Various studies have reported resistance mechanisms and treatment methods after epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR)-tyrosine kinase inhibitor treatment; however, treatment policies have not yet been established, and few cases have reported transformation to pleomorphic carcinoma (PC) as the resistance mechanism. Herein, we report the case of a 66-year-old woman who was diagnosed with Stage 4A lung adenocarcinoma (cT2bN0M1b) through bronchoscopic biopsy. Genetic profiling revealed an EGFR L858R mutation; therefore, osimertinib was administered as the first-line therapy and achieved a partial response.

: To explore how Public Health Nurses (PHNs) in Fukushima perceived their roles and activities as necessary or inadequate from the immediate aftermath through the long-term recovery of the nuclear disaster. : We conducted a qualitative study using a self-administered questionnaire with open-ended questions to capture the perceptions of PHNs across three disaster phases: peacetime; nuclear emergency; and recovery. Responses were analyzed through qualitative content analysis.

We describe the clinical findings in a Japanese patient with unilateral traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) who underwent steroid pulse therapy followed by optic canal decompression surgery. The optic nerve function was assessed longitudinally and quantitatively by Goldmann visual fields (GVFs). This was accomplished by measuring the area of each isopter and scotoma, and the findings were compared with the visual acuities recorded during the course of the resolution of the TON.

Purpose: To report a case of lacrimal drainage pathway disease-associated keratopathy (LDAK) with endophthalmitis.
Observations: An 80-year-old man with diabetic retinopathy and nephropathy was referred to our hospital with endophthalmitis of the left eye. Slit-lamp examination revealed slight eye discharge, peripheral corneal ulcers, diffuse hyperemia of the conjunctiva, iris synechia, and a large amount of fibrin in the anterior chamber of the left eye.

Activins, multifunctional cytokines of the transforming growth factor-beta superfamily, play critical roles in the regulation of growth and differentiation in multiple biological systems. Activin activity is finely regulated by the endogenous antagonist follistatin. Early studies reported that activins are involved in renal organogenesis, but subsequent research demonstrated that activins also play a significant role in kidney regeneration following injury.

Background: Endovascular treatment has become the preferred approach for managing unruptured cerebral aneurysms, with simple and balloon-assisted coil embolization as the standard first-line therapy. However, recanalization after coil embolization remains a major clinical concern. This study aimed to evaluate the predictive factors for recanalization using time-of-flight magnetic resonance (TOF-MR) angiography.

Background: Fluoropyrimidine remains the key agent of adjuvant chemotherapy for stage III colorectal cancer (CRC). Western studies have shown that female sex is a favorable prognostic factor after surgery, but it is also a risk factor for adverse events (AEs) during adjuvant chemotherapy with fluoropyrimidine. However, little is known about whether sex differences in treatment outcomes exist in this setting in the Asian population.

Background: Radiology departments present unique challenges compared to other departments due to exposure to radiation and the specialized nature of the work. Nurses must not only manage typical nursing duties but also adhere to strict safety protocols to minimize radiation exposure. These additional responsibilities can significantly impact their work engagement and overall job satisfaction.

Objectives: Programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1) expression is widely used to predict the effectiveness of PD-(L)1 inhibitors despite its imperfection. Previous studies suggested the utilization of various serum biomarkers; nonetheless, findings are inconclusive because of limited sample sizes or the focus on a single biomarker in many of these studies. This study analyzed multiplex serum biomarkers to explore their predictive ability in a large cohort of patients with advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) treated with a PD-L1 inhibitor in a real-world setting.

Protein kinase adenosine monophosphate-activated non-catalytic subunit gamma 2 (PRKAG2) cardiac syndrome is a rare genetic disorder characterized by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and heart rhythm disturbances caused by mutations in the gene. Reports on PRKAG2 cardiac syndrome associated with refractory chylous effusion are extremely limited. Here, we present a neonatal case involving severe hypertrophic obstructive cardiomyopathy accompanied by chylous ascites and lymphatic malformations.

Purpose: To re-evaluate images recovered from JCOG0911, a randomized phase 2 trial for newly diagnosed glioblastoma (nGBM) conducted by the Japan Clinical Oncology Group (JCOG) Brain Tumor Study Group.
Methods: The correlation between tumor volumes and survival was evaluated, followed by progression-free survival (PFS) analysis by independent central review based on Response Assessment in Neuro-Oncology (RANO) criteria using MRI recovered from 118 nGBM patients enrolled in the JCOG0911 trial. A radiomic analysis was also performed to identify radiomic features predictive of nGBM prognosis.

Background: Iron deficiency is a major contributor to anaemia in chronic kidney diseases. The association of anaemia and iron deficiency with health-related quality of life in Japanese patients with non-dialysis chronic kidney disease has not been examined. In this study, we evaluated anaemia and iron deficiency in patients with chronic kidney disease G3b-5 and examined their associations with health-related quality of life.

Background: In China, transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) and systemic therapy are the primary treatment for patients with advanced hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy (HAIC) is more effective than TACE in treating large HCC (largest diameter ≥7 cm) without macrovascular invasion or extrahepatic spread. Additionally, HAIC in combination with camrelizumab and apatinib has shown promising efficacy and safety in the Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer stage C (BCLC-C) HCC.

Background: Repeat positive results for SARS-CoV-2 by antigen detection test/RT-PCR in recovered COVID-19 patients were not very rare even when omicron variants became dominant, but the clinical features of patients with recurrent COVID-19 during hospitalization are still unclear.
Methods: The clinical characteristics of patients with recurrent COVID-19 during hospitalization were retrospectively investigated from January 2023 to December 2023.
Results: Recurrence of COVID-19 was found in 7 of 275 (2.

A 23-year-old man with a history of untreated atopic dermatitis (AD) presented with a headache and fever. The patient history revealed that he purchased a medical cupping kit on the internet and performed cupping therapy at the flexion of the right elbow joint without disinfecting. Brain computed tomography revealed subarachnoid hemorrhage in the right frontal sulcus, and brain magnetic resonance imaging indicated a small cerebral infarction.

Prevention of recurrent eclamptic seizures requires the administration of magnesium sulfate. However, to our knowledge, there are no reports of cases in which the ionized magnesium concentration has been monitored during magnesium sulfate administration to prevent eclampsia. We describe a case in which monitoring of ionized magnesium permitted the use of magnesium sulfate to prevent a third eclamptic seizure.
