Background: Ethical competencies dealing with decision-making for clinicians involved in artificially administered nutrition and hydration (AANH) have not been defined in the literature. Although clinical assessments identify nutrition needs and appropriate routes of nutrition administration, an assessment of the ethical, cultural, and spiritual implications of the medical nutrition therapy may be overlooked.

Methods: Eleven competency statements were developed by members of two international sections of the American Society for Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition.

Health personnel may seek chaplain support to discuss stressors related to complex patient cases, difficult team dynamics, and personal issues. In this survey study of 1376 healthcare interprofessional clinicians, participants reported interacting with chaplains most frequently over patient-related stressors in the prior 12 months. Factors associated with chaplain interactions to discuss all three stressors included: reporting chaplains provide spiritual support to health personnel, more years of service, seeking professional help to deal with stressors, and higher levels of secondary traumatic stress.

Background: The central pedicle technique (CPT) is rarely used to perform mastopexy or mastopexy with implant augmentation despite having robust perfusion and allowing for great exposure, resulting in reproducible results. This study was conducted to review one surgeon's experience using the CPT for both mastopexy and mastopexy with implant augmentation.

Method: A retrospective review of consecutive patients who had a mastopexy or mastopexy with augmentation using a standardized CPT from 2017 through 2021 was performed.

Emergency medicine training is associated with high levels of stress and burnout, which were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic further exposed a mismatch between trainees' mental health needs and timely support services; therefore, the objective of our innovation was to create an opportunity for residents to access a social worker who could provide consistent coaching. The residency leadership team partnered with our graduate medical education (GME) office to identify a clinical social worker and professionally-trained coach to lead sessions.

Background: Despite supportive evidence and guidelines, the use of multiple arterial grafts (MAGs) in coronary artery bypass grafting remains low. We sought to determine surgeon perception of personal MAG use and compare this with actual MAG use.

Methods: We conducted a statewide surgeon survey of MAG use, presence of a hospital MAG protocol, and barriers for MAG use, with a response rate of 78% (n = 25).

The historical institution, evolution, and innovations of nutrition support teams (NSTs) over the past six decades are presented. Focused aspects of the transition to transdisciplinary and patient-centered care, NST membership, leadership, and the future of NSTs are further discussed. NSTs were instituted to address the need for the safe implementation and management of parenteral nutrition, developed in the late 1960s, which requires the expertise of individuals working collaboratively in a multidisciplinary fashion.

Rectal Tonsil in a Patient With Positive Syphilis Serology.

Cureus

April 2022

Hematopathology, Pathology and Cytology Labs Inc., Lexington, USA.

Rectal tonsils are an abnormal reactive proliferation of lymphoid tissue in the rectum. Typical lymphoid tissue of the colon and rectum can proliferate with an increased number of germinal centers in response to exposure to an antigen in the GI tract. This response, in rare cases, escalates to the proliferation of a lymphoid mass known as a rectal tonsil.

Physician Leadership in the Employed Universe.

Hosp Top

November 2022

Department of Management, Depaul University, Chicago, Illinois, USA.

Physicians are increasingly becoming employed by hospitals and health systems. Aims: While the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic may be contained through vaccination, transfusion of convalescent plasma (CCP) from individuals who recovered from COVID-19 (CCP) is considered an alternative treatment. We investigate if CCP transfusion in patients with severe respiratory failure increases plasma titres of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies and improves clinical outcomes.

Methods: Patients with COVID-19 (n=34) were consented for CCP transfusion and serial blood draws pretransfusion and post-transfusion.
