Background And Objective: The widespread adoption and rapid integration of new technologies and techniques in endoscopic and laser bladder interventions, particularly endoscopic enucleation, have led to new types of bladder injuries. This underscores the need for an intraoperative injury classification system. This study aims to develop and validate the Bladder Injury Classification System for Endoscopic Procedures (BICEP), which standardizes the classification of complications and intervention requirements.

Advancing fracture management: the role of minimally invasive osteosynthesis in orthopedic trauma care.

Eur J Trauma Emerg Surg

October 2024

Department of Orthopedics and Traumatology, Salzburg University Hospital, Paracelsus Medical University, Salzburg, Austria.

Article Synopsis
  • Minimally Invasive Osteosynthesis (MIO) is a technique for orthopedic surgery that aims to provide less invasive treatment for fractures but currently lacks standardized guidelines.
  • A study analyzing 57 fractures in 53 patients treated with MIO between March 2017 and January 2022 focused on surgical techniques and outcomes, revealing low complication rates and effective healing.
  • The research concluded by establishing general principles for MIO, which can improve surgical efficiency and patient recovery across various types of fractures and locations.

: The objective of this study was to prospectively assess the extent to which magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) can differentiate malignant from benign lesions of the testis. : All included patients underwent multiparametric testicular MRI, including diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and subtraction dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE) magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Subsequently, all patients underwent a histopathological examination via orchiectomy or testicular biopsy/partial resection.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate potential synergistic effects of a single, local application of human umbilical cord MSC-derived sEVs in combination with a low dose of recombinant human rhBMP-2 to promote the regeneration of a metaphyseal femoral defect in an osteoporotic rat model.

Methods: 6 weeks after induction of osteoporosis by bilateral ventral ovariectomy and administration of a special diet, a total of 64 rats underwent a distal femoral metaphyseal osteotomy using a manual Gigli wire saw. Defects were stabilized with an adapted Y-shaped mini-locking plate and were subsequently treated with alginate only, or alginate loaded with hUC-MSC-sEVs (2 × 10), rhBMP-2 (1.

Background: Our aim was to evaluate the effect of COVID-19 infection on male fertility and sexual function.

Methods: Thirty-one patients were investigated over a mean follow-up of 90 days (22-527) after a COVID-19 infection. Erectile dysfunction (ED), blood tests for sexual hormones, semen analysis including analysis of oxidative stress (OS), as well as COVID-19 antibody titer and the nasal COVID-19 PCR test were evaluated pre- and post-infection.

Article Synopsis
  • * Out of 258 patients monitored over 18 months, the M371 test achieved 100% sensitivity and 96.3% specificity for relapse detection, with some ability to detect relapses earlier.
  • * While the M371 test shows promise for routine use in monitoring relapses, postoperative levels of M371 did not predict future relapses, and the time advantage for earlier detection was not significant.

Purpose: To report a series of three patients with traumatic renal AV fistulas after blunt renal laceration.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the renal trauma cases treated in the Department of Urology of Salzburg University Clinic during a time period of 10 years concerning traumatic AV fistula formation and other clinical parameters.

Results: In total, 3 cases of traumatic AV fistula formation were identified in 106 blunt renal trauma patients (2.

Purpose: To learn about the history and development of en bloc resection of bladder tumour (ERBT), and to discuss its future directions in managing bladder cancer.

Methods: In this narrative review, we summarised the history and early development of ERBT, previous attempts in overcoming the tumour size limitation, consolidative effort in standardising the ERBT procedure, emerging evidence in ERBT, evolving concepts in treating large bladder tumours, and the future directions of ERBT.

Results: Since the first report on ERBT in 1980, there has been tremendous advancement in terms of its technique, energy modalities and tumour retrieval methods.

Background/objective: To compare the prehospital treatment modalities and intervention regimens for major trauma patients with comparable injury patterns between Austria and Germany.

Patients And Methods: This analysis is based on data retrieved from the TraumaRegister DGU®. Data included severely injured trauma patients with an injury severity score (ISS) ≥ 16, an age ≥ 16 years, and who were primarily admitted to an Austrian (n = 4186) or German (n = 41,484) level I trauma center (TC) from 2008 to 2017.

The aim of this current study was to establish a metaphyseal femoral non-union model in osteoporotic rats by comparing a power tool versus a manual tool for fracture creation. Twelve adult female Sprague Dawley rats were ovariectomized (OVX) and received a special diet for 6 weeks. Biweekly pQCT measurements confirmed a significant reduction in the cancellous and total bone mineral density in OVX rats compared to control (CTRL) animals.

Article Synopsis
  • The study assessed whether follow-up chest X-rays (CXRs) are necessary for patients with fewer than three rib fractures and no respiratory distress after a week in the hospital.
  • It analyzed 249 patients, mostly older adults, over a median follow-up period of 9 days, revealing only a small percentage (1.6%) needed further intervention for complications like pneumothorax.
  • The findings suggest that routine follow-up CXRs might not be needed, and symptom-triggered imaging could be more effective and cost-efficient.

Article Synopsis
  • * High levels of antibiotic resistance were found, with patients showing resistance to an average of 8.6 out of 11 tested antibiotics, indicating a serious public health issue in the region.
  • * Key factors linked to bacterial growth included older age, being female, and the presence of pus and epithelial cells in urine, suggesting a need for better antibiotic management and more urine culture testing in West Africa.

Background: Periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) are a major concern in shoulder arthroplasty, which in some cases require two-stage exchange. While it was shown that low-virulence bacteria are the most isolated pathogens in shoulder PJI, little is known about changes in microbiological spectrum and resistance patterns during two-stage revision.

Methods: This retrospective study included all patients (n = 25) who received a two-stage revision from January 2011 to December 2020 for shoulder PJI in one institution.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed geriatric odontoid fractures, distinguishing between stable (SF) and unstable (UF) types to assess fusion rates and treatment outcomes.
  • A total of 89 patients over 65 years with type II and III fractures were evaluated using CT scans, revealing that angulation and displacement significantly correlated with stability classification.
  • The results showed a high consolidation rate of 79% for SFs, mainly managed non-operatively, while UFs achieved a 100% union rate with surgical intervention, suggesting the need for tailored approaches in geriatric fracture management.

Background: In Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) refractory non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC), radical cystectomy is the gold standard. The advent of immune checkpoint inhibitors (CPIs) has permanently changed the therapy landscape of bladder cancer (BC). This article presents a systematic review of immune-modulating (IM) therapies (CPIs and others) in BCG-refractory NMIBC.

The repair of large bone defects remains challenging and often requires graft material due to limited availability of autologous bone. In clinical settings, collagen sponges loaded with excessive amounts of bone morphogenetic protein 2 (rhBMP-2) are occasionally used for the treatment of bone non-unions, increasing the risk of adverse events. Therefore, strategies to reduce rhBMP-2 dosage are desirable.
