Introduction: Small mammals, especially rodents and bats, are known reservoirs of zoonotic viruses, but little is known about the viromes of insectivorous species including hedgehogs (order Eulipotyphla), which often live near human settlements and come into contact with humans.
Methods: We used high-throughput sequencing and metaviromic analysis to describe the viromes of 21 hedgehogs (Erinaceus sp.) sampled from summer 2022 to spring 2023.

Preventive vaccination is a crucial strategy for controlling and preventing infectious diseases, offering both effectiveness and cost-efficiency. However, despite the widespread success of vaccination programs, there are still certain population groups who struggle to mount adequate responses to immunization. These at-risk groups include but are not restricted to the elderly, overweight individuals, individuals with chronic infections and cancer patients.

The temperature-sensitive mutant exhibits the restoration of learning defects both after heat shock (HS) and under hypomagnetic conditions (HMC). Previously, was shown to have an increased level of LIM kinase 1 (LIMK1). However, its sequence did not significantly differ from that of the wild-type strain ().

A hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection can progress to chronic hepatitis, leading to liver fibrosis, cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma. CX3CL1/Fractalkine plays a crucial role in recruiting immune cells that are responsible for protecting against HBV infection. The aim of this study was to measure CX3CL1/Fractalkine concentrations in the blood plasma of individuals infected with HBV and to evaluate the role of this chemokine in the development of liver tissue fibrosis.

The chemokine receptor CXCR3 and its ligands (MIG/CXCL9, IP-10/CXCL10, and I-TAC/CXCL11) play a central role in the generation of cellular inflammation, both in the protective responses to invading pathogens, and in different pathological conditions associated with autoimmunity. It is worth noting that CXCR3 is highly expressed on innate and adaptive lymphocytes, as well as on various cell subsets that are localized in non-immune organs and tissues. Our review focuses exclusively on CXCR3-expressing T cells, including Th1, Th17.

Bats are natural hosts of a wide variety of viruses, including adenoviruses. European bats are known to carry mastadenoviruses categorized as species B (widespread in European Vespertilionidae bats) and whose taxonomy has not been clarified. We examined fecal samples from Vespertilionidae bats (five species) captured in central Russia and found that 2/12 (16%) were positive for mastadenoviruses.

Natural killer cells (NK cells) exert cytotoxicity towards target cells in several ways, including the expression of apoptosis-mediating ligands (TRAIL, FasL). In addition, NK cells themselves may be susceptible to apoptosis due to the expression of TRAIL receptors. These receptors include TRAIL-R1 (DR4), TRAIL-R2 (DR5), capable of inducing apoptosis, and TRAIL-R3 (DcR1), TRAIL-R4 (DcR2), the so-called "decoy receptors", which lack an intracellular domain initiating activation of caspases.

However, OPV became a source of neurovirulent vaccine-derived polioviruses (VDPVs). Currently, circulating type 2 VDPVs (cVDPV2) are the leading cause of poliomyelitis.

Cytokine storm is usually described as one of the main reasons behind COVID-associated mortality. Cytokines are essential protein molecules engaged in immune responses; they play a critical role in protection against infections. However, they also contribute to inflammatory reactions and tissue damage, becoming a double-edged sword in the context of COVID-19.

A large series of 2-arylchromen-4-ones containing from 1 to 3 fluorine atoms or a trifluoromethyl group in the structure was synthesized by condensation of fluorinated 2-hydroxyacetophenones with benzaldehydes in an alkaline medium and subsequent oxidative cyclization of the resulting 2'-hydroxychalcones by action of I in DMSO. The cytotoxicity of the obtained compounds was studied in glioblastoma cell line, SNB19, and in a monkey-derived normal kidney epithelium cell line, Vero. In addition, antiglycation activity of the obtained compounds was evaluated.

Based on the success of the Sabin2-based vaccine, a next-generation nOPV2 poliovirus vaccine has been developed. For epidemic monitoring and conducting epidemiological investigations, it is necessary to have a diagnostic assay with the ability to differentiate this variant from others. Here we describe such a real-time RT-PCR assay.

Phagocytosis is an essential innate immunity function in humans and animals. A decrease in the ability to phagocytize is associated with many diseases and aging of the immune system. Assessment of phagocytosis dynamics requires quantification of bacteria inside and outside the phagocyte.

Magnetogenetics emerges as a transformative approach for modulating cellular signaling pathways through the strategic application of magnetic fields and nanoparticles. This technique leverages the unique properties of magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) to induce mechanical or thermal stimuli within cells, facilitating the activation of mechano- and thermosensitive proteins without the need for traditional ligand-receptor interactions. Unlike traditional modalities that often require invasive interventions and lack precision in targeting specific cellular functions, magnetogenetics offers a non-invasive alternative with the capacity for deep tissue penetration and the potential for targeting a broad spectrum of cellular processes.

Introduction: The link between gut microbiota and host immunity motivated numerous studies of the gut microbiome in tuberculosis (TB) patients. However, these studies did not explore the metabolic capacity of the gut community, which is a key axis of impact on the host's immunity.
Methods: We used deep sequencing of fecal samples from 23 treatment-naive TB patients and 48 healthy donors to reconstruct the gut microbiome's metabolic capacity and strain/species-level content.

In recent years, antibacterial coatings have become an important approach in the global fight against bacterial pathogens. Developments in materials science, chemistry, and biochemistry have led to a plethora of materials and chemical compounds that have the potential to create antibacterial coatings. However, insufficient attention has been paid to the analysis of the techniques and technologies used to apply these coatings.

Background: Metagenomic studies in recent years have demonstrated that all tissues of the human body studied by genomic and transcriptomic sequencing methods, both in pathological processes and in normality, contain fragments of DNA and RNA from a variety of microorganisms. The composition of tissue microbiota and its relationship with development of pathological changes are still poorly understood, despite increasing number of studies in this area every year. In this study, gene expression of the lymph node microbiome in reactive follicular hyperplasia and follicular lymphoma was investigated.

The COVID-19 pandemic has become a serious challenge for humanity almost everywhere globally. Despite active vaccination around the world, the incidence proportion in different countries varies significantly as of May 2022. The reason may be a combination of demographic, immunological, and epidemiological factors.
