Background: In patients with normophosphatemia with chronic kidney disease (CKD), fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) and parathyroid hormone (PTH) increase urinary phosphate excretion while maintaining serum phosphate within the normal range. Recent reports have shown that, in this stage, phosphate binders do not decrease serum FGF23 and PTH levels. Iron deficiency promotes transcription of FGF23 and iron-supplementation for iron deficiency decreases serum FGF23 levels.

An accumulation of protein-bound uremic toxins (PBUTs) is one of major reasons for development of uremia-related complications. We examined the PBUT removal ability of a hexadecyl-immobilized cellulose bead (HICB)-containing column for patients undergoing hemodialysis. Adsorption of indoxyl sulfate (IS), a representative PBUT, to HICBs was examined in vitro.

Treatment support is anticipated to improve the results of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) treatment in cases in which visualization of tumors using the conventional B-mode is unclear. In the present study, the effectiveness of treatment support for RFA reducing the local recurrence rate of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) that are located directly adjacent to the diaphragm, and which are difficult to visualize with B-mode ultrasound imaging, was investigated. A total of 103 HCC tumors measuring <5 cm, which were located abutting the diaphragm, and which were difficult to visualize using the B-mode, were treated using RFA.

Aim: To evaluate the efficacy of the newly proposed albumin-bilirubin (ALBI) grade for therapy selection, clinical features of patients treated with radiofrequency ablation (RFA) were elucidated.

Methods: From 2000 to 2015, 1101 patients with HCC (<3 cm, ≤3 tumors) treated with RFA were enrolled, with the following clinical features: 734 men and 367 women; 779 with hepatitis C virus, 153 with hepatitis B virus, 5 with hepatitis C and B, and 164 others; and Child-Pugh classification (CP) A : B ratio of 842:259. Liver damage classification (LD) using the indocyanine green retention rate at 15 min and ALBI-grade were compared in regard to the prognoses of those patients.

Hereditary hypouricemia is generally caused by renal hypouricemia, an autosomal recessive disorder that is characterized by impaired renal tubular uric acid transport, or by xanthinuria, a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by a deficiency of xanthine dehydrogenase (XDH; xanthinuria type I) or by a deficiency of both XDH and aldehyde oxidase (xanthinuria type II). In contrast to renal hypouricemia, which sometimes leads to exercise-induced acute kidney injury (EIAKI), xanthinuria has not been associated with this disorder. We report here a case of xanthinuria type I due to a compound heterozygous mutation.

Percutaneous transhepatic obliteration (PTO) and percutaneous transhepatic sclerotherapy (PTS) are widely performed as an emergency measure in cases of variceal hemorrhage and intractable hepatic encephalopathy. The PTO/PTS technique is capable of directly blocking the blood supply in cases in which balloon-occluded retrograde transvenous obliteration (B-RTO) is not effective, or in cases with complicated collateral flow. Although PTO/PTS is not currently the first choice due to the invasiveness of transhepatic puncture, this procedure can modify the blood flow in an antegrade manner.
