In Japan, the use of mothproofing agents [dieldrin and 4,6-dichloro-7-(2,4,5-trichlorophenoxy)-2-trifluoromethylbenzimidazole; DTTB] in textiles is regulated by the Act on the Control of Household Products Containing Harmful Substances. Since official analytical methods for these agents have been in place for approximately 40 years, we developed an improved method in a previous study. In the present study, we validated this method.

In Japan, the use of methanol, trichloroethylene, and tetrachloroethylene in aerosol household products is banned under the Act on the Control of Household Products Containing Harmful Substances. As the official analytical methods for testing for these substances have not been revised for over 35 years, several issues have been pointed out. Thus, we developed a new method to revise the official method in our previous study.

Human-to-human transmission of PA I38 mutant influenza A(H3N2) viruses with reduced baloxavir susceptibility has been reported in Japan. In December 2019, we detected a PA E23K mutant A(H1N1)pdm09 virus from a child without baloxavir treatment. The PA E23K mutant virus exhibited reduced baloxavir susceptibility but remained susceptible to neuraminidase inhibitors.

Background: Work toward rubella elimination has accelerated globally. A reliable laboratory confirmation of rubella-suspected cases is required for effective surveillance in the rubella-elimination phase. The use of adequate specimens is a key to improving the quality of this surveillance.

Virus-like particles (VLPs) provide a well-established vaccine platform; however, the immunogenic properties acquired by VLP structure remain poorly understood. In this study, we showed that systemic vaccination with norovirus VLP recalls human IgA responses at higher magnitudes than IgG responses under a humanized mouse model that was established by introducing human PBMCs in severely immunodeficient mice. The recall responses elicited by VLP vaccines depended on VLP structure and the disruption of VLP attenuated recall responses, with a more profound reduction being observed in IgA responses.

A total of 300 patients with nucleic acid test-confirmed rubella, mostly adults, were investigated to determine the clinical value of a rubella-specific IgM test using an EIA kit. IgM titers increased after rash onset, the median IgM titer being significantly higher 3 days post-onset than on previous days (P < 0.0001).

We carried out a collaborative study in six laboratories to confirm the universality of the enhancing effect of co-existing reference pesticides on the GC-MS peak response to a target pesticide (malathion, procymidone, or flucythrinate). First, we confirmed the response enhancement of the target pesticides with increasing numbers of co-existing reference pesticides in solution. Then, using diluted green soybean matrix, we analyzed the target pesticides with two types of matrix-matched calibration, containing the target pesticides or 166 other pesticides.

Norovirus GII.4 is a major cause of global outbreaks of viral gastroenteritis in humans, and has evolved by antigenic changes under the constantly changing human herd immunity. Major shift in the pandemic GII.

A serodiagnostic kit that measures the serum levels of IgA antibodies against the glycopeptidolipid (GPL) core is commercially available and has good diagnostic accuracy for MAC-PD. However, the significance of measurement of GPL core IgA antibody levels in monitoring for chemotherapy response in patients with MAC-PD was not well investigated.

KEA3 is a thylakoid membrane localized K /H antiporter that regulates photosynthesis by modulating two components of proton motive force (pmf), the proton gradient (∆pH) and the electric potential (∆ψ). We identified a mutant allele of KEA3, disturbed proton gradient regulation (dpgr) based on its reduced non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) in artificial (CO -free with low O ) air. This phenotype was enhanced in the mutant backgrounds of PSI cyclic electron transport (pgr5 and crr2-1).

Multiplex reverse transcription (RT)-polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assays involving fluorescent dye-labeled primers were modified to detect 10 types of gastroenteritis viruses by adding two further assays to a previously developed assay. Then, these assays were applied to clinical samples, which were collected between January 2006 and December 2013. All 10 types of viruses were effectively detected in the multiplex RT-PCR-based assays.

The duration of viral shedding in the patients from two outbreaks and four sporadic cases of norovirus (NoV) infections was investigated. The longest period of viral shedding into feces was for 173 days in an inpatient from one case of outbreak. The VP1 sequence from two long-term viral shedding cases in the outbreak revealed four synonymous and one non-synonymous mutations in one inpatient at 26 days from the onset of illness, and nine synonymous and two non-synonymous mutations and a deletion, 10 synonymous mutations and a deletion in other inpatient at 29 days and 54 days from the onset of illness, respectively.

Setting: A commercial serodiagnostic kit for diagnosing pulmonary disease due to Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC-PD) was developed and launched in Japan in 2011.
Objective: To evaluate the performance of this kit in routine clinical settings.
Methods: In this retrospective single-centre study, data on serum levels of anti-glycopeptidolipid (GPL) core IgA antibody (U/ml) measured using the kit were analysed in patients diagnosed with MAC-PD according to American Thoracic Society criteria, in those with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) or pulmonary M.

Noroviruses (NoVs) commonly cause acute gastroenteritis outbreaks. Broadly reactive diagnostic assays are essential for rapid detection of NoV infections. We previously generated a panel of broadly reactive monoclonal antibodies (MAbs).

Noroviruses are responsible for most acute nonbacterial epidemic outbreaks of gastroenteritis worldwide. To develop cross-reactive monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) for rapid identification of genogroup I and II (GI and GII) noroviruses (NoVs) in field specimens, mice were immunized with baculovirus-expressed recombinant virus-like particles (VLPs) corresponding to NoVs. Nine MAbs against the capsid protein were identified that detected both GI and GII NoV VLPs.

The gold standard in diagnosis of mycobacterial diseases remains clinical examination, combined with direct microscopic examination of sputum and culture of bacteria. Culture of slowly growing mycobacteria, including Mycobacterium tuberculosis and NTM (such as M.

Thiabendazole (TBZ), a pesticide with antifungal activity, was detected in toasted and seasoned laver which had been reported as tasting unpleasant by consumers in March 2008. From a survey of the manufacturing process, it was concluded that the TBZ contamination had originated from a sponge-roller which was used to paste seasoned liquid onto the toasted laver. At that time it was found that TBZ is widely used to prevent fungal contamination of sponge-rollers.

On October 17, 2006, the Sakai City Public Health Center received a report of acute gastroenteritis among 4 members from the same company who had eaten raw meat dish called "Yukke: Korean-style beef tartar" and raw liver at a rotisserie in Sakai City on October 7. Based on information from interviews, the median incubation period was 5.5 (range, 5-7 days), and the median length of illness was 7 days (range, 4-10 days).

Monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) are important for in-depth antigenic characterization and diagnosis of infections with human caliciviruses that cause almost all outbreaks of nonbacterial gastroenteritis. We compared different routes of immunization with nonreplicating virus-like particles (VLPs) from recombinant Norwalk virus (rNV) and recombinant Mexico virus (rMX) administered to BALB/c mice to determine the efficiency of hybridoma production. Oral immunization with VLPs without adjuvant resulted in high yields of MAb-secreting hybridomas (90%) to these VLPs of IgG (61%), IgM (29%) and IgA (10%) isotypes.
