Recent studies of the spread of substances penetrating the disrupted blood-brain barrier have revealed that the spread in the parenchyma surrounding a vessel has a complex character. In particular, a flow-like motion occurred for a short time that exhibits a smooth transition to diffusional spread. To address the possible physical background of such behavior, we created a system formed by a hydrogel medium with a channel filled by a marker solution, which can serve as a physical model mimicking the process of a substance passively spreading to the brain's parenchyma when the blood-brain barrier is disrupted.

For the first time, we introduced chemomechanical self-oscillating poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)-based gels containing catalytically active Fe or Ru complexes both as crosslinkers and as pendant groups. All the obtained gels exhibited sustained autonomous oscillations driven by the Belousov-Zhabotinsky reaction within their structure. The Ru complex-based gels also demonstrated pronounced chemomechanical oscillations; they periodically swelled/shrunk when the catalyst was reduced/oxidized.

We consider a model of population growth based on the stochastic variation of the population size-controlled duplication of bacterial cells. It is shown that the proper choice of the control function allows for reproducing a variety of regimes: a logistic growth with saturation, a hindered growth typical for persistent bacterial systems, and a linear population growth detected for some mycobacterial populations. When supplied with the rectangular function having the width equal to the generation time, this approach represents the solution generalizing Rubinow's age-maturity model reproducing systems with desynchronization and saturation.

We report the synthesis of novel cobalt complexes-based catalysts designed for the oscillatory Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction. For the first time, we introduce cobalt complex-based self-oscillating gels that demonstrate autonomous color oscillations within a BZ reagent solution, functioning without the need for any external stimuli. We created acrylamide-based self-oscillating gels containing immobilized tris(2,2'-bipyridine)cobalt(II) or tris(1,10-phenanthroline)cobalt(II) complexes and gels containing covalently bound (5-acrylamido-1,10-phenanthroline)bis(2,2'-bipyridine)cobalt(II), (5-acrylamido-1,10-phenanthroline)bis(1,10-phenanthroline) cobalt(II), or tris(5-acrylamido-1,10-phenanthroline)cobalt(II) complexes.

The steady rise of drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB), which renders standard therapy regimens ineffective, necessitates the development of innovative treatment approaches. Immunotherapeutic vaccines have the potential to effectively regulate the anti-TB immune response and enhance the efficacy of anti-TB treatment. In the present study, we aimed to evaluate the potency of the mucosal vector vaccine TB/FLU-06E as part of a complex treatment regimen for drug-susceptible (DS) or drug-resistant (DR) tuberculosis in C57BL/6 mice.

A series of 13 new 3-substituted 5-(5-nitro-2-furyl)-1,2,4-oxadiazoles was synthesized from different aminonitriles. All compounds were screened in the disc diffusion test at a 100 μg/mL concentration to determine the bacterial growth inhibition zone presence and diameter, and then the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were determined for the most active compounds by serial dilution. The compounds showed antibacterial activity against ESKAPE bacteria, predominantly suppressing the growth of 5 species out of the panel.

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis with a renal involvement can be a manifestation of a disseminated infection that requires therapeutic intervention, particularly with a decrease in efficacy of conventional regimens. In the present study, we investigated the therapeutic potency of mesenchymal stem cell-derived extracellular vesicles (MSC-EVs) in the complex anti-tuberculosis treatment (ATT). A rabbit model of renal tuberculosis (rTB) was constructed by injecting of the standard strain Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv into the cortical layer of the kidney parenchyma.

In recent years, more and more attention of researchers has been paid to the study of dilated cardiomyopathy (DCMP). The prevalence of this disease in older age groups is higher than previously thought, and the course of the disease is associated with a worse prognosis and treatment difficulties. Researchers are considering various signaling molecules whose expression changes are associated with myocardial damage and the development of DCMP; evaluation of changes in the expression of melatonin and its receptors in DCMP requires further study.

In this work, we review some physical methods of macroscopic experiments, which have been recently argued to be promising for the acquisition of valuable characteristics of biomolecular structures and interactions. The methods we focused on are electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. They were chosen since it can be shown that they are able to provide a mutually complementary picture of the composition of cellular envelopes (with special attention paid to mycobacteria), transitions between their molecular patterning, and the response to biologically active substances (reactive oxygen species and their antagonists-antioxidants-as considered in our case study).

The resazurin reduction test is one of the basic tests for bacterial culture viability and drug resistance endorsed by the World Health Organisation. At the same time, conventional spectrophotometric and spectrofluorimetric methods demand rather bulky and expensive equipment. This induces a challenge for developing simpler approaches to sensor systems that are portable and applicable in resource-limited settings.

Neuromodulating the locomotor network through spinal cord electrical stimulation (SCES) is effective for restoring function in individuals with gait deficits. However, SCES alone has limited effectiveness without concurrent locomotor function training that enhances activity-dependent plasticity of spinal neuronal networks by sensory feedback. This mini review discusses recent developments in using combined interventions, such as SCES added to exoskeleton gait training (EGT).
