Graft failure (GF) is a life-threatening complication after allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT). In the absence of autologous recovery, a second HCT is necessary to attempt to prevent death due to prolonged pancytopenia. Previous studies describing outcomes of second HCT performed after GF with different types of donor sources report wide ranges of overall survival (OS) and transplantation-related mortality (TRM); however, studies including a large number of patients undergoing a second HCT with umbilical cord blood (UCB) as the graft source are scarce.

Osteoid osteomas are benign primary bone tumors that typically arise in posterior vertebrae of the spine. For patients with severe pain or those poorly controlled with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, surgical management is the mainstay of treatment. The recommended surgical treatment option is complete open excision, although minimally invasive CT-guided percutaneous excision and CT-guided radiofrequency ablation have been reported.

Infantile hemangioma (IH) is the most common benign vascular tumor of infancy, affecting about 5% of infants. It has a characteristic growth pattern of early rapid proliferation followed by progressive involution. Although most IH evolve favorably, complications are observed in 10-15% of cases, justifying treatment.

Background: A substantial number of survivors of childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) suffer from treatment-related late adverse effects. While multiple studies have identified the effects of chemotherapeutics and radiation therapy on musculoskeletal outcomes, few have investigated their associations with genetic factors.
Methods: Here we analyzed musculoskeletal complications in relation to common and rare genetic variants derived through whole-exome sequencing of the PETALE cohort.

Computational models are increasingly used to assess spine biomechanics and support surgical planning. However, varying levels of model verification and validation, along with characterization of uncertainty effects limit the level of confidence in their predictive potential. The objective was to assess the credibility of an adult spine deformity instrumentation model for proximal junction failure (PJF) analysis using the ASME V&V40:2018 framework.

As the global health crisis unfolded, many academic conferences moved online in 2020. This move has been hailed as a positive step towards inclusivity in its attenuation of economic, physical, and legal barriers and effectively enabled many individuals from groups that have traditionally been underrepresented to join and participate. A number of studies have outlined how moving online made it possible to gather a more global community and has increased opportunities for individuals with various constraints, e.

The objective was to assess deformity correction and bone-screw force associated respectively with concave manipulation first, convex manipulation first, and different differential rod contouring configurations. Instrumentation scenarios were computationally simulated for 10 AIS cases with mean thoracic Cobb angle (MT) of 54±8°, apical vertebral rotation (AVR) of 19±2° and thoracic kyphosis of 21±9°. Instrumentations with major correction maneuvers using the concave side rod were first simulated; instrumentations with major correction maneuvers using the convex side rod were then simulated.

The sacroiliac joint (SIJ) is a known pain generator that, in severe cases, may require surgical fixation to reduce intra-articular displacements and allow for arthrodesis. The objective of this computational study was to analyze how the number of implants affected SIJ stabilization with patient-specific characteristics such as the pelvic geometry and bone quality. Detailed finite element models were developed to account for three pelvises of differing anatomy.

In the past 20 years, we have witnessed tremendous advances in our ability to diagnose and treat genetic diseases of the kidney caused by complement dysregulation. Staggering progress was realized toward a better understanding of the genetic underpinnings and pathophysiology of many forms of atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome (aHUS) and C3-dominant glomerulopathies that are driven by complement system abnormalities. Many of these seminal discoveries paved the way for the design and characterization of several innovative therapies, some of which have already radically improved patients' outcomes.

Background: International asthma guidelines recommend the monitoring of peak expiratory flow (PEF) as part of asthma self-management in children and adolescents who poorly perceive airflow obstruction, those with a history of severe exacerbations, or those who have difficulty controlling asthma. Measured with a peak flow meter, PEF represents a person's maximum speed of expiration and helps individuals to follow their disease evolution and, ultimately, to prevent asthma exacerbations. However, patient adherence to regular peak flow meter use is poor, particularly in pediatric populations.

The rapid emergence of youth vaping has completely changed the landscape of adolescent substance use in Canada and has become a pressing public health issue of our time. While nicotine remains the most common substance encountered in vaping devices, cannabis vaping is now reported by one-third of youth who vape. Though cannabis vaping is thought to generate fewer toxic emissions than cannabis smoking, it has been associated with several cases of acute lung injury and often involves high-potency forms of cannabis, exposing youth to several acute and long-term health risks.

The ubiquitin-proteasome system facilitates the degradation of unstable or damaged proteins. UBR1-7, which are members of hundreds of E3 ubiquitin ligases, recognize and regulate the half-life of specific proteins on the basis of their N-terminal sequences ("N-end rule"). In seven individuals with intellectual disability, epilepsy, ptosis, hypothyroidism, and genital anomalies, we uncovered bi-allelic variants in UBR7.

Mental health issues during the perinatal period are common; up to 29% of pregnant and 15% of postpartum women meet psychiatric diagnostic criteria. Despite its ubiquity, little is known about the longitudinal trajectories of perinatal psychiatric illness. This paper describes a collaboration among six perinatal mental health services in Quebec, Canada, to create an electronic databank that captures longitudinal patient data over the course of the perinatal period.

Most doctoral curriculums in Canada and in the United States include a mandatory comprehensive examination (CE) meant to evaluate, after a year, the students' ability to conduct research. Although the format differs between faculties, the CE has nevertheless been described by students as anxiety provoking because in most cases, a failure terminates doctoral training. A lack of scientific literature on the experiences of PhD nursing students with the CE motivated us to explore these experience and the students' needs with regard to this exam.
