Demographic, Etiological, and Clinical Characteristics of Eyelid Lacerations.

Objectives: To evaluate the demographic, etiological, and accompanying clinical factors in eyelid lacerations (EL).

Materials And Methods: The records of patients who presented to our clinic between 2018 and 2022 with eyelid trauma were retrospectively reviewed. Age, gender, cause of injury, clinical findings, accompanying ocular findings, and additional complications were analyzed.

Investigation of the Albumin/Globulin Ratio as a Biomarker in Restless Legs Syndrome.

Background Measurement of serum/plasma levels of inflammatory factors in restless legs syndrome (RLS) has been the subject of a few studies, as various inflammatory diseases may demonstrate an association with RLS. The albumin/globulin ratio (AGR) is a parameter that considers two proteins that are indicators of inflammation and has been shown to increase in some inflammatory diseases. No study has evaluated the relationship between RLS and AGR yet.

Prospective Cohort Study of Incidence and Risk Factors for Catheter-associated Urinary Tract Infections in 212 Intensive Care Units of Nine Middle Eastern Countries.

Objectives: To identify urinary catheter (UC)-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTI) incidence and risk factors (RF) in nine Middle Eastern countries.

Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study between 1 January 2014 and 2 December 2022 in 212 intensive care units (ICUs) of 67 hospitals in 38 cities in nine Middle Eastern countries (Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and the UAE). To estimate CAUTI incidence, we used the number of UC days as denominator and the number of CAUTIs as numerator.

Perioperative use of fascial plane blocks; anesthesiology and reanimation physicians' approach in Türkiye: A national survey study.

Objectives: Our aim was to assess the approach of Turkish Anesthesiology and Reanimation Specialists to the perioperative use of truncal/fascial plane blocks (FPB) in various surgeries. A survey was designed to evaluate the perioperative management of FPBs.

Methods: Anesthesiology and Reanimation specialists and residents in various hospitals in Türkiye were surveyed on a voluntary basis.

Background: Central line (CL)-associated bloodstream infections (CLABSIs) occurring in the intensive care unit (ICU) are common and associated with a high burden.

Methods: We implemented a multidimensional approach, incorporating an 11-element bundle, education, surveillance of CLABSI rates and clinical outcomes, monitoring compliance with bundle components, feedback of CLABSI rates and clinical outcomes, and performance feedback in 316 ICUs across 30 low- and middle-income countries. Our dependent variables were CLABSI per 1,000-CL-days and in-ICU all-cause mortality rates.

Background: Ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) occurring in the intensive care unit (ICU) are common, costly, and potentially lethal.

Methods: We implemented a multidimensional approach and an 8-component bundle in 374 ICUs across 35 low and middle-income countries (LMICs) from Latin-America, Asia, Eastern-Europe, and the Middle-East, to reduce VAP rates in ICUs. The VAP rate per 1000 mechanical ventilator (MV)-days was measured at baseline and during intervention at the 2nd month, 3rd month, 4-15 month, 16-27 month, and 28-39 month periods.

Objective: Surgical site infections (SSI) are incomparably troublesome and complicated, and some of them require an open abdomen (OA) procedure. While deciding the timing of abdominal closure, wound area calculation method and laboratory parameters can be used to guide the timing of abdominal closure after OA procedures.

Introduction: After lens extraction, if the capsular bag insufficiency occurs, there are different IOL implantation techniques. IOL implantation in the posterior chamber is safer in eyes with low endothelial cell count, peripheral anterior synechiae, shallow anterior chamber, and glaucoma. Clinical significance and prognostic value of serum autoantibody tests in multiple sclerosis.

Introduction: It is known that multiple sclerosis (MS) often coexists with other autoimmune diseases. Hence, autoantibody (auto-Ab) tests may prove useful in the differential diagnosis of MS. The objectives of this study were to: (a) investigate the prevalence of auto-Ab positivity at the beginning of the MS diagnostic process; (b) assess whether Auto-Ab+ and Auto-Ab- patients differ in baseline clinical, laboratory, and radiological parameters; and (c) investigate the prognostic value during a two-year follow-up period.

Clinical Value of Inflammatory Biomarkers in Determining Severity of COVID-19.

: COVID-19 infection can occur as a mild, moderate, or severe illness. How patients will be more serious has not been fully revealed so far. To investigate the role of systemic inflammation index (SII), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), mean platelet volume (MPV), mean platelet volume to platelet ratio (MPR), and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte and platelet ratio (NLPR) in determining the severity of COVID-19 patients.

Comparison of Ultrasound-Guided Popliteal Sciatic Block Properties in Diabetic and Nondiabetic Patients.

Background: We aim to share our popliteal sciatic nerve block (PSB) experience, which we applied to diabetic and nondiabetic patients in the operating room of our hospital.

Methods: The patients who underwent PSB for foot and ankle surgery between October 1, 2021, and December 31, 2021, in Sakarya University Training and Research Hospital were evaluated retrospectively. All nerve blocks were administered by a single anesthesiologist.

Prognostic significance of common hepatic artery lymph node metastasis in gastric cancer.

Purpose: The number of lymph nodes is used to determine the prognosis in patients with gastric cancer undergoing D2 lymph node dissection. However, a group of extraperigastric lymph nodes, including lymph node 8a, are also considered to be effective in prognosis. In our clinical experience, in most patients during D2 lymph node dissection, the lymph nodes are removed en-bloc with the specimen and are not marked separately.

Investigation of the relationship between serum irisin level in the idiopathic restless legs syndrome: Could be a marker independent of physical activity?

Introduction: Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common but underdiagnosed neurological syndrome. It is characterized by the feeling of discomfort and desire to move, especially in the lower extremities, which often occurs at night, and the cure or relief of symptoms with movement. Irisin is a hormonelike polypeptide that was first identified in 2012, weighs 22 kDa, consists of 163 amino acids, and is mainly synthesized in muscle.

Multinational prospective study of incidence and risk factors for central-line-associated bloodstream infections in 728 intensive care units of 41 Asian, African, Eastern European, Latin American, and Middle Eastern countries over 24 years.

Objective: To identify central-line (CL)-associated bloodstream infection (CLABSI) incidence and risk factors in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Design: From July 1, 1998, to February 12, 2022, we conducted a multinational multicenter prospective cohort study using online standardized surveillance system and unified forms.

Setting: The study included 728 ICUs of 286 hospitals in 147 cities in 41 African, Asian, Eastern European, Latin American, and Middle Eastern countries.

The protective effects of hesperidin pretreatment on kidney and remote organs against renal ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Objective: As an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent, Hesperidin was investigated to prove whether it prevents damage to the kidney and lung tissues of rats undergoing renal ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Materials And Methods: Four groups of rats were set, including eight subjects each as Group 1 (control), Group 2-RIR (renal ischemia reperfusion), Groups 3 and 4 as pretreatment groups (50 HES, 100 HES).

Results: According to our results, Hesperidin pretreatment improved the biochemical and histopathological parameters in kidney and lung tissues of rats with ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Correlates of Zonulin and Claudin-5, markers of intestinal and brain endothelial permeability, in Parkinson's Disease: A pilot study.

Introduction: Idiopathic Parkinson's Disease is a chronic, progressive, neurodegenerative disease that affects the substantia nigra pars compacta and dopaminergic neurons in the brain stem. Since zonulin and claudin-5 are involved in intestinal and brain endothelial permeability and it is hypothesized that the brain-gut axis is relevant in IPD, the aim of our study is to evaluate whether the relationship between Zonulin and Claudin-5 levels and Parkinson's Disease patients.

Methods: A total of 139 patients, including 34 mild, 33 moderate, 39 severe stage patients and 33 healthy controls were included.

Peripheral Expression of Is Increased and Is Correlated with Autism Spectrum Disorder Severity in a Sample of Turkish Children.

Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the peripheral expression of (Adenosine A2A receptor gene) in young subjects with autism spectrum disorder compared with healthy controls and its relationship with clinical characteristics.

Method: This study included 93 children and adolescents with a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder as the study group and 105 healthy age- and gender-matched controls. Blood samples were obtained from all participants, and a real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction was performed.

Relationship between platelet indices and red cell distribution width and short-term mortality in traumatic brain injury with 30-day mortality.

Objective: This study aimed at investigating whether there is a relationship between 7- or 30-day mortality and mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, platelet count-to-total lymphocyte count ratio, or red cell distribution width in patients with traumatic brain injury.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed intensive care unit patients with traumatic brain injury. We recorded patients' ages; genders; diagnoses; Glasgow Coma Scale scores; length of intensive care unit stay (in days); mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width, platelet count-to-total lymphocyte count ratio, and red cell distribution width values upon hospital admission; and health on the 7th and 30th days of their stays.

The combined use of carbon nanotubes with synthetic ceramics enhances posterolateral fusion: an experimental study in a rat spinal fusion model.

Purpose: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effectiveness of carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/ HA-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) composite in a posterolateral spinal fusion model.

Methods: At first, CNTs and CNTs/HA-TCP composites were prepared. Twenty adult male Sprague Dawley rats were randomized into four groups with five rats in each group.

Double peptic ulcer perforation in a Covid-19 patient, extremely rare entity.

Peptic ulcer perforation is one of the leading causes of acute abdomen, presenting with acute abdominal pain and severe distress for the patient. In one-third of patients, the presentation is less dramatic, resulting in significant delays in diagnosis. Herein, we present a very rarest case operated on for diffuse purulent peritonitis with double perforation of the stomach in a COVID-19-positive patient, which had a depressing outcome.
