Institute of Biomedical Engineering, University of Montréal, Montréal, Canada; Research Center, CHU Sainte-Justine University Hospital Centre, Montréal, Canada; Department of Radiology, Radio-oncology and Nuclear Medicine, University of Montréal, Montréal, Canada. Electronic address:

The morphology and thickness of the retinal layers are valuable biomarkers for retinal health and development. The retinal layers in mice are similar to those in humans; thus, a mouse is appropriate for studying the retina. The objectives of this systematic review were: (1) to describe normal retinal morphology quantitatively using retinal layer thickness measured from birth to age 6 months in healthy mice; and (2) to describe morphological changes in physiological retinal development over time using the longitudinal (in vivo) and cross-sectional (ex vivo) data from the included studies.

Article Synopsis
  • Microsurgical resection of epilepsy-related lesions carries risks of motor impairment, prompting the exploration of less invasive options like MRI-guided laser interstitial thermal therapy (MRgLITT) which has shown improved neurological outcomes.
  • A case study of a 17-year-old athlete highlighted the use of advanced tractography techniques to map the corticospinal tract (CST), aiding in presurgical planning and guiding the MRgLITT procedure.
  • The integration of CST tractography proved to be effective in enhancing the MRgLITT process, allowing for successful tumor ablation while preserving motor function, although challenges in tractography accuracy and thermal output predictability remain to be addressed.

Background And Objectives: Complete resection of epileptogenic zone is the single most important determinant of favorable seizure outcomes in resective surgery. However, identifying and resecting this zone is challenging in patients harboring diffuse; MRI-occult malformations of cortical development, such as focal cortical dysplasia; or acquired pathology, such as Rasmussen encephalitis. Intraoperative adjuncts that can aid in identifying the lesion and/or epileptogenic zone can optimize the extent of resection and seizure outcome.

DEBRA International is undertaking a long-term initiative to develop clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) for epidermolysis bullosa (EB), to -improve the clinical care of people living with EB. Current neonatal care is based on evidence, clinical expertise and trial and error, with collaboration between the EB specialist team, parent or carer and patient, and is dependent on the neonate's individual presentation and type of EB. Early intervention based on research and clinical practice is needed to establish a foundation of knowledge to guide international practitioners to create and improve standards of care and to be able to work effectively with those newly diagnosed with EB.

Background: Though rates of tobacco smoking have decreased consistently over the past 3 decades, cigarette use remains the top preventable cause of premature death in North America. The Clinical Effort Against Secondhand Smoke Exposure (CEASE) is a medical clinic-based intervention that systematically screens parents for tobacco use and offers them direct access to evidence-based smoking cessation services. While the effectiveness of CEASE for parents who smoke has already been demonstrated in the United States, the CEASE model has not yet been tested in Canada, among parents who use e-cigarettes, or among adolescents who use cigarettes and e-cigarettes.

Background And Objectives: Hemimegalencephaly (HME) is a rare diffuse malformation of cortical development characterized by unihemispheric hypertrophy, drug-resistant epilepsy (DRE), hemiparesis, and developmental delay. Definitive treatment for HME-related DRE is hemispheric surgery through either anatomic (AH) or functional hemispherectomy (FH). This individual patient data meta-analysis assessed seizure outcomes of AH and FH for HME with pharmacoresistant epilepsy, predictors of Engel I, and efficacy of different FH approaches.

Article Synopsis
  • Lennox-Gastaut syndrome (LGS) is a severe epilepsy disorder in children that is hard to treat; when medications fail, surgeries like vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) and corpus callosotomy (CC) may be options, with CC often being more effective.
  • This study reviewed the outcomes of 127 children with LGS who had undergone CC after unsuccessful VNS, focusing on their seizure types and surgery results.
  • The findings showed that about 83% of patients experienced at least a 50% reduction in drop attacks after CC, demonstrating that CC is an important option for improving seizure control with low surgical risks.

While e-cigarette and combustible cigarette use remains more common among youth, herbal smoking products are gaining interest and popularity among children and adolescents. Herbal smoking products are often touted as a safer alternative to tobacco smoking or nicotine vaping; however, research suggests that they emit significant levels of toxicants and carcinogens posing risks to child and adolescent health. The low perceived risk coupled with youth-friendly flavours and easy access may entice youth to use herbal smoking products and increase the risk of subsequent tobacco and substance use.
