Evaluation of odor recognition threshold measurement methods in T&T olfactometry: A survey study.

Objective: The odor recognition thresholds in T&T olfactometry are measured by either the examiner's judgment of the patients' odor expression for each standard odor or by the patient's choice of the correct response from an olfactory term table. This study aimed to clarify the correct odor expressions and use of the olfactory term table.

Methods: A questionnaire was administered to otolaryngologists or medical staff in charge of testing at facilities where T&T olfactometry is performed.

An open competition involving thousands of competitors failed to construct useful abstract classifiers for new diagnostic test accuracy systematic reviews.

There are currently no abstract classifiers, which can be used for new diagnostic test accuracy (DTA) systematic reviews to select primary DTA study abstracts from database searches. Our goal was to develop machine-learning-based abstract classifiers for new DTA systematic reviews through an open competition. We prepared a dataset of abstracts obtained through database searches from 11 reviews in different clinical areas.

Outcomes of surgical resection for pulmonary metastasis from pancreatic cancer.

Purpose: As the number of long-term survivors of pancreatic cancer is expected to increase thanks to recent advances in multidisciplinary treatment and earlier diagnoses of pancreatic cancer, we are likely to encounter more cases of postoperative pulmonary nodules. We analyzed the clinical course and prognosis of resection of pulmonary metastases from pancreatic cancer to clarify the prognostic implication of pulmonary metastasectomy for pancreatic cancer.

Method: We retrospectively analyzed 35 patients who underwent resection of lung metastases after pancreatic cancer surgery.

Fulminant type 1 diabetes is a subtype of type 1 diabetes in which beta cells are destroyed within days or a few weeks. The first criterion indicates a rise in blood glucose levels shown in the patient's history. The second suggests that the increase occurs suddenly within a very short period, as shown by the laboratory findings of the discrepancy between the glycated hemoglobin concentration and plasma glucose level.

High Infiltration of CD163-Positive Macrophages in Intratumor Compartment Predicts Poor Prognosis in Patients With Upper Urinary Tract Urothelial Carcinoma and Radical Nephroureterectomy.

Objectives: To investigate the prognostic value of CD68- and CD163-positive macrophages in patients with upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC).

Patients And Methods: This retrospective study enrolled 50 patients (34 men and 16 women) with UTUC who received radical nephroureterectomy (RNU). We evaluated the expression of CD68 and CD163 in the intratumor compartment by immunohistochemistry.

Diabetic nephropathy with marked extra-capillary cell proliferation: a case report.

Background: Extra-capillary hypercellularity is a common finding in crescentic glomerulonephritis (GN) and focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). In diabetic nephropathy (DN), extra-capillary hypercellularity is often observed as a finding of complications such as IgA nephropathy or microscopic polyangiitis superimposed on DN. However, in rare cases, epithelial cell proliferation may accompany DN.

Incidence and risk factors for venous thromboembolism in the Cancer-VTE Registry stomach cancer subcohort.

Background: The Cancer-VTE Registry was a large-scale, multicenter, prospective registry designed to investigate real-world data on venous thromboembolism (VTE) incidence and risk factors in adult Japanese patients with solid tumors. This pre-specified subgroup analysis aimed to estimate the incidence of VTE, including VTE types other than symptomatic VTE, and identify risk factors of VTE in stomach cancer from the Cancer-VTE Registry.

Methods: Stage II-IV stomach cancer patients who planned to initiate cancer therapy and underwent VTE screening within 2 months before registration were enrolled.

Syphilis is surging in Japan and worldwide among both homosexual and heterosexual individuals. Diagnosis can be challenging because syphilis is "the great imitator" and clinical manifestations are highly variable. Oral manifestations of syphilis are usually seen in the second stage and the primary syphilis in the oral cavity is rare.

The effect of dapagliflozin on uric acid excretion and serum uric acid level in advanced CKD.

Sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) exhibit renoprotective effect in patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and reduce serum uric acid (UA) in patients with diabetes mellitus. However, it is not clarified whether SGLT2i reduce serum UA levels in patients with advanced CKD. This study aimed to investigate the impact of SGLT2i on change in serum UA levels in patients with advanced CKD.

Hyperdry Human Amniotic Membrane as a Protective Dressing for Open Wounds With Exposed Bowel in Mice.

Introduction: An enteroatmospheric fistula forms when the exposed bowel is perforated with chronic enteric fistula formation. Currently, there is no established preventative method for this condition. Hyperdry (HD) amniotic membrane (AM) can promote early granulation tissue formation on the exposed viscera and is suitable for dressing intractable wounds as it possesses anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and immunomodulatory properties.

Dynamic Changes in Peripheral Systemic Immunity Markers During Chemotherapy in HER2-negative Advanced Breast Cancer.

Background/aim: The immune system has a pivotal role in modulating the response to chemotherapy in breast cancer (BC). However, the immune status during chemotherapy remains unclear. We evaluated the sequential changes in peripheral systemic immunity markers in BC patients treated with various chemotherapeutic agents.

[Antibody production capacity after COVID-19 vaccination in immune-mediated neuromuscular diseases under immunotherapy].

The post-vaccination antibody response in patients with immune-mediated neuromuscular diseases under immuno-suppressive therapy has not been sufficiently verified. The Japanese Society of Neurology has stated that coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination should be given priority in patients with immunotherapy-associated neuromuscular diseases; however, data on antibody production to a novel mRNA vaccine are scarce in these patients. In this study, we aimed to measure residual antibody titers after the second dose and produced antibodies after the third dose of SARS-CoV-2 mRNA vaccine in 25 patients with neuromuscular diseases under immuno-suppressive therapy (disease group).

Applicability of on-site disinfection of personal protective equipment by ozone gas.

On-site disinfection techniques are beneficial during a pandemic when there is a marked shortage of personal protective equipment (PPE), as experienced during the coronavirus disease 2019 outbreak. Ozone gas has been considered an alternative on-site disinfectant during a pandemic because it has antimicrobial activities, can be produced from air by electricity without the need for storage, and can be easily deactivated after use. However, ozone gas might become distributed at the lower layer because it has a larger molecular weight than air.

[Successful Treatment with TACE and RFA for a Hepatocellular Carcinoma Case with Lung Metastasis].

We report a hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)case with lung metastasis that was successfully treated with transarterial chemoembolization(TACE)and percutaneous radiofrequency ablation(RFA). A man in his 60s took right robe liver resection for HCC after TACE for its rupture. Lung metastasis occurred at S1+2 and S6 in the left lung, and an adverse event interrupted standard molecular target therapies.

[Case of Robot-Assisted Low Anterior Resection with Total Cystectomy for Rectal Cancer Invading the Urinary Bladder/Prostate in Collaboration with Urologists].

We present a case of a 72-year-old man diagnosed with rectal cancer invading the urinary bladder/prostate. Preoperative chemoradiotherapy substantially reduced the tumor size. In collaboration with urologists, robot-assisted low anterior resection with total cystectomy was performed using the da Vinci Xi system.

[A Case Report of Stage Ⅳb Thoracic Esophageal Cancer Responding to Multidisciplinary Treatment].

A 68-year-old man was referred to our hospital because of back pain during swallowing. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy revealed a lower esophageal type 3 tumor. The patient was diagnosed with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma by the biopsy specimen.

Contamination of Blood Cultures From Arterial Catheters and Peripheral Venipuncture in Critically Ill Patients: A Prospective Multicenter Diagnostic Study.

Background: Collecting blood cultures from indwelling arterial catheters is an attractive option in critically ill adult patients when peripheral venipuncture is difficult. However, whether the contamination proportion of blood cultures from arterial catheters is acceptable compared with that from venipuncture is inconclusive.

Research Question: Is contamination of blood cultures from arterial catheters noninferior to that from venipuncture in critically ill adult patients with suspected bloodstream infection?

Study Design And Methods: In this multicenter prospective diagnostic study conducted at five hospitals, we enrolled episodes of paired blood culture collection, each set consisting of blood drawn from an arterial catheter and another by venipuncture, were obtained from critically ill adult patients with cilinical indication.

Novel loci for hyperglycemia identified by QTL mapping of longitudinal phenotypes and congenic analysis.

We previously reported that four hyperglycemia loci are located on three chromosomes in the Nagoya-Shibata-Yasuda (NSY) mouse model, commonly used to study type 2 diabetes. However, we did not search for hyperglycemia loci across all chromosomes. In this study, we performed quantitative trait loci (QTLs) mapping of longitudinal phenotypes from crosses between NSY (hyperglycemic) and C3H (normoglycemic) mice.

Bivalent GAD autoantibody ELISA improves clinical utility and risk prediction for adult autoimmune diabetes.

Aim/introduction: To investigate the differences in the clinical significance and glutamic acid decarboxylase autoantibody (GADA) affinity between RIA (RIA-GADA) and ELISA (ELISA-GADA) in patients with type 1 diabetes.

Methods: A total of 415 patients with type 1 diabetes were enrolled, including 199 acute-onset type 1 diabetes, 168 slowly progressive type 1 diabetes (SPIDDM), and 48 fulminant type 1 diabetes. GADA affinity was measured by a competitive binding experiment using unlabeled recombinant human GAD65 protein, and the diagnostic performance of both assays and the relationship between GADA affinity and the decline of fasting C-peptide (F-CPR) were examined.

Single-Cell Analysis of Circulating Tumor Cells from Patients with Colorectal Cancer Captured with a Dielectrophoresis-Based Micropore System.

This study aimed to analyze circulating tumor cells (CTCs) from patients with colorectal cancer (CRC). We designed a dielectrophoresis-based micropore system and tested its cell capture with HT29 colon cancer cells. Then, blood samples were drawn from 24 patients with stages II-IV CRC.
