Training of European thoracic surgeons is subject to huge variations in terms of length of training, content of training and operative experience during training. Harmonization of training outcomes has been approached by creating the European Board of Thoracic Surgery, which has been accredited by the European Union of Medical Specialists (UEMS); however, a clear description of the content of training is lacking. Building on their recognized experience with curriculum building, task forces of the European Respiratory Society and the European Society of Thoracic Surgery agreed on a joint task force on training in thoracic surgery.

leaves are popularly used against snakebites in Brazil. The hydroethanolic extract from aerial parts of (HEGg) was assayed against the neurotoxicity and myotoxicity induced by venom. A traditional myographic technique was applied for neurotoxicity and the resulting muscles were treated routinely by light microscopy analysis for myotoxicity.

Unlabelled: Mature microRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-protein coding RNAs that modulate gene expression after transcription. Few studies have shown that male breast cancer (MBC) shows distinctive miRNAs pattern, suggesting its relevance in this pathology. To study this, we performed a profile of 800 miRNAs in 9 MBC samples and in normal epithelial cells of 3 MBC cases.

Sub-THz Imaging Using Non-Resonant HEMT Detectors.

Sensors (Basel)

February 2018

Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Imperial College, South Kensington Campus, London SW7 2AZ, UK.

Plasma waves in gated 2-D systems can be used to efficiently detect THz electromagnetic radiation. Solid-state plasma wave-based sensors can be used as detectors in THz imaging systems. An experimental study of the sub-THz response of II-gate strained-Si Schottky-gated MODFETs (Modulation-doped Field-Effect Transistor) was performed.

Bronchoscopic Lung Volume Reduction.

Clin Chest Med

March 2018

Bronchology and Interventional Pulmonology Unit, IIS-Fundación Jiménez Díaz, CIBERES, Avenida Reyes Catolicos No 2, Madrid 28040, Spain.

Article Synopsis
  • The National Emphysema Treatment Trial study established lung volume reduction (LVR) as a treatment option for advanced obstructive lung disease, but high surgical complication rates prompted the development of bronchoscopic LVR (BLVR).
  • Current BLVR methods primarily include coils and unidirectional endobronchial valves, with the choice depending on the specific characteristics of the emphysema and whether collateral ventilation is present.
  • It is highly recommended that patients are evaluated at specialized centers experienced in interventional pulmonology and BLVR management for optimal care.

Perioperative hypersensitivity reactions constitute a first-line problem for anesthesiologists and allergists. Therefore, hospitals should have a consensus protocol for the diagnosis and management of these reactions. However, this kind of protocol is not present in many hospitals, leading to problems with treatment, reporting of incidents, and subsequent etiological diagnosis.

Background: Family history (FH) of pancreatic cancer (PC) has been associated with an increased risk of PC, but little is known regarding the role of inherited/environmental factors or that of FH of other comorbidities in PC risk. We aimed to address these issues using multiple methodological approaches.

Methods: Case-control study including 1431 PC cases and 1090 controls and a reconstructed-cohort study (N = 16 747) made up of their first-degree relatives (FDR).

Background: Facial lines and wrinkles are strongly influenced by individual differences in anatomy and muscle activity and no single injection protocol will suit all patients. However, there is only limited information in the published literature on how to develop a tailored approach to botulinum toxin treatment.

Methods: An expert panel of physicians was convened to establish a consensus on developing an individualized approach to treatment of the forehead with incobotulinumtoxinA.

Video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS) is gradually replacing conventional open thoracotomy as the standard approach of many lung resections and thoracic surgical trainees and experienced surgeons must learn and master this technique. Simulation based training may be a good option to acquire or improve these advanced skills, however realistic and inexpensive simulators are not accessible or commercially available. We developed a low cost and hi fidelity simulation model using porcine heart-lung blocks.

Prevalence and clinical features of adverse food reactions in Portuguese children.

Allergy Asthma Clin Immunol

September 2017

CICS-Health Sciences Research Centre, University of Beira Interior, Avenida Infante D. Henrique, Covilhã, 6200-506 Portugal.

Background: The prevalence of adverse food reactions (AFR) has been increasing in the western world. Clinical manifestations are diversified and it may not be possible to clinically discriminate between IgE and non-IgE mediated AFR. In Portugal, the prevalence of AFR and food allergies in children is not known.

Former mine exploitations entail a serious threat to surrounding ecosystems as after closure of mining activities their unmanaged wastes can be a continuous source of toxic trace elements. Quite often these mine sites are found within agricultural farming areas, involving serious hazards as regards product (feed/food) quality. In this work a grazing land impacted by the abandoned mine exploitation of an arsenical deposit was studied so as to evaluate the fate of arsenic (As) and other trace elements and the potential risks involved.

Background: Naevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by developmental alterations and multiple basal cell carcinomas. Mutations in PTCH1, which encodes a membrane receptor for Sonic Hedgehog, are associated with the development of the disease. Most of them produce a truncated protein, which is unable to suppress Smoothened protein and continuously activates the downstream pathway.

Asthma is an airway disease characterised by chronic inflammation with intermittent or permanent symptoms including wheezing, shortness of breath, chest tightness, and cough, which vary in terms of their occurrence, frequency, and intensity. The most common associated feature in the airways of patients with asthma is airway inflammation. In recent decades, efforts have been made to characterise the heterogeneous clinical nature of asthma.

The APC/C-Cdh1 ubiquitin-ligase complex targets cell cycle regulators for proteosomal degradation and helps prevent tumor development and accumulation of chromosomal aberrations. Replication stress has been proposed to be the main driver of genomic instability in the absence of Cdh1, but the real contribution of APC/C-Cdh1 to efficient replication, especially in normal cells, remains unclear. Here we show that, in primary MEFs, acute depletion or permanent ablation of Cdh1 slowed down replication fork movement and increased origin activity.

Background: With the expected increase in the numbers of persons with dementia, providing timely, adequate, and affordable care and support is challenging. Assistive and health technologies may be a valuable contribution in dementia care, but new challenges may emerge.

Objective: The aim of our study was to review the state of the art of technologies for persons with dementia regarding issues on development, usability, effectiveness and cost-effectiveness, deployment, and ethics in 3 fields of application of technologies: (1) support with managing everyday life, (2) support with participating in pleasurable and meaningful activities, and (3) support with dementia health and social care provision.

Dyslipidemia and oxidation of low density lipoproteins (LDL) are recognized as critical factors in the development of atherosclerosis. Healthy dietary patterns, with abundant fruit and vegetable consumption, may prevent the onset of these risk factors due to the presence of phytochemical compounds. Strawberries are known for their high content of polyphenols; among them, flavonoids are the major constituents, and it is presumed that they are responsible for the biological activity of the fruit.

Purpose: Lower serum testosterone levels correlate with improved cause specific survival and longer time to progression in year 1 of continuous androgen deprivation in men with prostate cancer. ICELAND was a large European study demonstrating the efficacy of leuprorelin (Eligard®) during continuous androgen deprivation. In this post hoc analysis we investigated serum testosterone levels within year 1 of continuous androgen deprivation to determine survival and time to progression.
