Pregnancy outcomes in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus with or without a history of lupus nephritis.

Background: Pregnancy is an important issue for many women with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This study examined maternal and fetal outcomes among SLE women with or without a history of lupus nephritis (LN).

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed 98 pregnancies in 57 women previously diagnosed with SLE who gave birth at our hospital.

Retrograde endovascular revascularization for chronic total occlusion of the internal carotid artery: a case report.

Endovascular revascularization of a chronically occluded internal carotid artery (ICA) is challenging because the occlusive segment can be long and tortuous. A case is presented of a successful recanalization of a chronically occluded ICA by retrograde passing of a guidewire from the intracranial ICA to the cervical ICA via the posterior communicating artery. This case suggests that a retrograde approach for reopening an occluded artery may be useful during neurovascular interventions, similar to percutaneous coronary interventions.

Effect of adjuvant radiotherapy after subtotal resection for WHO grade I meningioma: a propensity score matching analysis of the Brain Tumor Registry of Japan.

Purpose: This study aimed to improve the understanding of the role of adjuvant radiotherapy (AR) after subtotal resection (STR) of World Health Organization (WHO) grade I meningiomas.

Methods: We retrospectively reviewed the Brain Tumor Registry of Japan database. Among 7341 patients diagnosed with intracranial meningioma during 2001-2008, we identified 406 patients with WHO grade I meningioma treated with STR as initial treatment.

Identification of neutrophil β2-integrin LFA-1 as a potential mechanistic biomarker in ANCA-associated vasculitis via microarray and validation analyses.

Background: Leukocyte activation by anti-neutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (ANCA) and the subsequent leukocyte-endothelium interaction play a key role in the development of endothelial damage in ANCA-associated vasculitis (AAV). In contrast to that of leukocyte activation, the exact role of the leukocyte-endothelium interaction via integrin remains unclear. Here, we performed microarray and validation analyses to explore association between the expression levels of lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 (LFA-1) and the clinical characteristics of patients with AAV.

The evaluation of the gastric tube blood flow by indocyanine green fluorescence angiography during esophagectomy: a multicenter prospective study.

Objective: We determined the anastomotic site during gastric tube reconstruction in esophagectomy according to the "90-to 60-s rule" using indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence angiography. We evaluated its safety and efficacy in a prospective multicenter setting.

Accurately identifying risk factors can help develop strategies to reduce this devastating consequence; however, few multicentre studies have investigated risk factors for SSI following posterior cervical spine surgeries. Between July 2010 and June 2015, we performed an observational cohort study on deep SSI in adult patients who underwent posterior cervical spine surgery at 10 research hospitals.

Chance diagnosis of mixed gonadal dysgenesis in an adult case of malignant gonadal germ cell tumor: a case report.

Background: Mixed gonadal dysgenesis (MGD) is a subtype of the disorders of sex development (DSD) associated with sex chromosome abnormalities characterized by abnormal external genitalia, short stature, and primary amenorrhea. This disease is generally diagnosed from the neonatal stage to early childhood, and by puberty at the latest. Cases that are phenotypically female or those with ambiguous genitalia experience a high risk of gonadal tumor formation.

Criminal victimization of people with epilepsy: Sixteen criminal judgments in Japan between 1990 and 2019.

Criminal behavior by people with epilepsy (PWE) has often been discussed. However, there are limited studies on criminal victimization of PWE-in particular, how such victimizations occur. We identified criminal cases involving victims with epilepsy using databases containing criminal judgments and found 16 such cases between 1990 and 2019.

Evidence regarding postoperative radiation therapy (PORT) for metastases to the long bones is lacking. Characterizing the current practice patterns and identifying factors that influence dose-fractionation schedules are essential for future clinical trials. An internet-based survey of the palliative RT subgroup of the Japanese Radiation Oncology Study Group was performed in 2017 to collect data regarding PORT prescription practices and dose-fractionation schedules.

HLA genotype-clinical phenotype correlations in multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders based on Japan MS/NMOSD Biobank data.

HLA genotype-clinical phenotype correlations are not established for multiple sclerosis (MS) and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD). We studied HLA-DRB1/DPB1 genotype-phenotype correlations in 528 MS and 165 NMOSD cases using Japan MS/NMOSD Biobank materials. HLA-DRB1*04:05, DRB1*15:01 and DPB1*03:01 correlated with MS susceptibility and DRB1*01:01, DRB1*09:01, DRB1*13:02 and DPB1*04:01 were protective against MS.

However, few studies have addressed this issue in a middle-aged population considering sex and the conditions prior to breakfast. Therefore, we investigated clinical parameters, self-reported BS, late-night dinner (LND) eating, and late-night snacking (LNS) in ten body mass index (BMI) categories in a cross-sectional study of 892,578 non-diabetic people aged 40-74 years old who underwent a checkup.

Endocytoscopic observation with methylene blue staining for duodenal neoplasms associated with familial adenomatous polyposis.

Duodenal cancer is a leading cause of death after colectomy in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP). Detailed endoscopic evaluation of duodenal lesions with potential for carcinoma development is therefore mandatory. Here we investigated the features of duodenal lesions in FAP patients using an endocytoscopy system (ECS).

Risk factors for neonatal bronchopulmonary dysplasia in extremely preterm premature rupture of membranes: a retrospective study.

Background: Determination of the optimal timing for termination of pregnancy in cases of preterm premature rupture of membranes (pPROM) during the extremely preterm period is still difficult. Bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) is a major disease widely taken into account when determining the prognosis of respiratory disorders in a neonate. Many aspects of this disease remain unclear.

Temporal hemiarthroplasty for distal femoral osteosarcoma in early childhood: a case report.

Background: Prosthetic reconstruction for distal femoral osteosarcoma is challenging for younger children. We herein report a successful case of limb-sparing surgery for a younger patient with distal femoral osteosarcoma requiring osteo-articular resection.

Case Presentation: A 5-year-old girl with high-grade conventional osteosarcoma in the left distal femur underwent a series of surgeries.

Masked malignant phenotype with a benign appearance: beat-up copy number profile may be the key for hemangioblastoma dissemination.

Dissemination of histologically benign hemangioblastoma is rare; approximately 30 cases have previously been reported, and all cases occurred several months to years after surgical resection. Herein, we report a case of hemangioblastoma in which leptomeningeal dissemination occurred 2 years after hypofractionated radiation therapy (39 Gy/13 fractions). The tumor was treated primarily with radiation without surgical resection.

Kidney GATA3 regulatory T cells play roles in the convalescence stage after antibody-mediated renal injury.

FoxP3 regulatory T cells (Tregs) play crucial roles in peripheral immune tolerance. In addition, Tregs that reside or accumulate in nonlymphoid tissues, called tissue Tregs, exhibit tissue-specific functions and contribute to the maintenance of tissue homeostasis and repair. In an experimental mouse model of crescentic glomerulonephritis induced by an anti-glomerular basement membrane antibody, Tregs started to accumulate in the kidney on day 10 of disease onset and remained at high levels (~30-35% of CD4 T cells) during the late stage (days 21-90), which correlated with stable disease control.

Background: Trace proteinuria (TrP), which is usually defined as ± by dipstick urinalysis, is considered as normal and of limited clinical significance. However, the relationship between TrP and overt proteinuria (OP) (≥ +1) in the future is unknown. Therefore, we investigated the association between TrP and future incidence of OP in a community-based cohort study.

Estimation of the cable effect in megavoltage photon beam by measurement and Monte Carlo simulation.

Purpose: Ionization chambers are widely used for dosimetry with megavoltage photon beams. Several properties of ionization chambers, including the cable effect, polarity effect, and ion recombination loss, are described in standard dosimetry protocols. The cable effect is categorized as the leakage current and Compton current, and careful consideration of these factors has been described not only in reference dosimetry but also in large fields.

Better remission rates in elderly Japanese patients with primary membranous nephropathy in nationwide real-world practice: The Japan Nephrotic Syndrome Cohort Study (JNSCS).

Background: The aim of the present study was to clarify the prevalence of immunosuppressive drug use and outcomes in elderly and non-elderly patients with primary membranous nephropathy (MN) in nationwide real-world practice in Japan.

Patients And Methods: Between 2009 and 2010, 374 patients with primary nephrotic syndrome were enrolled in the cohort study (The Japan Nephrotic Syndrome Cohort Study, JNSCS), including 126 adult patients with MN. Their clinical characteristics were compared with those of nephrotic patients with primary MN registered in a large nationwide registry (The Japan Renal Biopsy Registry, J-RBR).
