Unlabelled: The relationship between the classical cardiac biomarker and acute myocardial infarction (STEMI) in patients with COVID-19 is far from being elucidated. Furthermore, superoxide dismutase (SOD), a marker for oxidative stress, was associated with cardiac ischemia. Also, Galectin-3 is significant for defining the relationship between cardiac fibrosis and COVID-19.

Assessment of Metabolic Syndrome in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease: A 6-Month Follow-Up Study.

Diagnostics (Basel)

October 2024

Department of Medical Specialities I, Faculty of Medicine, "Grigore T. Popa" University of Medicine and Pharmacy, University Street No. 16, 700115 Iași, Romania.

Background/objectives: The association between chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a common one, with long-term therapeutic and prognostic impact. In view of the high pulmonary and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, self-management contributes to decreasing the risk of an acute cardiac event or pulmonary decompensation.

Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study on 100 patients admitted to Iasi Clinical Rehabilitation Hospital who were divided into two groups according to the presence (67 patients) or absence (33 patients) of MetS.

Article Synopsis
  • Neutrophils play a significant role in severe asthma and acute lung injury (ALI) through IL-17 stimulation, promoting an oxidative environment.
  • The study compared the effects of Secukinumab (SECU) with Dexamethasone (DEXA) in mice with asthma exacerbated by LPS, focusing on various immune response cytokines.
  • Results showed that both treatments altered cytokine levels, with SECU uniquely inhibiting IL-5 and decreasing Th17 responses, while DEXA had different effects on Th1 and Th2 cytokines.

: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children is a debilitating disease, difficult to treat. Dental appliances have been proposed as a valid therapy for improving functional outcomes with good compliance rates. Herein, we aimed to perform a meta-analysis comparing clinical outcomes between OSA children treated with dental appliances versus controls.

Omphalocele is the most common ventral abdominal wall defect. Omphalocele is associated with other significant anomalies in up to 80% of cases, among which the cardiac ones are the most frequent. The aim of our paper is to highlight, through a review of the literature, the importance and frequency of association between the two malformations and what impact this association has on the management and evolution of patients with these pathologies.

Intracardiac masses are unusual findings in infants, and most of them are benign. Nevertheless, they may be associated with a significant degree of hemodynamic instability and/or arrhythmias. Malignant tumors of the heart rarely occur in children.

Overweight and obesity in childhood are associated with early cardiovascular dysfunction and promote heightened risk of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in adulthood. Waist circumference (WC) correlates with visceral obesity, which is why obese children with elevated WC need to be carefully monitored to prevent long-term cardio-metabolic complications. The purpose of our study was to establish if WC could be a predictor of cardiovascular complications in children.
