Background: Extra-capillary hypercellularity is a common finding in crescentic glomerulonephritis (GN) and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). In diabetic nephropathy (DN), extra-capillary hypercellularity is often observed as a finding of complications such as IgA nephropathy or microscopic polyangiitis superimposed on DN. However, in rare cases, epithelial cell proliferation may accompany DN.

A close causal relationship has been suggested to exist between cancer and periodontitis. We hypothesized that the immune surveillance system is impaired in patients with periodontitis, which contributes to cancer development and growth. Therefore, the present study investigated the relationship between immune surveillance mechanisms and periodontitis in cancer patients.

Objectives: We previously reported, based on a multicenter randomized-control study, that the efficacy of intra-articular injections of hyaluronic acid (IA-HA) was not inferior to that of oral non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). However, the molecular effects on the pathophysiology of knee OA remain unclear. C-terminal telopeptides of type II collagen (CTX-II) is reported to primarily originate from the interface between articular cartilage and subchondral bone, which is a site of potential remodeling in OA.

Objectives: Because most severely ill patients with COVID-19 in our hospital showed zinc deficiency, we aimed to examine the relationship between the patient's serum zinc level and severe cases of COVID-19.

Methods: Serum zinc <70 μg/dL was defined as the criterion for hypozincemia, and patients continuously with serum zinc <70 μg/dL were classified in the hypozincemia cohort. To evaluate whether hypozincemia could be a predictive factor for a critical illness of COVID-19, we performed a multivariate analysis by employing logistic regression analysis.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares two treatment approaches for advanced ovarian, tubal, and peritoneal cancers: primary debulking surgery (PDS) and neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT), finding that NACT may not be as effective as PDS for overall survival (OS).
  • A total of 301 patients were randomized, with median OS of 49.0 months for PDS and 44.3 months for NACT, illustrating that while NACT is less invasive, it did not confirm noninferiority compared to PDS.
  • Factors like tumor resection success and patient characteristics influenced outcomes; thus, while NACT may be effective, further examination is needed to determine if it can broadly replace PDS in treatment

Sakai City Medical Center, Critical Care Medical Center, Department of Acute Care Surgery, 1-1-1 Ebaraji-cho, Nishi-ku, Sakai City, Osaka, 593-8304, Japan. Electronic address:

Introduction: Pelvic fractures can occur in minor injuries, such as falls, in the elderly. Extensive adhesion of preperitoneal space is common after pelvic fracture surgery; hence, surgical interventions for inguinal hernia may be challenging. We treated a case of inguinal hernia after pelvic fracture surgery, using novel laparoscopic methods: iliopubic tract repair (IPTR) and modified intraperitoneal onlay mesh (mIPOM) approach.

We conducted a multicenter, randomized, patient- and assessor-blinded, sham-controlled trial to investigate the efficacy of repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) of the primary motor cortex (M1) in patients with neuropathic pain (NP). Patients were randomly assigned to receive 5 daily sessions of active or sham rTMS of M1 corresponding to the part of the body experiencing the worst pain (500 pulses per session at 5 Hz). Responders were invited to enroll in an open-label continuous trial involving 4 weekly sessions of active rTMS.

Objectives: Abnormal swallowing or dysphagia is a potentially fatal symptom in Parkinson's disease (PD) and is characterized by frequent silent aspiration, which is an unrecognized risk for aspiration pneumonia. While the effects of oral levodopa on swallowing functions remain controversial, several small-scale studies have reported that rotigotine transdermal patch seems effective. The different effects between levodopa and rotigotine may be attributed to continuous dopaminergic stimulation (CDS), however, the absence of direct comparative evidence precludes conclusion.

Background: Anatomic variants of the biliary tree present challenges to surgical management during laparoscopic cholecystectomy and affect perioperative outcomes. An aberrant right hepatic duct connecting into the cystic duct is a practically important variation because of the susceptibility to serious postoperative refractory bile leakage. We report a successful case of laparoscopic cholecystectomy in the aberrant right hepatic duct of a patient diagnosed with chronic cystitis.
