Tracheal, bronchus, and lung cancer mortality and air pollution exposure in Tuscany, Italy: Bayesian Health Impact Assessment and Global Sensitivity Analysis on a sub-regional scale.

Outdoor air pollution is a significant risk factor for tracheal, bronchus, and lung (TBL) cancer. This study employs a Bayesian approach to evaluate TBL cancer mortality due to air pollution in Tuscany, Central Italy, in 2023. Using locally validated data, we assessed the impact of fine particulate matter (PM and PM) and nitrogen dioxide (NO) in terms of attributable deaths and years of life lost (YLL).

Dementia among migrants in Italy: a qualitative study of the ImmiDem project.

Introduction: In recent years, the number of migrants referred to centres for cognitive disorders and dementias has increased. A Phenomenological Approach to Medication Adherence in Elderly Patients: A Qualitative Study.

The present phenomenological qualitative study aims to explore the elderly experience in managing their medication therapy and their perception of medication adherence. Based on Husserl's perspective, a qualitative descriptive study was conducted utilizing the phenomenological approach, specifically Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA).

Sleep Quality and Medication Adherence in Older Adults: A Systematic Review.

Sleep quality significantly impacts individuals' overall health, especially in older adults. Older adults often face comorbid conditions, polypharmacy (the intake of five or more medications per day), and medication non-adherence, which are common among those with sleep disorders. The purpose of this systematic review is to examine the relationship between sleep quality and medication adherence in older adults and to describe the measuring instruments used.

A long and winding road: My personal journey to oxytocin with no return.

The present paper is the personal narration of the author reviewing her scientific pathways that led her toward the study of oxytocin. My work began with a pioneering study showing a decreased number of the serotonin transporter proteins in romantic lovers. This unexpected finding promoted my interest in the neurobiology of human emotions and feelings, and significantly shifted my research focus from diseases to physiological states that underlie "love.

PGT-M, a Useful Tool to Manage the Lynch Syndrome Transmission.

Lynch syndrome is one of the most common hereditary cancer sensitivity syndromes and is caused by autosomal-dominant germline mutations in DNA mismatch repair genes. In patients affected by this syndrome, pre-implantation genetic testing for monogenic disorders (PGT-M) could be the elective technique used to prevent the transmission of this hereditary syndrome to offspring. Notably, despite the severity of the condition, some authors have observed a markedly lower demand for PGT-M in these patients compared to those with other hereditary conditions.

Method: A cross-sectional study including 405 patients with heart failure. Self-care behaviors were assessed by the Self-Care of Heart Failure Index.

Relationship between BDNF and oxytocin.

Converging, albeit scattered data mainly gathered in animals indicate that the neurotrophin brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and the nonapeptide oxytocin (OT) interact in a cooperative way. Data in humans are really limited and indirect. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to explore the possible existence of a link between OT and BDNF in humans, by means of two peripheral markers, the platelet-poor-plasmatic-BDNF (PPP-BDNF) and the platelet BDNF (PLT-BDNF) and OT levels.

The main purpose of reconstructive surgery (RS) is to restore the integrity of soft tissues damaged by trauma, surgery, congenital deformity, burns, or infection. The Mild Behavioral Impairment (MBI) concept was developed to determine whether late-onset persistent neuropsychiatric symptoms (NPSs) may be early manifestations of cognitive decline. Our study aims to investigate the prevalence and differentiating features of MBI with respect to major neurocognitive disorders (MNDs) and primary psychiatric disorders (PPDs). A total of 144 elderly patients who were referred to our psychogeriatric outpatient service were recruited.

Depression and Pseudodementia: Decoding the Intricate Bonds in an Italian Outpatient Setting.

In spite of the uncertainties of its diagnostic framework, pseudodementia may be conceptualized as a condition characterized by depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment in the absence of dementia. Given the controversies on this topic, the aim of the present study was to assess neurological and cognitive dysfunctions in a sample of elderly depressed subjects, and the eventual relationship between cognitive impairment and depressive symptoms. Fifty-seven elderly depressed outpatients of both sexes were included in the study.

Bladder Epicheck Test: A Novel Tool to Support Urothelial Carcinoma Diagnosis in Urine Samples.

Bladder cancer and upper urothelial tract carcinoma are common diseases with a high risk of recurrence, thus necessitating follow-up after initial treatment. The management of non-muscle invasive bladder carcinoma (NMIBC) after transurethral resection involves surveillance, intravesical therapy, and cytology with cystoscopy. Urinary cytology, cystoscopy, and radiological evaluation of the upper urinary tract are recommended during follow-up in the international urological guidelines.

Variation of Circulating Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) in Depression: Relationships with Inflammatory Indices, Metabolic Status and Patients' Clinical Features.

This study seeks to offer a contribution to the method of subtyping major depressed patients by exploring the possible relationships between circulating brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), different peripheral inflammatory/metabolic markers in the blood and clinical characteristics. Thirty-nine patients, thoroughly diagnosed according to the DSM-5 criteria, underwent a comprehensive set of evaluations encompassing structured interviews, rating scales and a panel of blood tests. Correlation and comparison analyses were carried out by means of non-parametric statistical tests.

Inhibition of LPS-Induced Inflammatory Response of Oral Mesenchymal Stem Cells in the Presence of Galectin-3.

Galectin-3 (GAL-3) is a beta-galactoside binding lectin produced by mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) and other cell sources under inflammatory conditions. Several studies have reported that GAL-3 exerts an anti-inflammatory action, regulated by its natural ligand GAL-3 BP. In the present study, we aimed to assess the GAL-3 mediated regulation of the MSC function in an LPS-induced inflammation setting.

Health needs and perception of health care quality among Asylum Seekers and Refugees in an Italian local health authority: A qualitative study.

Background: Migrants, Asylum Seekers and Refugees (ASRs) represent a vulnerable diversified population with increased risks of developing health problems, and in the hosting countries several barriers often hamper their access to the health services. Gathering information about ASRs' experiences and perceptions of host country health care systems may contribute to improve the quality of health care provided. The aim of this study was to explore the health needs in their bio-psycho-social meaning, and the quality of health care as perceived from the ASRs' perspective.
