Background/aim: With new therapies for metastatic prostate cancer, patients are living longer, increasing the need for better understanding of the impact of comorbid disease. Prescription medications may risk-stratify patients independent of established methods, such as the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) and guide treatment selection.
Patients And Methods: In a nationwide retrospective study of US Veterans, we used multivariable logistic regression and Cox proportional hazard modeling to evaluate the association between number and class of prescription medications and overall survival (OS) with age, race, body-mass index, prostate specific antigen (PSA), and Charlson comorbidities as covariates in veterans treated for de novo metastatic hormone sensitive prostate cancer (mHSPC) between 2010-2021.

Background: According to the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guidelines, 18F-fluciclovine PET/CT is considered appropriate after negative standard of care (SOC) imaging.
Objective: To prospectively compare 18F-fluciclovine to SOC imaging, investigate whether it should be done when SOC imaging is (+), and evaluate its detection rate in patients receiving androgen deprivation therapy.
Methods: We recruited 57 prostate cancer patients with biochemical recurrence with 18F-fluciclovine PET/CT and SOC imaging within 30 days.

Background: Children and young adults have a vast array of electronics at their fingertips. While it can provide endless hours of entertainment and education, we are also seeing a structural consequence. Children are using these devices with their head tilted down with poor posture resulting in increased stress on the skull from attached structures which can lead to a bone spur (exostosis) at the external occipital protuberance (EOP).

Introduction: Chymase is a highly destructive serine protease rapidly neutralized in the circulation by protease inhibitors. Here we test whether pericardial fluid (PCF) chymase activation and other inflammatory biomarkers determine intensive care unit length of stay, and explore mechanisms of chymase delivery by extracellular vesicles to the heart.
Methods: PCF was collected from adult patients (17 on-pump; 13 off-pump) 4 h after cardiac surgery.

Substantial evidence suggests a role for immunotherapy in treating Alzheimer's disease (AD). Several monoclonal antibodies targeting aggregated forms of beta amyloid (Aβ), have been shown to reduce amyloid plaques and in some cases, mitigate cognitive decline in early-stage AD patients. We sought to determine if genetically engineered macrophages could improve the targeting and degradation of amyloid plaques.

Erythropoisis stimulating agent (ESA) use was addressed in Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Oncology Drug Advisory Committee (ODAC) meetings between 2004 and 2008. FDA safety-focused regulatory actions occurred in 2007 and 2008. In 2007, black box warnings advised of early death and venous thromboembolism (VTE) risks with ESAs in oncology.

This study aims to detect the potential impact of chemotherapy on the coronary calcium scoring (CCS) in lymphoma patients undergoing FDG-PET/CT at baseline and for therapy response using the CT portion of the exam to calculate the CCS. One hundred twelve lymphoma patients were included in the study based on having both baseline and at least 2 post-chemotherapy scans. The unenhanced CT portions of the scans were reviewed to measure the CCS which was then extracted using the Toshiba Vital Program.

Background: A safe, effective, and rapidly scalable vaccine against Zika virus infection is needed. We developed a purified formalin-inactivated Zika virus vaccine (ZPIV) candidate that showed protection in mice and non-human primates against viraemia after Zika virus challenge. Here we present the preliminary results in human beings.

Background: Remote inhaler monitoring is an emerging technology that enables the healthcare team to monitor the time and location of a patient's inhaler use. We assessed the feasibility of remote inhaler monitoring for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients and the pattern of albuterol inhaler use associated with COPD exacerbations.
Methods: Thirty-five participants with COPD used an electronic inhaler sensor for 12 weeks which recorded the date and time of each albuterol actuation.

The c-Jun N-terminal kinase 2 (JNK2) signaling pathway contributes to inflammation and plays a key role in the development of obesity-induced insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease. Macrophages are key cells implicated in these metabolic abnormalities. Active vitamin D downregulates macrophage JNK activation, suppressing oxidized LDL cholesterol uptake and foam cell formation and promoting an anti-inflammatory phenotype.

Cross-sectional studies indicate consistent associations between low 25(OH)D concentration and increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), but results of randomized control trials (RCTs) are mixed. However, the majority of the RCTs do not focus on type 2 diabetics, potentially obscuring the effects of vitamin D in this population. In vitro 1,25(OH)D downregulates macrophage cholesterol deposition, but the in vivo effects are unknown.

Background: Overuse of short-acting beta-agonists (SABA) is described in asthma, but little is known about overuse of SABA in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Methods: Prospective 3-month cohort study of patients with moderate-to-severe COPD who were provided a portable electronic inhaler sensor to monitor daily SABA use. Subjects wore a pedometer for 3 seven-day periods and were asked to complete a daily diary of symptoms and inhaler use.

There is a physiological decline in food intake with aging. The reasons for the decline in food intake are multifactorial and involve both peripheral and central mechanisms. Altered hedonic qualities of food occur due to alterations in taste and, more particularly, smell with aging.

Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence, patterns of reporting, and perceived effectiveness of alternative medical therapies (ATs) among older white American, African American, and Japanese outpatients.
Methods: This study used a questionnaire to interview participants (N = 593; age, >59 y), who were outpatients of geriatric outpatient clinics in Saint Louis, Missouri, and Tokyo, Japan (white Americans, n = 180; African Americans, n = 106; and Japanese, n = 307).
Results: Use of >1 AT was greatest among older Japanese (74.
