Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the effectiveness of the Milan System for Reporting Salivary Gland Cytopathology (MSRSGC) in evaluating fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) of minor salivary glands (MiSGs), which is less understood compared to major salivary glands (MSGs).
  • A review of 43 MiSG FNAC cases showed high diagnostic accuracy and identified a risk of malignancy of 39%.
  • The findings suggest that while the MSRSGC is useful for categorizing MiSG lesions, certain characteristics, like mucinous cyst contents, may require special attention compared to MSGs.

Article Synopsis
  • - Pleomorphic adenomas (PAs) are the most common benign tumors found in salivary glands, primarily affecting the parotid gland but occasionally appearing in other locations like the submandibular gland.
  • - A unique case presented a 35-year-old male with a PA involving multiple areas (parotid, submandibular gland, and parapharyngeal space) that was misidentified as a slow-flow malformation on MRI.
  • - The diagnosis was confirmed via fine needle aspiration cytology, and the patient was treated conservatively due to potential surgical risks, emphasizing the need for precise diagnostic methods when evaluating complex salivary gland tumors.

Cystadenomas are benign neoplasms found in major and minor salivary glands. In cases where both oncocytic cells and papillary architecture, without a lymphoid component, exist, the lesion is called oncocytic papillary cystadenoma (OPC). OPCs are rarely encountered in the laryngeal region and that is why they are usually misdiagnosed as other types of laryngeal tumors.

Dysgenetic polycystic disease, also known just as polycystic disease, is a very rare developmental abnormality affecting the salivary gland duct system. This entity has been reported in only 21 patients previously, although a careful review suggests only 16 patients have histological evidence of the disease. In previously reported cases, this lesion most commonly presents as either an incidental finding or as a swelling affecting the parotid glands bilaterally, or rarely the submandibular glands bilaterally.

Pleomorphic adenoma affects mostly the parotid gland (85%), submandibular glands (5%), and the minor salivary glands (5%). They are usually referred to as benign mixed tumors because they are composed of both epithelial cells, which are cells from the body's surface, and myoepithelial cells, present inside glands to aid in secretion. An 88-year-old male who had an ulcer for 10 days and a three to four-month-old swelling on his palate arrived in the OPD.

Background: Minor salivary glands can be found in the ventral and anterior part of the tongue; these glands can rarely develop mucoceles that, due to their rarity and their unusual clinical appearance, may present an interesting differential diagnosis. Mucoceles appear as an exophytic, sometimes pedunculated, lesion, which is a feature that is due to the absence of a capsule; thus, the glands are right beneath the mucosa and over the muscle tissue. The aim of this article is to retrospectively present and discuss the anatomy, pathology, clinical features and therapy of several cases of Blandin-Nunh mucoceles collected from two different institutions.
