The impact of multiple listing (ML) strategies on lung transplantation is unknown. Retrospective review of United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) registry for lung transplantation between May 1, 2005 and March 31, 2017 was performed. Characteristics of single (SL) and ML candidates were compared, and incidence density matching was used to select up to 10 controls for each case.

Multiple studies and reports have suggested that coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) promotes arterial and venous thrombotic events in multiple organ systems, although the mechanism leading to a hypercoagulable state is still unknown. Few cases of splenic infarction associated with COVID-19 have been reported, of which half were found incidentally upon autopsy. This may be due to a clinically silent presentation or the symptoms being wrongfully attributed to pain caused by the effects of COVID-19.

Donor ethnicity is a prognosticator in organ transplant. However, the impact of donor/recipient race-matching is unclear. We hypothesized that there would be increased survival in donor-recipient race-matched organ recipients because of genetic and physiologic similarities.

Pioneering studies from the early 1980s suggested that bacterial peptidoglycan-derived muramyl peptides (MPs) could exert either stimulatory or immunosuppressive functions depending, in part, on chronicity of exposure. However, this Janus-faced property of MPs remains largely unexplored. Here, we demonstrate the immunosuppressive potential of Nod1, the bacterial sensor of diaminopimelic acid (DAP)-containing MPs.

Hospitals and ambulatory facilities significantly reduced cardiac care delivery in response to the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. The deferral of elective cardiovascular procedures led to a marked reduction in health care delivery with a significant impact on optimal cardiovascular care. International and Canadian data have reported dramatically increased wait times for diagnostic tests and cardiovascular procedures, as well as associated increased cardiovascular morbidity and mortality.

Purpose: Coronavirus disease-19 (COVID-19) has forced upon all academic institutions to conduct virtual interviewing (VI) instead of face-to-face interviewing (FTFI) this interviewing cycle. The purpose of this systematic review was to understand the process of VI, its effectiveness as an alternative to FTFI, and the experiences of applicants and institutions with VI. We also share best practice strategies for applicants and institutions in VI preparation.

Introduction: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is common, with a Canadian prevalence of 5%, and associated with significant morbidity. Understandably, CRS impairs workplace productivity but that productivity substantially increases following surgical treatment. CRS with nasal polyps (CRSwNP), the most common type of CRS, is usually treated with a combination of medications and endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS).

The objective of this review was to identify the most significant studies reporting on COVID-19 during pregnancy and to provide an overview of SARS-CoV-2 infection in pregnant women and perinatal outcomes. Eligibility criteria included all reports, reviews; case series with more than 100 individuals and that reported at least three of the following: maternal characteristics, maternal COVID-19 clinical presentation, pregnancy outcomes, maternal outcomes and/or neonatal/perinatal outcomes. We included eight studies that met the inclusion criteria, representing 10,966 cases distributed in 15 countries around the world until July 20, 2020.

Shear stress induces directed endothelial cell (EC) migration in blood vessels leading to vessel diameter increase and induction of vascular maturation. Other factors, such as EC elongation and interaction between ECs and non-vascular areas are also important. Computational models have previously been used to study collective cell migration.

Background: Neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) is the standard of care for patients with locally advanced breast cancer (LABC). The study was conducted to investigate the utility of quantitative ultrasound (QUS) carried out during NAC to predict the final tumour response in a multi-institutional setting.
Methods: Fifty-nine patients with LABC were enrolled from three institutions in North America (Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre (Toronto, Canada), MD Anderson Cancer Centre (Texas, USA), and Princess Margaret Cancer Centre (Toronto, Canada)).

Background: This study was conducted in order to develop a model for predicting response to neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) in patients with locally advanced breast cancer (LABC) using pretreatment quantitative ultrasound (QUS) radiomics.
Methods: This was a multicenter study involving four sites across North America, and appropriate approval was obtained from the individual ethics committees. Eighty-two patients with LABC were included for final analysis.

Eosinophilia is uncommon in early rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The most frequent causes of hypereosinophilia during RA treatment are atopic eczema, allergy, helminth infection, haematological malignancy and drug-associated complications. The pathogenesis of this abnormality associated with anti-cytokine therapy is still unknown.

Background: This study reports the long-term outcomes of a metaphyseal fit-and-fill cementless femoral component in total hip arthroplasty (THA) with a follow-up of 15-19 years.
Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of 376 consecutive THAs (345 patients), using a triple tapered stem performed between 2000 and 2003 with a view to assessing survivorship and radiological and functional outcomes. Images were assessed for initial alignment, terminal osteolysis, or subsidence, while clinical outcomes were assessed using the St Michael's Hip Score.

Objectives: Recent evidence from the fields of microbiology and immunology, as well as a small number of human sepsis studies, suggest that epigenetic regulation may play a central role in the pathogenesis of sepsis. The term "epigenetics" refers to regulatory mechanisms that control gene expression but are not related to changes in DNA sequence. These include DNA methylation, histone modifications, and regulation of transcription via non-coding RNAs.

We designed a multifaceted, theory-informed Opioid Self-Assessment (OSA) package, to increase adherence to the Canadian Opioid Guideline among family physicians. This study aimed to assess changes in Canadian family physicians' knowledge and practices after completing the OSA package.
