Peroral cholangioscopy (POCS) is valuable for assessing malignant biliary strictures; however, biliary drainage prior to POCS often hinders accurate diagnosis. This retrospective study aimed to investigate the feasibility of POCS using a newly developed cholangioscope, CHF-B290, during initial endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for malignant biliary strictures. This multicenter retrospective study included patients who underwent initial ERCP for malignant biliary strictures at two institutions between January 2018 and March 2022.

Acute kidney injury (AKI) due to vitamin D therapy for osteoporosis is encountered in clinical practice, but epidemiological studies are scarce. We aimed to determine the association between AKI and vitamin D therapy and to identify risk factors for AKI using the Japanese Adverse Drug Event Report database. We used reporting odds ratios (RORs) to detect signals and evaluate risk factors using multiple logistic regression analysis.

Although some dietary supplements have been reported to cause renal dysfunction, there have been few reports of supplement-induced Fanconi syndrome. We present the case of a 56-year-old woman with Fanconi syndrome that developed after she consumed a red yeast rice supplement. She was referred to our hospital because of renal dysfunction, and was found to have electrolyte abnormalities, including hypophosphatemia and hypouricemia, renal diabetes, and hyperchloremic metabolic acidosis, and was, therefore, diagnosed with Fanconi syndrome.

Background: Although functional end-to-end anastomosis (FEEA) using a stapler in the colorectal field has been recognised worldwide, the technique varies by surgeon, and the safety of anastomosis using different techniques is unknown.
Methods: This multicentre prospective observational cohort study was conducted by the KYCC Study Group in Yokohama, Japan, and included patients who underwent colonic resection at seven centres between April 2020 and March 2022. This study compared the incidence of surgery-related abdominal complications (SAC: anastomotic leakage [AL], anastomotic bleeding, intra-abdominal abscess, enteritis, ileus, surgical site infection, and other abdominal complications) between two different methods of FEEA (one-step [OS] method: simultaneous anastomosis and bowel resection; two-step [TS] method: anastomosis after bowel resection).

Introduction: Indocyanine green fluorescence imaging (ICG-FI) reduces anastomotic leakage (AL) in rectal cancer surgery. However, no studies investigating risk factors for anastomotic leakage specific to the group using ICG-FI have ever previously been conducted. The purpose of this retrospective multicenter study was to ascertain the risk factors for AL in the group using ICG-FI.

Background: Aneurysms located in the distal middle cerebral artery (DMCA) are relatively rare and lack an established treatment strategy. For DMCA aneurysms, we performed a one-stage combined procedure of endovascular parent artery occlusion (PAO) with coils and superficial temporal artery to middle cerebral artery (STA-MCA) bypass in a hybrid operating room (HOR). The aim of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of this procedure.

We evaluated the effectiveness of a mobile health (mHealth) intervention for diabetic kidney disease patients by conducting a 12-month randomized controlled trial among 126 type 2 diabetes mellitus patients with moderately increased albuminuria (urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR): 30-299 mg/g creatinine) recruited from eight clinical sites in Japan. Using a Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) behavior change theory framework, the intervention provides patients detailed information in order to improve patient control over exercise and dietary behaviors. In addition to standard care, the intervention group received DialBetesPlus, a self-management support system allowing patients to monitor exercise, blood glucose, diet, blood pressure, and body weight via a smartphone application.

Surgery is the most effective treatment for early-stage lung cancer; however, it poses a higher physical burden than other treatment options. Therefore, understanding the perioperative course of patients is important. Using the Short Form Health Survey 36, we prospectively measured the physical quality of life of patients who underwent anatomical pulmonary resection for non-small cell lung cancer at Shonan Kamakura General Hospital, Kanagawa, Japan (n = 87).

Purpose: To investigate the characteristics of suspicious MRI-only visible lesions and to explore the validity of subcategorizing these lesions into the following two groups: lesions that would require immediate biopsy (4Bi) and lesions for which careful clinical follow-up could be recommended (4Fo).
Methods: A retrospective review of 108 MRI-only visible lesions in 106 patients who were diagnosed as Breast Imaging Reporting and Data System (BI-RADS) category 4 between June 2018 and June 2022 at our institution was performed by two radiologists. The breast MR images were evaluated according to BI-RADS and additional MRI descriptors (linear ductal, branching, and apparent diffusion coefficient values).

Single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) of ATP2B1 gene are associated with essential hypertension but their association with resistant hypertension (RHT) remains unexplored. The authors examined the relationship between ATP2B1 SNPs and RHT by genotyping 12 SNPs in ATP2B1 gene of 1124 Japanese individuals with lifestyle-related diseases. Patients with RHT had inadequate blood pressure (BP) control using three antihypertensive drugs or used ≥4 antihypertensive drugs.
