Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to identify how different exposures, both in and out of healthcare settings, affect the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection among healthcare personnel (HCP) and the role of respiratory protection.
  • It included 1,130 HCP from 67 countries, comparing 244 individuals with confirmed COVID-19 to 886 healthy controls, and collected data through an online survey.
  • Results showed that non-aerosol-generating contact with COVID-19 patients and activities outside work, like large gatherings, increased infection risk, while proper use of respiratory protection and specific PPE reduced the odds of infection.

To assess the influence of age and skill level on handball throwing kinematics and performance, 126 participants were distributed into groups according to their skill level (elite or recreational) and age group (U12, U16 or +18). Each participant performed three sets of 10 throws, aiming to hit a target (40 × 40 cm) located in the right corner of the goal. During testing, kinematic data were recorded and throwing performance (accuracy and velocity) was measured.

University of Salamanca, Spain; Asthma, Allergic and Adverse Reactions (ARADyAL) Network for Cooperative Research in Health of Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Salamanca University Hospital, Salamanca, Spain.

Objective: To evaluate the costs associated with evaluation of β-lactam allergy in children labeled as allergic.

Study Design: We performed a prospective year-long real life observational study designed to evaluate all pediatric patients with suspected β-lactam allergy who consulted for allergy evaluation. Direct and indirect costs were systematically recorded.

Real-World Outcomes in First-Line Treatment of Metastatic Castration-Resistant Prostate Cancer: The Prostate Cancer Registry.

Target Oncol

June 2020

Oncology Division, Hospital de Santa Maria, Instituto de Medicina Molecular, Faculdade de Medicina, Universidade de Lisboa, 1649-035, Lisbon, Portugal.

Background: Metastatic prostate cancer has a 30% 5-year survival rate despite recent therapeutic advances. There is a need to improve the clinical understanding and treatment of this disease, particularly in the real-world setting and among patients who are under-represented in clinical trials.

Objective: We aimed to evaluate the characteristics and clinical outcomes of patients who received their first treatment for metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) in routine clinical practice, independent of treatment used, including subgroups with baseline cardiac disease, diabetes mellitus, or visceral metastases.

Introduction: A Spanish real-world study in patients with severe persistent asthma who achieved asthma control after a one-year treatment with omalizumab highlighted the phenotypic heterogeneity of these patients (FENOMA study). In this subanalysis, we describe the clinical improvement in patients with severe allergic asthma in this study (positive skin test and IgE level 30-1500 IU/mL); n=240.

Patients And Methods: FENOMA was an observational, multicentre, retrospective study in 345 patients achieving asthma control according to Spanish guidelines (GEMA).

Background: Atopic dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin disorder that affects up to 15-20% of the population and is characterized by recurrent eczematous lesions with intense itching. As a heterogeneous disease, multiple factors have been suggested to explain the nature of atopic dermatitis (AD), and its high prevalence makes it necessary to periodically compile and update the new information available. In this systematic review, the focus is set at the genetic and epigenetic studies carried out in the last years.

Pancreatic Cancer Risk in Relation to Lifetime Smoking Patterns, Tobacco Type, and Dose-Response Relationships.

Cancer Epidemiol Biomarkers Prev

May 2020

Epithelial Carcinogenesis Group, Madrid, Spanish National Cancer Research Centre (CNIO), Madrid, Universitat Pompeu Fabra, Departament de Ciències Experimentals i de la Salut, Barcelona, and CIBERONC, Spain.

Background: Despite smoking being a well-established risk factor for pancreatic cancer, there is a need to further characterize pancreatic cancer risk according to lifespan smoking patterns and other smoking features, such as tobacco type. Our aim was to deeply investigate them within a large European case-control study.

Methods: Tobacco smoking habits and other relevant information were obtained from 2,009 cases and 1,532 controls recruited in the PanGenEU study using standardized tools.

We report on the case of spontaneous rupture of an On-X-pure pyrolytic carbon mechanical valve prosthesis implanted seven years earlier, in a mitral position, at our hospital. The patient was admitted with valvular dysfunction and acute pulmonary edema requiring emergency surgery (prosthesis replacement); the absence of a leaflet was confirmed intraoperatively. The patient presented severe respiratory failure, which prolonged the postoperative period.

Objectives: Failure to rescue (FTR) is defined by the number of deaths among patients experiencing major complications after surgery. In this report we analyze FTR and apply a cumulative sum control chart (CUSUM) methodology for monitoring performance in a large series of operated lung carcinoma patients.

Methods: Prospectively stored records of cases undergoing anatomical lung resection in one center were reviewed.

Thoracic customized modular titanium-printed prosthesis.

AME Case Rep

September 2019

Thoracic Surgery Department, Salamanca University Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, University of Salamanca, Salamanca, Spain.

Tridimensional custom-made titanium-printed prosthesis have gained certain relevance as an alternative for chest wall reconstruction although different limitations such as uncomfortable intraoperative placement, long manufacturing time or high costs hinder its use when compared to other standard devices. Trying to overcome these problems, we developed a new model of customized modular titanium-printed prosthesis (CM-TPP) for chest wall reconstruction after breast metastasis resection that seems to offer some advantages over other custom-made reconstructive devices.

Background And Objective: Being labeled as allergic to penicillin (unverified ß-lactam allergy) can result in patients receiving broader-spectrum antibiotics than necessary that may be more toxic, less effective, and/or more expensive than alternative options. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the real costs of evaluating ß-lactam allergy.

Methods: We performed a prospective real-life observational study designed to evaluate all adult patients who consulted for suspected ß-lactam allergy over a 1-year period.

Background: Studies of spinal anesthesia in children are limited to a reduced group of high-risk patients and it remains relatively underused compared with general anesthesia in this age group in most institutions. In our experience, spinal anesthesia appears to be a good alternative to general anesthesia during pyloromyotomy in neonates and infants.

Aims: The purpose of this study was to retrospectively evaluate respiratory morbidity of spinal anesthesia compared to general anesthesia in infants undergoing pyloromyotomy.
