Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is among the most frequently-occurring neurodegenerative diseases in humans. Although mitochondrial dysfunction is suggested to play a central role in PD pathogenesis, few studies have clinically evaluated mitochondrial function in PD patients. We therefore aimed to determine whether mitochondrial function is altered in PD patients by applying two approaches that are normally used for the diagnosis of mitochondrial disorder (MD).

Austrian syndrome is a rare condition caused by invasive Streptococcus pneumoniae, comprising a triad of pneumococcal meningitis, endocarditis, and pneumonia. Herein, we report a 59-year-old male patient who presented with fever and tenderness of the right shoulder. Although the initial diagnosis was acromioclavicular joint septic arthritis, the present case showed a reduced level of consciousness, pulmonary infiltrates, cerebral infarcts, and destruction of the mitral valve.

Background: This study evaluated the diagnostic capability of on-site coronary computed tomography-derived computational fractional flow reserve (CT-FFR) determinations for detecting coronary artery disease (CAD), as assessed by invasive fractional flow reserve (FFR).

Methods and results: Seventy-four patients with coronary artery calcium scores <1,500 who underwent coronary CT angiography (CTA) and invasive FFR measurements within 90 days were retrospectively reviewed. CT-FFR was computed using a prototype machine-learning (ML) algorithm in 91 vessels; 47 vessels of 42 patients were determined to have significant CAD (FFR ≤0.

We investigated the effects of variations in anesthesia exposure time prior to conducting anxiety response behavioral testing in sham controls from an experimental murine model. The staying time in the center area of the Open Field test in the "long exposure" group was significantly decreased compared to that of the "short exposure" group. Significant correlation was found between anesthesia time and the duration of staying time in the center area.

Aim: The predictors for the development of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after direct-acting antiviral (DAA) treatment were investigated.

Methods: A total of 1174 patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection were treated with DAA therapy (sofosbuvir and ledipasvir [n = 615], sofosbuvir and ribavirin [n = 380], and daclatasvir and asunaprevir [n = 179]) and achieved sustained virologic response (SVR). The HCC development rate and the factors that might contribute to the development of HCC after the end of DAA treatment were analyzed.

Reconstruction of Protein/Liposome Complex.

Methods Mol Biol

May 2019

Department of Pharmacology, Ehime University Graduate School of Medicine, Toon, Ehime, Japan.

Most ion channels and receptors are distributed in cell membranes and are known as membrane proteins. These membrane proteins are folded in the cell membrane and become functional proteins. Here, we demonstrate a method of reconstructing membrane proteins into liposome membranes which are commonly used as artificial cell membranes.

Background: There are few effective medications for non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). We investigated the efficacy of ipragliflozin (selective sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 inhibitor [SGLT2I]) for the treatment of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) complicated by non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).

Methods: We prospectively enrolled patients with T2DM complicated by NAFLD treated at our institutions from January 2015 to December 2016.

Objectives: Whole-heart coronary magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is a promising non-contrast, radiation-free technique for assessing the coronary artery. Yet, a disadvantage of coronary MRA is the relatively long acquisition time. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the scan time and image quality of compressed sensing (CS) coronary MRA compared with conventional coronary MRA.

Background: The effect of cigarette smoking on the onset of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is unclear, especially that associated with drinking small amounts of alcohol. We conducted a longitudinal study to investigate the relationship between cigarette smoking and NAFLD onset, which was stratified according to the amount of alcohol consumed.

Methods: We enrolled 7,905 Japanese subjects who had received annual health checkups more than twice between April 2003 and August 2013, 4,045 of whom met at least one of the following exclusion criteria and were excluded: (a) fatty liver at baseline; (b) hepatitis B or hepatitis C; (c) alcohol consumption (men: ≥210 g/wk; women: ≥140 g/wk); (d) change in alcohol drinking status between baseline and the study's endpoint; (e) change in cigarette smoking habits between baseline and the study's endpoint; or (f) current treatment with antidiabetic agents, antihypertensive agents, and/or lipid-lowering agents.

Background: The vascular response, in terms of quality and quantity, of the second- and third-generation drug-eluting stents (2G- and 3G-DES, respectively) was assessed prospectively on coronary angioscopy (CAS).

Methods and results: The Multicenter study on Intra-Coronary AngioScopy After Stent (MICASA) is a multicenter CAS registry. A total of 107 DES (71 2G- and 36 3G-DES) were prospectively observed on CAS 8.

Pilot Study of a Device to Induce the Hanger Reflex in Patients with Cervical Dystonia.

Neurol Med Chir (Tokyo)

May 2018

Department of Neurosurgery, Graduate School of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Science, University of Toyama.

The hanger reflex (HR) is an involuntary head rotation that occurs in response to a clothes hanger encircling the head and compressing the unilateral fronto-temporal area. Here, we developed an elliptical device to induce the HR and examined its utility for the treatment of cervical dystonia (CD). The study included 19 patients with rotational-type CD.

Background: Atrophic gastritis can be classified according to characteristic mucosal patterns observed by Blue LASER Imaging (BLI) in a medium-range to distant view.

Aims: To facilitate the endoscopic diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori (HP)-related gastritis, we investigated whether atrophic mucosal patterns correlated with HP infection based on the image interpretations of three endoscopists blinded to clinical features.

Methods: This study included 441 patients diagnosed as having atrophic gastritis by upper gastrointestinal endoscopy at Nishikawa Gastrointestinal Clinic between April 1, 2015 and March 31, 2016.

Objectives: In the general population, late-night dinner is positively associated with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). No evidence exists regarding the relationship between eating behaviours and GERD in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, though the prevalence of GERD in patients with type 2 diabetes is higher than in those without diabetes. We conducted this study to investigate the association between eating behaviours and GERD in Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes.

Among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, the association between B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and renal function remains controversial. We therefore investigated this issue among Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. This study included 687 Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Article Synopsis
  • Primary extranodal malignant lymphoma of the thyroid is rare and typically involves neoplastic transformation of B cells, particularly germinal center-like or memory B cells.
  • An autopsy of an 83-year-old Japanese woman revealed a non-GCB subtype of diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) that lacked common mutations usually found in more aggressive forms.
  • This case highlights a unique subtype of DLBCL, categorized as type 3, which exhibits extremely aggressive local behavior without typical genetic markers associated with activated B-cell types.

Aim: Nocturia is common among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, but limited evidence regarding the association between body mass index (BMI) and nocturia exists among such patients. The aim of the present study, therefore, was to evaluate the association between BMI and nocturia among Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Methods: Study participants were 809 Japanese patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.
