Background And Objectives: Diagnosing ventriculostomy-related infection (VRI), a common complication after external ventricular drainage (EVD), is challenging and often associated with delayed initiation of antibiotic therapy. We aimed to develop a stewardship score to help in the decision of antibiotic therapy initiation when VRI is suspected.

Methods: This retrospective, single-center cohort study included patients admitted to the intensive care unit after EVD placement who were suspected of having healthcare-associated ventriculitis and/or meningitis between January 1, 2012, and August 31, 2022.

New Insights Into the Therapeutic Management of Varicella Zoster Virus Meningitis: A Series of 123 Polymerase Chain Reaction-Confirmed Cases.

Open Forum Infect Dis

July 2024

Department of Infectious Diseases, Saint Louis-Lariboisière Hospital, Assistance Publique-Hôpitaux de Paris, Université Paris Cité, Paris, France.

Background: Varicella zoster virus (VZV) can reactivate and cause meningitis, but few studies have distinguished it from meningoencephalitis regarding treatment recommendations. The objective of this study was to assess the outcomes of a large series of patients with VZV meningitis according to their therapeutic management.

Methods: We conducted a bicentric retrospective cohort study, in Paris, France, including all adult patients with a cerebrospinal fluid sample positive for VZV by polymerase chain reaction between April 2014 and June 2022.

Objectives: The relevance of syndromic multiplex-PCR for the etiological diagnosis of meningitis or meningoencephalitis is still a matter of debate. Here, we studied the impact of a 24/7 multiplex-PCR on the management of patients consulting in the emergency department for suspicion of community-acquired meningitis.

Methods: We conducted a single-center retrospective study at the Emergency department of Lariboisière University Hospital (Paris, France) including all patients suspected of meningitis.

Background And Purpose: The in vivo diagnosis of cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is currently based on the Boston criteria, which largely rely on hemorrhagic features on brain magnetic resonance imaging. Adding to these criteria F-fluoro-deoxy-D-glucose (FDG) positron emission tomography, a widely available imaging modality, might improve their accuracy. Here we tested the hypothesis that FDG uptake is reduced in posterior cortical areas, particularly the primary occipital cortex, which pathologically bear the brunt of vascular Aβ deposition.

Background: Cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA) is a frequent cause of both intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and cognitive impairment in the elderly. Diagnosis relies on the Boston criteria, which use magnetic resonance imaging markers including ≥2 exclusively lobar cerebral microbleeds (lCMBs). Although amyloid positron emission tomography (PET) may provide molecular diagnosis, its specificity relative to Alzheimer's disease (AD) is limited due to the prevalence of positive amyloid PET in cognitively normal elderly.

Background: The microbiological diagnosis of bone and joint infections (BJI) currently relies on cultures, and the relevance of molecular methods is still debated. The aim of this study was to determine whether polymerase chain reaction (PCR) could improve the etiological diagnosis of BJI.

Methods: A prospective study was conducted during a 4-year period at Lariboisiere University Hospital (Paris, France), including patients with suspicion of infectious spondylodiscitis, septic arthritis, prosthetic joint infections, and respective noninfected groups.

Bacteriology-Virology-Hygiene Department, Bacteriology Unit, Robert Debré University Hospital, avenue du général Koenig, 51092 Reims Cedex, France; Research Unit EA 4687 SFR Cap-Santé (FED 4231), Acquired Resistance in Enterobacteriaceae, Reims Champagne-Ardenne University, 51 rue Cognacq-Jay, 51095 Reims Cedex, France. Electronic address:

A new phenotypic method for detecting carbapenemases has been adapted (assembling of two MAST® kits, including one that contains faropenem to which a temocillin disk has been added) then assessed using 101 bacterial strains (Enterobacteriaceae with assays on Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii) including 62 which produce genetically identified carbapenemases. Concerning Carbapenemase-Producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE), there is 100% sensitivity for Klebsiella pneumoniae carbapenemase (KPC, Ambler class A) and OXA-48 (Ambler class D), and 91% for metallo-beta-lactamase (MBL, Ambler class B), with a 97% sensitivity for all carbapenemases, with a specificity of 100%. The test is also efficient for detecting Pseudomonas aeruginosa carbapenemases (sensitivity between 82 and 100% and 100% specificity).

We explored rates of Hepatitis B virus (HBV), Human Immunodeficiency Virus, Hepatitis C virus and Syphilis in a vulnerable population (mostly intravenous drug users, sex workers and homeless people) and focused on factors associated with failure to return for results (FTR) and with having a false perception (FP) of Immunization against HBV. We performed a prospective multicenter observational study in nine mobile (Out-of-Hospital) areas of screening located in Paris from 1 January 2014 through 31 December 2014. A total of 341 patients were recruited.

Eosinophilic fasciitis (Shulman disease).

Best Pract Res Clin Rheumatol

August 2012

Paris Diderot (Paris VII) University, Department of Internal Medicine, Saint-Louis Lariboisière Fernand Widal Hospital Group, Paris, France.

Article Synopsis
  • Eosinophilic fasciitis (EF) is a rare connective tissue disease marked by painful swelling and thickening of the skin and soft tissues, often diagnosed through specific skin abnormalities and an inflammatory cellular composition.
  • Diagnosis can be supported by MRI imaging, which shows changes in the fascia, and ruling out similar conditions is crucial, such as eosinophilia-myalgia syndrome and systemic sclerosis.
  • There is no standard treatment for EF due to its rarity, but oral corticosteroids are the primary therapy, sometimes combined with immunosuppressive drugs like methotrexate if needed.
