Background: Cocoa contains biologically active ingredients that have broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity, which includes an inhibitory effect on influenza virus infection.

Results: A cocoa extract (CE) was prepared by treating defatted cocoa powder with boiling water. The extract demonstrated dose-dependent inhibition of infection in Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells infected with human influenza virus A (H1N1, H3N2), human influenza virus B and avian influenza viruses (H5N1, H5N9).

Effectiveness of brace treatment for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis.

Objectives: Effectiveness of brace treatment for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) was demonstrated by the BrAIST study in 2013. Objectives of this study were to confirm its effectiveness by analyzing our results and to clarify the factors affecting the results of the treatment.

Materials And Methods: According to the Scoliosis Research Society AIS brace studies standardization criteria, patients with age 10 years or older, Risser 0 to II, less than 1 year post-menarche, curve magnitude 25 to 40 degrees before brace treatment and who received no prior treatment were included in the study.

Amniotic fluid embolism (AFE) is a rare but life-threatening maternal emergency caused by the entry of amniotic fluid contents into the maternal circulation. The clinical manifestations of AFE are heterogeneous, leading to misdiagnosis or treatment delay. Kanayama and colleagues distinguished the cardiopulmonary collapse type (or classic type) from the disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) type of AFE on the basis of the presence of uterine atony and DIC in the latter prior to cardiopulmonary failure.

Intrapartum anti-disseminated intravascular coagulation therapy leading to successful vaginal delivery following intrauterine fetal death caused by placental abruption: a case report.

Introduction: Disseminated intravascular coagulation due to placental abruption with intrauterine fetal death is not uncommon. It can result in increased maternal mortality rates and the need for hysterectomy or greater transfusion volumes if the delivery is not completed within six to eight hours. A case of pulmonary sarcoma with significant extension into the right lung.

A female patient in her 30s was referred to us with a mass approximately 8 centimeters in diameter in right lung segment 6. Bronchoscopy was done, and a tumorous lesion obstructing right B6 was found. Biopsy of this lesion supported suspicions of sarcoma or spindle cell carcinoma.

Objectives: This investigation was conducted to assess the use of the intratumoral mRNA expression levels of nucleic acid-metabolizing enzymes as biomarkers of adjuvant chemotherapy for non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) using uracil-tegafur in a multi-institutional prospective study.

Materials And Methods: 236 patients with a completely resected NSCLC (adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma) of pathological stage IA (maximum tumor diameter of 2 cm or greater), IB, and II tumors were given a dose of 250 mg of uracil-tegafur per square meter of body surface area per day orally for two years after surgery. Pharyngolaryngeal paralysis in a patient with pharyngeal tuberculosis.

Pharyngeal tuberculosis is a rare disease, and its commonly reported symptoms include sore throat, dysphagia, and throat discomfort. The dysphagia in pharyngeal tuberculosis cases is not due to pharyngolaryngeal paralysis but due to odynophagia. Herein, we describe the first case of dysphagia caused by pharyngolaryngeal paralysis secondary to pharyngeal tuberculosis.

Total absence of the pericardium incidentally found during surgery for spontaneous pneumothorax.

Congenital absence of the pericardium is a rare malformation which is often found incidentally. We report a case of pericardial absence which was found during surgery for spontaneous pneumothorax. Image analyses suggested that the pericardial absence was bilateral and total.

Antibodies to neural and non-neural autoantigens in Japanese patients with CNS demyelinating disorders.

Anti-aquaporin 4 (AQP4) antibodies (Abs) are essential in neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD), but the relationship between CNS demyelinating disorders (CNSDD) and other neural Abs remains unclear. Here we screened anti-neural Abs in the sera of 70 Japanese CNSDD patients. While two had only demyelinating events among three anti-N-methyl-d-aspartate receptor (NMDAR) Ab-positive subjects, the other subject who also had anti-AQP4 Abs experienced episodes of anti-NMDAR encephalitis and of NMOSD.

Sleep quality and stress in women with pregnancy-induced hypertension and gestational diabetes mellitus.

Background: Pregnant women with complications including pregnancy-induced hypertension (PIH) and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) often experience disrupted sleep patterns because of activation of the sympathetic nervous system. These pathologies are aggravated by sympathetic nervous system activation and may be related to stress. The present study aimed to clarify the characteristics of and changes in sleep quality and stress in pregnant women with PIH and GDM during the second and third trimesters.

The pathogenesis of intracranial growing teratoma syndrome: proliferation of tumor cells or formation of multiple expanding cysts? Two case reports and review of the literature.

Purpose: Growing teratoma syndrome (GTS) is a rare clinical phenomenon defined as the paradoxical growth of mature teratoma components during or after chemotherapy. The mechanism of this phenomenon is not well understood. We present two cases of pineal mixed germ cell tumors that exhibited the similar course to GTS and speculate its pathogenesis.

Persistent verbal and behavioral deficits after resection of the left supplementary motor area in epilepsy surgery.

An 8-year-old boy underwent a resection for focal cortical dysplasia at the left supplementary motor area (SMA) for the treatment of intractable epilepsy. The manifestations of SMA syndrome, such as transient mutism and right hemiparesis, resolved within a few weeks. Verbal disfluency and impaired executive function, accompanied by impulsivity and distractibility, persisted for more than 12months.

Hemodynamics of the reconstructed gastric tube during esophagectomy: assessment of outcomes with indocyanine green fluorescence.

Background: Construction of a gastric tube that is well perfused with blood during esophagectomy is the most important factor in avoiding anastomotic leakage. We clarified the hemodynamics of the reconstructed gastric tube with indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence.

Methods: In 20 patients undergoing gastric tube reconstruction during esophagectomy, we evaluated blood flow in the gastric tube with ICG fluorescence imaging.

Eicosapentaenoic Acid combined with optimal statin therapy improves endothelial dysfunction in patients with coronary artery disease.

Purpose: Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) has been reported to augment endothelial function and improve clinical outcomes in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). The purpose of this study was to determine whether EPA could improve residual endothelial dysfunction despite adequate lipid-lowering with statin in CAD patients.

Methods: Eighty patients with established CAD, who had been on statin treatment and had serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels <100 mg/dl, were randomly assigned to receive either 1,800 mg of EPA daily plus statin (EPA group, n = 40) or statin alone (Control group, n = 40).

This study was undertaken to test the hypothesis that noninvasive echocardiographic indexes obtained using early diastolic mitral annular and inflow velocities reflect diastolic function in children. We included in this study 61 consecutive pediatric patients (age 0.4–13 years) who underwent cardiac catheterization for various heart diseases with biventricular circulation.

Short-term intravenous antimicrobial prophylaxis for elective rectal cancer surgery: results of a prospective randomized non-inferiority trial.

Purpose: To investigate the non-inferiority of postoperative single-dose intravenous antimicrobial prophylaxis to multiple-dose intravenous antimicrobial prophylaxis in terms of the incidence of surgical site infections (SSIs) in patients undergoing elective rectal cancer surgery by a prospective randomized study.

Methods: Patients undergoing elective surgery for rectal cancer were randomized to receive a single intravenous injection of flomoxef (group 1) or five additional doses (group 2) of flomoxef after the surgery. All the patients had received preoperative oral antibiotic prophylaxis (kanamycin and erythromycin) after mechanical cleansing within 24 h prior to surgery, and had received intravenous flomoxef during surgery.

We report on a case of the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH) associated with lupus erythematosus in the central nervous system (CNS). A 73-year-old woman with essential hypertension suddenly demonstrated consciousness disturbance. Upon her admission, laboratory data showed significant hyponatremia (114 mEq/L) and a lack of body fluid loss.

Background: Adrenomedullin (AM) possesses vasodilative and cell-protective properties. Glycine combines with the C-terminal of AM to form mature, physiologically active AM (mAM). AM is reportedly induced by high glucose condition in vascular endothelial or smooth muscle cells; however, little is known on how AM is activated by amidation.

Prediction of postoperative pulmonary function: preliminary comparison of single-breath dual-energy xenon CT with three conventional methods.

Purpose: To assess the use of xenon ventilation maps (Xe-images) for predicting postoperative pulmonary function.

Materials And Methods: After study approval by the institutional review board, written informed consent was obtained from 30 patients with lung tumors who underwent pre- and postoperative spirometry, pulmonary perfusion SPECT and dual-energy CT (80 kV and 140 kV/Sn) after single-breath inspiration of 35 % xenon. Xe-images were calculated by three-material decomposition.

Significance of radical resection for pilomyxoid astrocytoma of the cerebellum: a case report and review of the literature.

Background: Pilomyxoid astrocytoma (PMA) was recently classified as a variant of pilocytic astrocytoma (PA) with significantly more aggressive clinical features than those of PA. Like PAs, PMAs frequently arise in the chiasmatic/hypothalamic regions. The cerebellum is also a common site of occurrence for PAs but not for PMAs.
