Reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) are emerging as a novel antibacterial strategy to combat the alarming increase in antimicrobial resistance (AMR). RONS can inhibit bacterial growth through reactions with cellular molecules, compromising vital biological functions and leading to cell death. While their mechanisms of action have been studied, many remain unclear, especially in biologically relevant environments.

Urbanisation stands as a primary driver of biodiversity loss globally, reshaping natural landscapes and imposing novel environmental conditions upon organisms. This ecological novelty poses challenges, and species capable of thriving in urban environments are considered tolerant. Among vertebrates, anurans are the most susceptible to land-use changes, mainly due to their life history and morphological traits.

Background And Aims: Both obesity and iron deficiency are public health problems. The association between the two problems could be explained by chronic low-grade inflammation in obesity, which could stimulate hepcidin expression and modify iron concentration that the consumption of high-protein diets could prevent. Thus, this study aimed to compare the effects of high-protein diets with a predominance of animal or vegetable protein on serum hepcidin and iron concentrations in adults with obesity.

Objectives: To assess work history, occupational exposure, smoking, and biomass fuel use in a Mexican IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) cohort.
Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study among patients with IgG4-RD. A standardised questionnaire was used to collect data on occupational, smoking, and biomass fuel exposure.

Background: Endovascular therapy with balloon percutaneous angioplasty (PTA) in the femoro-popliteal segment is frequently performed, however, long-term favorable outcomes and patency remain challenging, with restenosis rates reaching 60% post-standard balloon angioplasty. Drug-coated balloons (DCBs) have shown promise in improving these outcomes; Paclitaxel, used in DCBs, inhibits hyperplasia and smooth muscle cell proliferation, reducing restenosis; however, the optimal dose of Paclitaxel remains unclear, with high-dose (HD-DCB [>3 mg/mm]) and low-dose (LD-DCB [<2.0 mg/mm]) options available.

Objective: Evaluate the efficacy and safety of guselkumab, an interleukin (IL)-23 inhibitor, in a Phase 2, multicentre, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study of patients with active lupus nephritis (LN).
Methods: Adults (18-75 years) with active LN (Class III-IV proliferative nephritis [kidney biopsy] and urine protein-to-creatinine ratio [UPCR)] of ≥ 1 mg/mg despite standard-of-care therapy) were randomized (1:1; planned sample = 60) to receive intravenous infusions of guselkumab 400 mg or placebo at Weeks 0, 4, and 8, then subcutaneous injections (guselkumab 200 mg or placebo) at Week12 and every 4 weeks through Week48 in addition to their background therapy. The primary end point was achievement of ≥ 50% decrease in proteinuria from baseline at Week24.

Many species of mushroom-forming fungi have been harvested in the wild and used for food and medicine for thousands of years. In Brazil, the knowledge of the diversity of wild edible mushrooms remains scattered and poorly studied. Based on new samples, bibliographic records revision, and searches through the GenBank, we recorded 409 species of wild edible mushrooms in Brazil, of which 350 can be safely consumed and 59 are edible but with conditions.

Habitat discontinuity of aquatic environments is a serious problem that might hamper the different activities performed by organisms. When combined with contamination, the consequences for the population's dynamics might be exacerbated, particularly regarding foraging activity. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the combined effects of habitat discontinuity and contamination on the foraging behavior by zebrafish (Danio rerio) and on their ability to explore heterogeneous landscapes.

Reconstructing ear defects in very elderly patients is challenging, but one-step procedures are beneficial due to reduced morbidity and fewer hospital visits while maintaining ear size, shape, and symmetry. In 2018, Jaber . introduced a 90° earlobe rotation technique to repair full-thickness auricular defects while preserving the earlobe.

This article discusses the experience of a permanent health education initiative focused on institutional racism with health professionals from the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS) holding management positions in a municipality in the interior of Bahia, in Northeastern Brazil. A workshop was held in September 2022, based on a problematizing methodology called the Maguerez Arc, conducted by residents of the Multiprofessional Family Health Program. Ten managers participated in the workshop, most of whom were women.

Molossus molossus is a widely distributed neotropical bat species in the Americas, often found in urban areas. This study evaluated climate change effects on the potential geographic distribution of M. molossus, a natural host of zoonotic pathogens such as Orthohantavirus, in the Neotropical region.

Introduction: Many factors influence how doctors make treatment decisions. The study compares the outcomes of patients with rheumatic diseases and adequate control (AC) whose treating rheumatologists prescribed their first choice of treatment (FCHO) versus the second choice (SCHO) and the motivations behind them. It also investigates the motivations associated with FCHO.

Formic acid is consistently produced and detected in prebiotic chemistry experiments, constituting a precursor of many carboxylic acids and amino acids. Its behavior with exposure to gamma radiation varies with the pH and solution concentration. This work aimed to model different environmental conditions for formic acid under ionizing radiation using a system of coupled differential equations based on chemical kinetics.

Obesity is one of the non-communicable chronic diseases with the highest increase in recent decades in Latin America, affecting children, adolescents, and especially young adults. Forty percent of adults have a body mass index greater than 25 kg/m2. Numerous studies have demonstrated a relationship between obesity and cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart failure, cardiac arrhythmias, diabetes, sleep apnea, and oncological diseases, among others.

Pharmacological treatment of obesity is passing through many changes in the last decades; different agents have been approved, and newer options are leaning towards higher efficacy and a more favourable safety profile; however, medications approved for a longer time are still available and useful for many patients. This document is an 2024 Update Position Statement of Specialists from the Brazilian Association for the Study of Obesity and Metabolic Syndrome (Abeso) and the Brazilian Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism (SBEM), with the aim of reviewing all the approved medications for the management of obesity in Brazil (sibutramine, orlistat, liraglutide, semaglutide and bupropion/naltrexone fixed dose), with the addition of tirzepatide, that is approved in other countries and likely approved soon in Brazil. The review is focused on efficacy, safety profile and the impact of drugs (based on existing studies) on different comorbidities.

Coastal marine macrophytes are critical ecosystem engineers providing valuable ecosystem services. However, they experience detrimental impacts from climate change-induced stresses such as marine heatwaves (MHW), which are becoming more intense and frequent. This study investigated trait responses in real-term heatwaves, Continuous (1MHW) and Consecutive (with a 4-day lag phase, 2MHW), on two key macrophytes, the seaweed Fucus vesiculosus and seagrass Zostera marina.

Background: There is a lack of information from Brazil regarding therapies used and outcomes in patients with acute coronary syndrome with ST elevation (STEMI).
Objectives: To evaluate evidence-based therapies, occurrence of outcomes, reperfusion use, and predictors of not receiving reperfusion in patients with STEMI in a national multicenter registry.
Methods: Patients with STEMI from the ACCEPT registry, with up to 12 hours of symptoms, were followed for 1 year for the occurrence of major adverse cardiovascular events.
