feasibility, fidelity, and outcomes of a young adult adaptation of multidimensional family therapy (MDFT), an evidence-based family treatment originally developed for adolescents. Participants included 22 individuals between the ages of 19 to 25 who were enrolled in a criminal drug court program. MDFT was found to be feasible and was delivered with strong fidelity to young adults and their families.

In this review, we provide an overview of the current understanding of the main mechanisms of pharmacological action of essential oils and their components in various biological systems. A brief introduction on essential oil chemistry is presented to better understand the relationship of chemical aspects with the bioactivity of these products. Next, the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and antimicrobial activities are discussed.

Collaborative collection development: a MedPrint case report.

J Med Libr Assoc

July 2023

Associate Professor, Head of Cataloging and Metadata, Newton Gresham Library, Sam Houston State University, Huntsville, TX 77341.

Background: In response to several of Texas' largest medical libraries being forced to discard all serial print holdings, the Texas A&M University System and University of Texas System's Joint Library Facility (JLF) staff worked to help provide a solution to save and store these resources. This process fire-started a comprehensive effort by JLF staff to contact the National Library of Medicine (NLM) and devise a blueprint that would be used to help save and preserve all serial medical resources listed in NLM's medical retention program.

Case Presentation: In an unprecedented approach, the Texas A&M JLF staff launched efforts to collect and preserve the complete holdings range of all NLM MedPrint periodical runs.

Background: Low back pain (LBP) is a complex condition that is widespread among older Black adults. Nonpharmacologic interventions are recommended as first-line therapy, but their use in practice is limited, possibly due to misunderstanding of their analgesic characteristics.

Aim: To determine the feasibility and acceptability of listening to preferred music at home to relieve pain in older Black adults aged 65 years or older with LBP.

The main aim of this paper was to examine the efficacy and safety of revision endoscopic gastroplasty and some of the adverse events likely to arise from the procedure, as well as the implications for future scholarly research. The study is a systematic review in which the PRISMA protocol was used to govern the article's inclusion and exclusion criteria. The selected studies include those on revising endoscopic gastroplasty's effectiveness and safety.

The Child Attachment Interview (CAI) was designed to assess attachment representation in middle childhood-filling a gap between behavioral paradigms and adult interviews-and has demonstrated adequate psychometric properties in middle childhood and adolescence. To date, the CAI has not been available in Spanish, given the absence of an accepted translation and psychometric data. Spanish is the second most spoken language in the world, and assessment of attachment in an individual's native language is critical given differences in emotional processing, memory, and disclosure in first versus second languages.

Context: Evidence suggests that lower socioeconomic status (SES) and negative social determinants of health (SDOH) contribute to health care disparities. Due to their accessibility in the high school setting, secondary school athletic trainers (SSATs) may encounter patients who are historically underserved in health care, such as patients with low SES. However, a significant gap in knowledge exists regarding how SDOH and SES may influence SSATs' clinical management decisions.

Synthetic cathinones, one of the most prevalent categories of new psychoactive substances, have been posing a serious threat to public health. Methylmethcathinones (MMCs), notably 3-MMC, have seen an alarming increase in their use in the last decade. The metabolism and toxicology of a large majority of synthetic cathinones, including 3-MMC and 2-MMC, remain unknown.

In forensic science, scientific problem-solving is characterized by the recognition of traces as part of iterative reasoning processes to assign meaning to those traces in order to interpret and reconstruct events. Through a set of fundamental principles, the Sydney Declaration presents a foundation of forensic science through the lens of a scientist. The distinction between a scientist and a technician may require clarification-where a prototypical technician follows a prescribed set of 'standard operating procedures' and may be limited in the interpretation of the resultant data, the scientist utilizes knowledge, skills, experience and imagination to identify the issue at hand and develop lines of inquiry for testing and interpretation.

The effective use of point-of-care ultrasound for the diagnosis and treatment of hand conditions is dependent upon a thorough understanding of its anatomic bases. To facilitate this understanding, in-situ cadaveric hand dissections were correlated with handheld ultrasound images in the palm focusing on key areas of clinical relevance. The palms of an embalmed cadaver were dissected, minimizing the reflection of structures whenever possible to emphasize normal relationships and tissue planes.

Although fentanyl and a small number of derivatives used for medical or veterinary procedures are well characterized, physiochemical properties have not been determined for many of the newer fentanyl analogs. Partition coefficients (Log P) were determined for 19 fentalogs using the shake-flask method and liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Experimentally determined partition coefficients were compared with computationally derived data using six independent software sources (ACD/LogP, LogKOWWIN v 1.

Triarchic psychopathy and affective picture processing: An event-related potential study.

Biol Psychol

September 2023

Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences, Texas A&M University, College Station, TX, USA.

Psychopathy and its precursors appear to be associated with abnormal affective response. For example, individuals high in psychopathy show reduced psychophysiological response to unpleasant stimuli, which might explain low levels of empathy in psychopathic individuals, and their pursuit of individual goals without regard for others' wellbeing. In keeping with the notion that psychopathology is best represented on a continuum, the triarchic model suggests that psychopathy is characterized by elevations on three traits: boldness, meanness and disinhibition.

Obesity is one of the most debilitating conditions. In a quest to mitigate disease severity, various interventions have been proposed, with endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG) and laparoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (LSG) being among the recent interventions that have received growing attention. This systematic review sought to conduct a comparative analysis regarding the efficacy, effectiveness, and safety of both interventions.
