School Safety and Mental Health Awareness: Recommendations from K-12 Texas Public School Teachers.

Background: Mass school shootings have created fear in the American public. The results of this fear have been the hardening of schools, lockdowns, and active shooter drills, yet the mass shootings have not ended. The goal of this study was to analyze the mental health awareness of K-12 public schools teachers in Texas with a goal to identify the connections between mental health awareness and school safety.

Wellness Following Wins and Losses Based on Psychological Hardiness in Division I Women's Lacrosse.

Psychological hardiness encompasses three components: commitment, control, and challenge, and illustrates how individuals respond to stressors. Analyzing athletes' responses to wins and losses, depending on their psychological hardiness level, may provide insight of the impact of game outcome on student-athlete wellness. The purpose of this study was to examine postgame subjective wellness scores based on level of psychological hardiness following wins and losses in collegiate female lacrosse athletes.

Differences in presurgical MMPI-3 scores across trajectories of recovery from spine surgery.

Approximately 30% of patients who undergo spinal surgery for chronic back pain continue to experience significant pain and disability up to 2 months following surgery. Prior studies have identified mental health variables including depression and anxiety as predictors of poorer postsurgical outcomes using screening instruments, but no studies have examined long-term outcomes using the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3), a commonly used tool used in presurgical psychological evaluations (PPE). Using group-based trajectory modeling and a sample of 404 spine surgery evaluees, the present study examined the trajectories of changes in disability scores from presurgery through 3, 12, and 24 months postsurgery.

Without clear, explicit communication, people might be encouraged to rely upon contextual information when assessing whether a sexual encounter was consensual.

Quantification of psilocin in human whole blood using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).

There has been burgeoning interest in psilocybin-use for the treatment of various neurological and neurodegenerative diseases. Psilocybin is mistakenly perceived as the principal pharmacologically active compound due to its high concentrations found in magic mushrooms; however, it is the prodrug of psilocin. Despite the expanding body of clinical research seeking to understand the pharmacodynamic/pharmacokinetic properties of psilocin, and its role in inducing dramatic changes to cognitive function, there has not been a corresponding increase in the development of sensitive analytical methods that can quantify psilocin in different biological fluids.

Objectives: Cancer is a life-changing experience, and side effects from treatment can make it difficult for survivors to return to their pre-cancer "normal life." We explored the "new normal" and barriers to achieving it among lung cancer survivors who underwent surgery.

Introduction: Loneliness has been shown to affect both mental and physical health, and was a major concern even before the COVID-19 pandemic. During the COVID-19 distancing measures, millions of people took to social media to express their feelings and seek social support.

Methods: In this mixed-methods study, we examine the self-disclosure of loneliness by users identifying as male or female (via self-disclosed naming conventions) on Twitter before and during the COVID-19 "lockdowns.

Hypertension effects of the COVID-19 lockdowns: Evidence from a repeated cross-sectional survey in Peru.

Using data from Peru and a quasi-experimental approach, we document significant increases in arterial blood pressure and in the incidence of arterial hypertension caused by the restrictive measures employed by the Peruvian authorities during the COVID-19 pandemic. The effects are more pronounced for women, older respondents, and urban residents. The effects are statistically significant and high in magnitude relative to the pre-pandemic incidence of disease in the Peruvian population.

Trivalent lanthanide ions are known for their ability to interact with calcium-binding sites in various proteins. There is a need to assess the bioavailability of lanthanides and other heavy metals introduced into the body as components of implants or as contrast agents. This study aimed to develop a method to address bioavailability and/or presence of trivalent lanthanide ions by examining electrophoretic mobility in an agarose gel of a plasmid harboring the human metallothionein-II gene ().

Factors influencing the in situ formation of Δ9-THC from cannabidiol during GC-MS analysis.

Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is widely used for the identification of cannabinoids in seized plant material. Conditions used for instrumental analysis should maximize decarboxylation, while minimizing the in situ production of Δ9-THC inside the GC inlet. In this study, decarboxylation of the acidic Δ9-THC precursor and in situ degradation of cannabidiol (CBD) were investigated using seven commercial GC liners with different deactivation chemistries and geometries.

Latent Profile Analysis Predicting Recidivism Among Women Who Have Sexually Offended.

The few existing typology studies on women who have sexually offended (WWSO) have largely been limited by small sample sizes, have not included scale scores from risk assessments, or used recidivism within their typology (instead of using typologies to predict recidivism). In our sample of 241 WWSO, we conducted a latent profile analysis and observed four, distinct profiles: "low-risk WWSO," characterized by fewer criminal history incidents and lower risk-assessment scores; "problem-endorsing WWSO," with higher probability of endorsing various life problems such as educational/employment and emotional/personal issues; "antisocial WWSO" with more criminal history incidents, alcohol/drug problems, and higher scores on psychopathy; and "combined WWSO" with characteristics of both the problem-endorsing and antisocial profiles. This last profile showed elevations in general and/or violent recidivism risk, but relatively low recidivism.

State Higher Education Funding during COVID-19: Exploring State-Level Characteristics Influencing Financing Decisions.

Building on research examining state financing for higher education, our qualitative comparative case study investigates state policymakers' decisions for funding public higher education during the COVID-19 crisis in California and Texas. These states were purposively selected based on the size of their postsecondary sector, state partisanship, and higher education funding responses during the pandemic. Moreover, these states represent two of the largest public postsecondary enrollments nationally and serve a racially and ethnically diverse student population.

The detection of intact explosives in the field provides a unique challenge for investigators, considering the sensitive and dangerous nature of these samples. Handheld Raman instruments have grown in popularity for the analysis of unknown samples in the field, combining speed of data collection and reliability with a size that allows for the instruments to be field portable. Handheld Raman instruments are used commonly in the field, and yet there is very little research on the detection capabilities of these instruments, specifically for explosive compounds.

Genotyping strategies for tissues fixed with various embalming fluids for human identification, databasing, and traceability.

Within anatomical willed body programs and skeletal collections, whole bodies and their disassociated limbs and organs are identified and tracked. However, if these tracking mechanisms fail, DNA recovered from the formalin-fixed tissues/organs could provide an additional layer of quality assurance. Embalming fluids preserve biological tissues; however, they also damage, fragment, and cross-link DNA and protein molecules.

Examining ways to score the Epidemic-Pandemic Impacts Inventory in parents of young children.

The Epidemic-Pandemic Impacts Inventory (EPII) is a 92-item measure developed to assess tangible impacts of the pandemic including both negative (work, home, social, and health) and positive changes. The EPII has been used in a variety of studies, but a standard scoring system has not been determined. Parents of young children ( = 216) completed the EPII, Perceived Stress Scale, Parenting Stress Scale, Positive and Negative Affect Scale (PANAS-PA and PANAS-NA), and COVID-19 Stress Scale (CSS) online September 2021-May 2022.

A new practical imaging technique was presented for metamaterial characterization and investigation by visualizations of the magnetic microwave near-field (H-MWNF) distributions on a metamaterial's surface using the method of thermo-elastic optical indicator microscopy (TEOIM). ITO-based transparent and ceramic-based opaque metamaterial structures were designed for magnetic near-field visualization. Depending on the incident microwave field polarization, the TEOIM system allows the characterization of the metamaterial properties and microwave interaction behavior.
