Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze maternal mortality rates and trends at Saint Paul's Hospital in Ethiopia, as there was no prior research on this topic at the institution.
  • The retrospective review from January 2016 to December 2017 revealed a maternal mortality ratio of 228.3 per 100,000 live births, with direct maternal deaths primarily caused by hypertensive disorders, postpartum hemorrhage, and sepsis.
  • The findings indicate that the maternal mortality rate at this hospital is lower than other institutions in Ethiopia, but highlights the growing concern of embolism as a leading cause of death, reflecting challenges similar to those faced in developed countries.

Though the prognosis of conjoined twins is generally low, there is limited evidence as to the optimal method of pregnancy termination, particularly in cases of advanced gestational age. We report a successful dilation and evacuation (D&E) done for conjoined twins at 22 weeks of gestation.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the clinical features and outcomes of 103 patients with acute neurological issues (like stroke and brain trauma) who required prolonged mechanical ventilation (PMV) at a hospital in Taiwan from 2011 to 2014.
  • Weaning success, defined as being off the ventilator for more than 5 days, occurred in 61% of patients, while 39% experienced weaning failure, which was linked to older age, lower Glasgow Coma Scale scores, and longer hospital stays.
  • The research concludes that a lower Glasgow Coma Scale score is a significant predictor of weaning failure and associated with higher in-hospital mortality in these patients.
