Article Synopsis
  • Laparoscopic surgery (LAP) is associated with fewer complications and improved outcomes for elderly patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery, highlighting its minimal invasiveness compared to traditional methods.
  • In a study of 85 patients over 80 years old, LAP showed significantly lower rates of major complications and surgical site infections.
  • The research indicates that LAP not only reduces the risk of complications but also decreases non cancer-related mortality in very elderly patients, suggesting better overall survival rates.

  • Remote-access thyroidectomy (RAT) offers a cosmetic advantage by avoiding neck scars compared to traditional surgery, but it has typically been avoided in patients with prior cervical treatments.
  • A case study is presented of a 77-year-old male with papillary thyroid carcinoma who successfully underwent RAT despite a history of cervical radiation therapy for parotid gland cancer.
  • This unique case suggests that RAT can be performed safely in selected patients, emphasizing its potential even in cases with prior irradiation, with superior cosmetic results.

Plast Reconstr Surg Glob Open

November 2021

Department of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery, Saitama Medical University, Saitama, Japan.

We experienced a case of a sacral pressure ulcer complicated with Leriche syndrome, an aortoiliac artery occlusion that has not been previously reported. In this case, the abdominal aorta below the bifurcation of the renal arteries into the bilateral common iliac arteries was occluded, and wound healing was delayed. Therefore, endovascular treatment was used for managing this condition, and wound healing was accelerated.

Aromatic l-amino acid decarboxylase (AADC) is an essential dopamine-synthesizing enzyme. In children with AADC deficiency, the gene delivery of AADC into the putamen, which functionally interacts with cortical regions, was found to improve motor function and ameliorate dystonia. However, how the restoration of dopamine in the putamen in association with cortico-putaminal networks leads to therapeutic effects remains unclear.
