Manual therapy for the management of pain and limited range of motion in subjects with signs and symptoms of temporomandibular disorder: a systematic review of randomised controlled trials.

There is a lack of knowledge about the effectiveness of manual therapy (MT) on subjects with temporomandibular disorders (TMD). The aim of this systematic review is to synthetise evidence regarding the isolated effect of MT in improving maximum mouth opening (MMO) and pain in subjects with signs and symptoms of TMD. MEDLINE(®) , Cochrane, Web of Science, SciELO and EMBASE(™) electronic databases were consulted, searching for randomised controlled trials applying MT for TMD compared to other intervention, no intervention or placebo.

Thoracic Revised Cardiac Risk Index Is Associated With Prognosis After Resection for Stage I Lung Cancer.

Background: The objective of this investigation is to evaluate whether the Thoracic Revised Cardiac Risk Index (ThRCRI) is an independent prognostic factor after lung resection for early-stage lung cancer.

Methods: Observational analysis performed on 1,370 patients (from 2000 to 2011) undergoing anatomic lung resection for pathologic stage I non-small cell lung cancer in three thoracic surgery units. Survival was calculated by the Kaplan-Meier method.

Chronic cutaneous lichenoid graft-versus-host disease at the area of herpes zoster infection and at a vaccination site.

Cutaneous graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) is a frequent complication of allogeneic bone marrow transplant and haematopoietic cell transplantation, but it is rarely presented as a Wolf's isotopic response. We report a patient who developed chronic lichenoid GVHD following the dermatomes previously affected by varicella zoster virus (VZV) infection. Nineteen months later, the same patient suffered from reactivation of GVHD at the injection site of an influenza vaccination.

Comparison of the effects of quetiapine extended-release and quetiapine immediate-release on cognitive performance, sedation and patient satisfaction in patients with schizophrenia: a randomised, double-blind, crossover study (eXtRa).

Objectives: To assess daytime cognitive performance, sedation and treatment satisfaction in patients with schizophrenia receiving quetiapine extended release (XR) versus quetiapine immediate release (IR).

Methods: Phase IV prospective, double-blind, crossover study (NCT01213836). Patients (N=66) with stable schizophrenia, treated with XR or IR before study start, were randomised (1:1) to treatment with XR followed by IR, or IR followed by XR, at the dose received before enrolment (400-750mg).

Usefulness of conventional pleural drainage systems to predict the occurrence of prolonged air leak after anatomical pulmonary resection.

Objectives: One of the reported advantages of digital pleural drainage system is the possibility of predicting the occurrence of prolonged air leak (PAL) based on the recorded pleural pressures and/or air flow through chest tubes. Nevertheless, this fact has never been well supported. The objective of this investigation is to evaluate if the occurrence of PAL can accurately be predicted using clinical data and air leak measurements 24 h after lung resection on conventional pleural drainage system (CPDS).

Enhancement of conventional TBNA outcome after EBUS Training.

Background: Conventional transbronchial needle aspiration (C-TBNA) is a well-established technique for the diagnosis and staging of bronchogenic carcinoma. Because of the implementation of the endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA), the C-TBNA is being used less frequently. Despite its proven diagnostic utility some of the pulmonary fellowship programs have chosen to eliminate training for C-TBNA from their curriculum.

Polyphenol-rich strawberry extract protects human dermal fibroblasts against hydrogen peroxide oxidative damage and improves mitochondrial functionality.

Strawberry bioactive compounds are widely known to be powerful antioxidants. In this study, the antioxidant and anti-aging activities of a polyphenol-rich strawberry extract were evaluated using human dermal fibroblasts exposed to H2O2. Firstly, the phenol and flavonoid contents of strawberry extract were studied, as well as the antioxidant capacity.

Surgical management of advanced non-small cell lung cancer.

More than 75% of the cases of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are diagnosed in advanced stages (IIIA-IV). Although in these patients the role of surgery is unclear, complete tumor resection can be achieved in selected cases, with good long-term survival. In this review, current indications for surgery in advanced NSCLC are discussed.

Intraoperative ultrasound in conservative surgery for non-palpable breast cancer after neoadjuvant chemotherapy.

Aims: A complete clinical response after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) in breast cancer patients hinders the localization of the residual lesion and the removal of a minimum amount of breast tissue. The aim of the present work is to report our single-centre experience with intraoperative ultrasound-guided (IOUS) excision performed by surgeons in these patients.

Patients And Methods: From January 2008 to December 2012, IOUS excisions were performed on 58 patients with a previous intralesional ultrasound-detectable metallic marker and non-palpable breast cancer after NACT.

Implications of cytokine genes in allergic asthma.

Asthma is a complex disease involving numerous mediator molecules and effector cells, in combination with a range of environmental determining factors. Cytokines play a key role in the physiopathological mechanisms of asthma; the study of the structure, regulation and variations of the genes that encode for these molecules is therefore crucial. Cytokines have extremely diverse roles, and exert effects both as activators and inhibitors of the innate and adaptive immune response.

A clinical review on extreme hypofractionated stereotactic body radiation therapy for localized prostate cancer using nonrobotic linear accelerators.

Seven phase I-II studies fell within the inclusion criteria. Details on the radiotherapy technique, patient selection, fractionation scheme, exclusion criteria, treatment toxicity, quality-of-life, and tumor control were collected. The studies provide encouraging results of acute and late toxicity, with rare grade 3 events, that seem comparable to robotic SBRT.

Strawberry intake increases blood fluid, erythrocyte and mononuclear cell defenses against oxidative challenge.

The health promoting effects of a regular consumption of strawberries deserve attention, and a direct or indirect antioxidant role of strawberry bioactive compounds is among the most probable mechanisms underlying their beneficial properties. In the present study, we evaluated the overall effects of a 2-week daily consumption of strawberries on plasma antioxidant status, membrane lipid susceptibility to ex vivo-induced oxidation, and erythrocyte and mononuclear cell resistance to oxidative damage in apparently healthy volunteers. After strawberry intake, a moderate increase in fasting plasma antioxidant capacity and vitamin C was observed, together with a significant increase in the lag phase preceding plasma lipid oxidation.

Synchronous cerebral and pleural solitary fibrous tumour.

Solitary fibrous tumours of the pleura (SFTPs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms usually originating from the visceral pleura, but they have been reported in many other sites. To the best of our knowledge, this report describes the first known case of synchronous SFTP in the left visceral pleura and brain. The SFTP of the brain was resected via craniotomy, whereas the SFTP of the pleura, widely compressing and displacing the left lower lung lobe, was resected via left thoracotomy.

A seventeen-year epidemiological surveillance study of Borrelia burgdorferi infections in two provinces of northern Spain.

This paper reports a 17-year seroepidemiological surveillance study of Borrelia burgdorferi infection, performed with the aim of improving our knowledge of the epidemiology of this pathogen. Serum samples (1,179) from patients (623, stratified with respect to age, sex, season, area of residence and occupation) bitten by ticks in two regions of northern Spain were IFA-tested for B. burgdorferi antibodies.

Effect of implementing the European guidelines for functional evaluation before lung resection on cardiorespiratory morbidity and 30-day mortality in lung cancer patients: a case-control study on a matched series of patients.

Objectives: We hypothesized that postoperative cardiorespiratory morbidity and/or 30-day death rates decreased after implementing the new European ERS/ESTS guidelines for functional evaluation before lung resection and tested the hypothesis by means of a case-control study.

Methods: The analysis included a series of 916 consecutive patients who underwent an anatomical pulmonary resection for non-small-cell lung cancer in our centre. Patients were divided into cases (September 2009-August 2012) and controls (December 2002-August 2009).

The risk of bilobectomy compared with lobectomy: a retrospective analysis of a series of matched cases and controls.

Objectives: Bilobectomy is considered to be a risky procedure due to space mismatch between the pleural space and the remnant lung. The objective of this study was to evaluate if postoperative complications related or not to size mismatch are more frequent after bilobectomy compared with right lobectomy cases.

Methods: Retrospective case-control study on a series of matched non-small-cell lung cancer patients.

Initial experience with stereotactic body radiation therapy for localized prostate cancer using helical tomotherapy.

Purpose: Single-institution single-arm prospective study. Endpoint: To assess whether there are more than 5 % of men having grade 3 GU or any grade 3 GI acute toxicity during stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) for prostate cancer using helical tomotherapy.

Methods: Since May 2012, 17 prostate cancer patients were treated with helical tomotherapy.

Quality of life in patients with chronic venous disease: influence of the socio-demographical and clinical factors.

Aim: Chronic venous disease (CVD) is a well-defined and known disorder which impact on related-health quality of life (QoL). However, individuals factors which determinate quality of life on CVD are not well defined. The purposes of this study were to describe the QoL in patients with CVD and examine socio-demographical and clinical factors which influence QoL METHODS: One thousand five hundred sixty patients with CVD were evaluated.
