Background: Fragile X syndrome, with an approximate incidence rate of 1 in 4000 males to 1 in 8000 females, is the most prevalent genetic cause of heritable intellectual disability and the most common monogenic cause of autism spectrum disorder. The full mutation of the Fragile X Messenger Ribonucleoprotein-1 gene, characterized by an expansion of CGG trinucleotide repeats (>200 CGG repeats), leads to fragile X syndrome. Currently, there are no targeted treatments available for fragile X syndrome.

Objective: As pediatric mortality improves, approaches to pediatric critical care now focus on understanding long-term implications of survivorship on patients and families. We aimed to characterize how patients recall time spent sedated and recovering to identify areas for improvement in patient outcomes.
Methods: We undertook qualitative analysis using semistructured interviews of pediatric patients requiring extra-corporeal support in our intensive care units from 2018 to 2023.

Objective: This study aimed to implement a point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) program into a large neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) to enhance care by improving (1) umbilical venous catheter (UVC) tip identification and (2) central placement.
Study Design: A POCUS program was established with core providers who received training from external and internal experts. A prospective study ( = 94) compared the accuracy of UVC identification between neonatology-performed ultrasound (NeoUS) and X-ray relative to a referent of radiology-interpreted ultrasound.
Purpose: To investigate the abortion views and reproductive concerns of current in vitro fertilization patients after the US Supreme Court Dobbs v. Jackson decision, which overturned the Roe v. Wade decision guaranteeing abortion access.

Background And Objective: As life expectancy in cystic fibrosis (CF) has increased over the years, a shift in focus toward extra-pulmonary comorbidities such as gastrointestinal (GI) disease has become a topic of particular importance. Although not well-defined in the current literature, GI dysmotility is thought to significantly contribute to GI symptomatology in the CF population. The objective of this article was to provide a comprehensive review of diagnostic modalities at the disposal of the clinician in the evaluation of patients with CF (pwCF) presenting with GI complaints.

Aims: In the United States, evidence suggests that during the COVID-19 pandemic, admissions of patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) have increased. This study assessed hospital admission rates for pediatric type 1 (T1DM) and type 2 (T2DM) diabetes mellitus during 2019-2021, and the potential influence of the timing of various pandemic response measures.
Methods: Retrospective chart reviews were conducted of 854 T1DM and 135 T2DM hospital admissions between January 2019 and December 2021 in patients < 20 years old to collect demographic data, admission type, body mass index (BMI), and area deprivation index (ADI, a measure of socioeconomic vulnerability).

The use of bivalirudin as the primary anticoagulant for children supported on extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is growing. Ideal management of bivalirudin dosing during therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) on ECMO is unknown. We performed a single-center retrospective study of ECMO patients anticoagulated with bivalirudin who underwent TPE from January 2019 to December 2021.

Background: Opioid administration to patients with obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) is controversial because they are believed to be more sensitive to opioids. However, objective data on opioid effects in OSA are lacking. We tested the hypothesis that subjects with untreated OSA have increased sensitivity to opioids compared with subjects without OSA, or with OSA treated with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or bilevel positive airway pressure (BIPAP).

Objective: We sought to evaluate the fidelity with which the patient's clinical state is represented by the electronic health record (EHR) flow sheet vital signs data compared to a commercially available automated data aggregation platform in a pediatric cardiac intensive care unit (CICU).
Methods: This is a retrospective observational study of heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), respiratory rate (RR), and pulse oximetry (SpO2) data archived in a conventional EHR and an automated data platform for 857 pediatric patients admitted postoperatively to a tertiary pediatric CICU. Automated data captured for 72 h after admission were analyzed for significant HR, SBP, RR, and SpO2 deviations from baseline (events).
