The diagnosis of septic arthritis requires a reliance on ancillary tests, including synovial fluid white blood cell count (jWBC), percentage of polymorphonuclear leukocytes (%PMN), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), and C-reactive protein (CRP). Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is a syndrome that characteristically presents with progressive gait impairment, cognitive deficits, and urinary urgency or incontinence. We present a case of a 54-year-old male with a past medical history of alcohol use and no primary care provider with new-onset auditory hallucinations. The patient was found to have a marked enlargement of the supratentorial and infratentorial ventricles on both computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and an opening pressure of 21 on the lumbar puncture, concerning for NPH.

Introduction: Reported prevalence rates of the fabella sesamoid bone vary widely, particularly between studies based on either X-ray imaging or anatomical dissection approaches. The purpose of this study was to directly compare these two methodologies in their detection of fabellae and investigate whether variability in the density of fabellae could explain any discrepancies.

Single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) intermediates which emerge during DNA metabolic processes are shielded by replication protein A (RPA). RPA binds to ssDNA and acts as a gatekeeper to direct the ssDNA towards downstream DNA metabolic pathways with exceptional specificity. Understanding the mechanistic basis for such RPA-dependent functional specificity requires knowledge of the structural conformation of ssDNA when RPA-bound.

Background: Minimally invasive surgical interventions for metastatic invasion of the pelvis have become more prevalent and varied. The hemostatic response to vascular injury entails a sequence of proteolytic events where several inactive zymogens of the trypsin family are converted to active proteases. The cascade starts with exposure of tissue factor from the damaged endothelium and culminates with conversion of prothrombin to thrombin in a reaction catalyzed by the prothrombinase complex composed of the enzyme factor Xa, cofactor Va, Ca, and phospholipids. This cofactor-dependent activation is paradigmatic of analogous reactions of the blood coagulation and complement cascades, which makes elucidation of its molecular mechanism of broad significance to the large class of trypsin-like zymogens to which prothrombin belongs.

BRCA1/2 proteins function in genome stability by promoting repair of double-stranded DNA breaks through homologous recombination and by protecting stalled replication forks from nucleolytic degradation. In BRCA1/2-deficient cancer cells, extensively degraded replication forks can be rescued through distinct fork recovery mechanisms that also promote cell survival. Here, we identified a novel pathway mediated by the E3 ubiquitin ligase RAD18, the E2-conjugating enzyme UBC13, the recombination factor PALB2, the E3 ubiquitin ligase RNF168 and PCNA ubiquitination that promotes fork recovery in BRCA1- but not BRCA2-deficient cells.
