Purpose: Unlike most childhood cancers, therapy for ALL includes a prolonged maintenance phase during which children typically resume regular activities. Physicians need data regarding the persistent impact of COVID-19 in this population to help guide families after the pandemic.
Methods: The Pediatric Oncology COVID-19 Case Report (POCC) collects deidentified data (sociodemographics, clinical data [cancer, COVID-19 course]) on children, adolescents, and young adults with cancer and COVID-19 from 104 US pediatric oncology institutions.
Introduction Takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) is a poorly understood condition typically characterized by abnormal left ventricular wall motion without causative coronary artery disease and typically presents in post-menopausal women after the experience of a physical or emotional stressor. The pathophysiology of TCM is complex and multifactorial, resulting in complications with varied severity; one of the most concerning complications is thromboembolism, specifically, pulmonary embolism (PE), which is understudied in its relation to TCM. The purpose of this study was to characterize and evaluate the real-world prevalence and outcomes of PE in TCM.

Background: Common bile duct dilatation alone or double duct sign (both CBD and dilated pancreatic duct dilatation) and abnormal liver enzymes are highly predictive of biliary disease. This can be identified on ultrasound (US), CT scan, and/or magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP). Unexplained dilatation on imaging might warrant endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) to identify any occult causes.

Metronidazole is a common antibiotic agent for hepatic abscesses, which require both gram-negative and anaerobic coverage. Rarely, this antibiotic has been found to induce encephalopathy. Here, we describe a 65-year-old male who was treated with metronidazole for his hepatic abscess, who presented with syncope and questionable seizure and was found to have magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) brain findings consistent with metronidazole toxicity.

The opioid crisis in the United States remains a major issue that is directly linked to the prescribing practices of physicians. There is a lack of consistency in post-operative prescribing of narcotic medications. We have designed a retrospective study to evaluate factors that contribute to the prescription of opioids following common laparoscopic procedures.

Acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) is a unique subtype of acute myeloid leukemia (AML), which presents with a distinct coagulopathy. Paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria (PNH) is an acquired hemolytic anemia which is clonal in nature due to somatic mutation. PNH may evolve to aplastic anemia, and more rarely, to a myelodysplastic syndrome or to AML.

Purpose Of Review: This study aims to describe what is currently known about how children with cancer have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, including morbidity and mortality, interruptions in cancer care and delays in diagnosis, and psychosocial effects. Here we summarize the literature on how this patient population has fared during the pandemic, reviewing multiple smaller reports along with two large registries.
Recent Findings: Although children with cancer generally have better outcomes with COVID-19 infection than adults with cancer, their risks of hospitalization, ICU admission, and death are greatly increased compared to the general pediatric population.

The insertion of central venous catheters through the femoral veins is not uncommon and is potentially associated with the risk of immediate puncture-related complications and severe late complications as infection and thrombosis. As for other central venous access devices, the use of a standardized protocol of insertion and the correct application of evidence-based strategies are beneficial in reducing the risk of complications. We proposed a standardized protocol (S.

Thrombosis of the portal vein (PVT) is generally seen in the setting of liver cirrhosis and to a lesser extent in the absence of cirrhosis. There is no clear guidance in relation to approaching treatment with anticoagulation in this condition. The professional societies and guidelines recommend treatment with traditional anticoagulation like low-molecular-weight heparin and vitamin-K antagonists in patients presenting with acute portal vein thrombosis.

Even though classical Hodgkin lymphoma is highly curable, the outcome of patients with a refractory or relapsed disease has been disappointing. Multiple lines of therapy are available for patients after their first failure, and most respond to subsequent therapies. However, there is a sizable proportion that remains relapsing/recurrent even after several lines of therapy.

Abnormally low pO2 and oxygen saturations on arterial blood gases (ABGs) test have been reported in the patients who have very high WBC and platelet counts; generally in the setting of hematological malignancies. This is presumably related to the consumption of oxygen by the active cellular elements in the arterial blood sample during the process of ABG analysis. This phenomenon which is also known as "spurious hypoxemia" or "oxygen steal" or "leukocyte/platelet larceny" is suspected when there is no other obvious explanation for hypoxemia on ABG, especially in the setting of normal oxygen saturations by the pulse oximetry.

Furthermore, different strategies adopted during insertion may reduce or increase the incidence of late catheter-related complications (infection, venous thrombosis, dislodgment). This paper describes a standardized protocol (S.
