Background: Donation after unexpected circulatory death (uDCD) donors are often suggested to increase the number of donor organs. In 2014, a uDCD protocol was implemented in three transplant centers in the Netherlands which unfortunately did not result in additional transplantations. This study was initiated to identify demographic factors influencing the potential success of uDCD programs.

Buspirone, a partial agonist of the 5-HTR, due to potential antinociceptive properties can be useful for abdominal pain treatment in IBS patients. Pain-related effects of buspirone can be mediated by the 5-HTRs, located within the nucleus tractus solitarius. The 5-HTR involvement in pain transmission within the NTS is unclear.

Background: Recent evidence suggests that antibiotic-induced changes in the composition of intestinal microflora, as well as the systemic immunoendocrine effects that result from them, can modulate myocardial tolerance to ischemia-reperfusion injury. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of tetracycline (TTC) on myocardial infarct size in the isolated hearts obtained from obese rats with chemically-induced colitis (CIC). The association between TTC-induced changes in infarct size and intestinal microbiome composition as well as plasma levels of cytokines and short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) was also studied.

We provide an overview of the recent achievements in psychiatric genetics research in the Russian Federation and present genotype-phenotype, population, epigenetic, cytogenetic, functional, ENIGMA, and pharmacogenetic studies, with an emphasis on genome-wide association studies. The genetic backgrounds of mental illnesses in the polyethnic and multicultural population of the Russian Federation are still understudied. Furthermore, genetic, genomic, and pharmacogenetic data from the Russian Federation are not adequately represented in the international scientific literature, are currently not available for meta-analyses and have never been compared with data from other populations.

Background: Buspirone, a partial agonist of the 5-HT receptor (5-HT R), owing to potential antinociceptive properties may be useful in treatment of abdominal pain in IBS patients. The pain-related effects of buspirone are mediated via the 5-HT Rs, specifically located within the ventrolateral medulla (VLM). The most animal studies of the 5-HT R involvement in pain control have been carried out with somatic behavioral tests.

Background: Biomarkers are now widely used in many fields of medicine, and the identification of biomarkers that predict antipsychotic efficacy and adverse reactions is a growing area of psychiatric research. Monoamine molecules of the peripheral bloodstream are possible prospective biomarkers based on a growing body of evidence indicating that they may reflect specific changes in neurotransmitters in the brain. The aim of this study was to detect peripheral biogenic amine indicators of patients with acute psychosis and to test the correlations between the biological measures studied and the psychopathological status of the patients.

Histidine kinases are key components of regulatory systems that enable bacteria to respond to environmental changes. Two major classes of histidine kinases are recognized on the basis of their modular design: classical (HKI) and chemotaxis specific (HKII). Recently, a new type of histidine kinase that appeared to have features of both HKIs and HKIIs was identified and termed HKIII; however, the details of HKIII's relationship to other two classes of histidine kinases, their function, and evolutionary history remain unknown.

Electrical stimulation of the greater occipital nerve (GON) has recently shown promise as an effective non-pharmacological prophylactic therapy for drug-resistant chronic primary headaches, but the neurobiological mechanisms underlying its anticephalgic action are not elucidated. Considering that the spinal trigeminal nucleus (STN) is a key segmental structure playing a prominent role in pathophysiology of headaches, in the present study we evaluated the effects of GON electrical stimulation on ongoing and evoked firing of the dura-sensitive STN neurons. The experiments were carried out on urethane/chloralose-anesthetized, paralyzed and artificially ventilated male Wistar rats.

Patient safety is a leading challenge in healthcare and from the laboratory perspective it is now well established that preanalytical errors are the major contributor to the overall rate of diagnostic and therapeutic errors. To address this, the European Federation of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Medicine Working Group for Preanalytical Phase (EFLM WG-PRE) was established to lead in standardization and harmonization of preanalytical policies and practices at a European level. One of the key activities of the WG-PRE is the organization of the biennial EFLM-BD conference on the preanalytical phase to provide a forum for National Societies (NS) to discuss their issues.

Addition of rituximab (R) to fludarabine and cyclophosphamide (FC) has significantly improved patient outcomes in chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL). Whether baseline gene expression can identify patients who will benefit from immunochemotherapy over chemotherapy alone has not been determined. We assessed genome-wide expression of 300 pretreatment specimens from a subset of 552 patients in REACH, a study of FC or R-FC in relapsed CLL.

Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis (LASIK) is commonly used to correct refractive defects. The procedure frequently results in dry eye symptoms, usually of short but sometimes longer duration. This study was designed to assess dry eye and ocular tolerability after LASIK in patients treated with a preservative-free lacrimal substitute (Hylabak®) or preserved lacrimal substitute (Systane®).

Background: Organ shortage leads to usage of kidneys from donors after sudden cardiac death, or uncontrolled donors (UDCD). Ischemic injury due to cessation of circulation remains a crucial problem that limits adoption of UDCD. Our clinical investigation was to determine the applicability of kidneys obtained from UDCD and resuscitated by extracorporeal perfusion in situ after 60 minutes of asystole.

Background: Angiotensinogen (AGT) T174M gene polymorphism has been suggested to be linked to risk of coronary artery disease, however, results from studies of this association have been inconsistent. In this study, we assess the relationship between AGT T174M gene polymorphism and coronary artery disease.
Methods: We conducted a meta-analysis of 18 case-control studies with 8,147 coronary artery disease cases and 5,344 controls in Google scholar, PubMed, Cochrane Library and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases to identify eligible studies published by July, 2012.
